Attn: South Florida fans - To those who are South Florida fans or who are used to attending early season tournaments at South Florida - All spring softball games and early season tournaments for South Florida will be played in Clearwater at Eddie C. Moore Complex. That adds 45 minute to my commute.
PS - The reason is that the university is beginning its renovation for a sports complex, including a softball stadium, and the current softball field will be cleared to make a football practice field.

Joisey-  Playing all their games at Eddie C. Moore (very nice complex) has not made any of the Bulls fans very happy.  Family and students are not happy.  This will add approx an extra hour or two for the student/athlete just in commute time before and after games.  Also, the "walk-up" fans (other students on campus) will be non-existent.  I know there is not much choice but I feel for the team and their fans!

The "walk up" fan scenario is very common for many universities.  Santa Clara, for example, plays at a community college on the other side of Silicon Valley. (If you've ever driven in the valley you know that's no picnic). Portland State plays in a public park in a neighborhood miles from campus where I wouldn't walk around, much less walk up.  There are ton of softball games being played in this country far from campus in facilities that are worse than the rec ball leagues play in.

Many of these schools have baseball stadiums that rival minor league stadiums (Santa Clara is an example) but there's no thought of building an on-campus softball field.  So, while it may be inconvenient for Frank and the other USF fans to put up with an extra commute along a beautiful highway in the bay near the Gulf of Mexico for a year, they will end up with a nice new facility right on campus when all is said and done.  A lot of schools would trade places in an instant.

poke - I, for one, am not happy this season because it adds an extra 45 to 50 minutes to my trip to see games. Visiting teams landing at Tampa International, however, will be just across the Courtney Campbell Causeway from Eddie C. Moore (15-20 minutes) and several nice hotels along Rt. 60. They won't have to travel through Tampa to get to the current field. The Softball stadium is supposed to be ready for play for the 2011 season, and that will be very close to the current playing field on campus. Reminds me of the signs that say, "Dig we must for a better New York"

"Along a beautiful highway. . .". You must have never driven along Rt. 275 through Tampa during rush hour. It's a 45 minute parking lot. Also, it is ALWAYS under construction. However, I do agree with the rest of your assessment. That Softball Stadium is a great carrot at the end of this temporary journey.
PS - I remember when I would drive to Chattanooga or Columbus, Georgia or Tuscaloosa or Gainesville to see some games, but now I much prefer that they play in my back yard. We old folks do change our perspective of sacrifice as the years go by when it comes to driving..

Frank,

You're right I haven't driven along Rt. 275 in rush hour.  But I DID spend four years commuting 40 miles each way on two of the three busiest freeways in the world while passing over the third busiest freeway.   If you've ever driven the San Diego Freeway on the west side you know that you can run into bumper to bumper traffic at 11pm.  You've got nothing on me with regard to traffic complaints.  But, you know what?  I never complained.  It was always a pleasure!

Joisey:  I am fortunate to watch 25-30 games a year at USF.  This year I would predict that I will only attend the weekend tourney's at Eddie C. Moore and none of the mid week games...to much traffic and too far a commute.  I really love how they wait until the softball season is ready to start before they break ground (Dec?!?).  Anyway, to no surprise I hear they are working around what football wants...not baseball and softball.

LMU...I have many former players that have played at almost every conference in the country and some of the best atmospheres are the ones that have the "student body" well represented...not just mom and dad.  USF will be hard pressed to get that crowd this year because of when it was decided to start working on the field.  USF's "old" softball field is slated to be turned into the "new" practice site for the football team and they wanted to get started on that project...now...not after the softball season!  Anyway, Ken and his girls will survive and they will have that new facility next year.  Watch and see how this helps with recruiting.  An Olympic Coach, a new facility, and the warmth of the Florida weather along with a great school makes this a nice choice for top recruits.  No longer will Ken lose recruits because of the facilities!  JMHO

Charlie - I have heard that there are driver masochists out there. I admit to not being one of them, especially at night as I grow older.
