The 16 teams are split into 2 Round Robin groups (or sections, or pools)

USA is grouped with Chinese Taipei, Italy, Great Britain, Australia, Netherlands, Botswana and Dominican Republic.
After those 7 games the top 4 teams in each Group compete in double page format tourney.

Basically #3 of group A plays #4 of group B--loser eliminated. #3 of Group B plays #4 of Group A---loser eliminated. This is Game 1 and Game 2.
#1 of A plays #2 of B--- Loser moves on to play winner of a 3/4 matchup. #1 of B plays #2 of A---Loser moves on to play winner of 3/4 matchup. This is Game 3 and Game 4.
Winner of Game 1 plays loser of Game 3. Winner of Game 2 plays loser of Game 4. Both winners advance to play each other in game 8. This is Game 5 and Game 6.

Winners of Games 1 and 2 play each other. Winner moves on to championship game. Loser plays winner of Game 8. This is Game 7.
Winners of Games 5 and 6 play each other. Winner moves on to play loser of game 7. This is Game 8.
Loser of Game 7 plays winner of game 8. Winner moves on to championship Game. This is Game 9.
Undefeated winner of game 7 plays the 1-loss winner of game 9 in a 1-game winner-take-all championship game. Sucks when championship game is your only loss of tourney.

56 round robin games. 10 games in double page format tourney. it will be an awesome tourney. Look for Netherlands to play great at home and Australia to play extremely well in that part of the world. Let's see how American and Canadian players do not playing in north America. Russia softball will be interesting. Czech republic got pwned in international play and will do better this year.
Republic of Botswana is north of south africa and south of angola (SW of Zimbabwe if I remember correctly). This is their 4th trip--they have speed and strength but the pitching bowl is empty and puts it on a T for hitters.
Dominican, Puerto rico and cuba should be improved--their women basketball, volleyball, and soccer are competitive. Great Britain is not so great and can't point to soccer since they got knocked out in group play in world cup. Russia hopes for a softball version of miracle on ice for them to win (or even make it to page format tourney). I will be tuned in and some people here said they were going 2 years ago when world championship packjages went on sale (tickets, travel, hotel, tours, etc all in one). I am excited for it.

Is there a TV schedule for the Canadian Cup and/or the Worlds in the Netherlands?  If so, please post it if you know it.  .

Sam Fischer is having a pretty good tournament.  She's come on strong when it counts.

Team USA is 6-0 in the World Tournament in Amsterdam, and leading Italy 6-0 after three innings today.  Looks like Japan, Canada, and USA must be regarded as the favorites for gold.  Ueno, as is usual, is outstanding for Japan.

Charlie - What great travel benefits these young ladies get in return for their dedication and hard work representing the USA.  !!!!  As the Pennsylvania Deutsch say, "It pleasures me".

USA run rules Italy 7-0 as Traina and Nevins (the two pitchers from Florida) combine for a no hitter.   USA finishes pool play at 7-0 and looks forward to Canada, Japan, etc. in the next round of contests.

USA loses to Japan in the semifinals 6-1.  Play tomorrow against the winner of Canada vs. Australia.  Loser of that game gets bronze.  Winner goes on to play Japan for the championship.

LMU Fan - Ueno ?  I can get a headline on USASoftball that says "Sara Nevins' effort not enough as USA loses 6-1 to Japan".  I can't get any details.  I think that Japan with Ueno is the best team in the tournament.  Japanese professional league players with lots of international experience and the #1 pitcher in the international softball world.

Gold Medal game between Japan & USA being broadcast live on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app.

After 1 inning
Japan 3
USA 0

Nevins started for the USA.

Is this the last year of Eriksen as the USA head coach?  Hopefully.

Nevins didn't start.  She came in after USA trailed 3-0 in the first.  Moore started and had 3 walks in the first.  I think USA outhit Japan.  Just couldn't get a hit when it mattered.  Wonder what the outcome would have been had Nevins started the game.

I think there's something to be said about pitchers just coming out of college (Nevins) against pitchers who haven't had that level of competition in a year or more (Moore). Nevins has been the best pitcher this summer by far. On the same token, Traina took her team to the WCWS championship and has been the #4 pitcher so maybe it has nothing to do with level of competition faced recently. I think the best pitchers were the ones who faced high caliber of competition in the last year and have experience playing internationally in either pro leagues abroad or past national teams (Nevins & Henderson). Henderson will continue to improve but putting her up against Japan, whose players have seen her regularly in the Japanese pro league, like Erikson did in the semis made absolutely no sense.

I think the offense was there. With Chavanne, Gibson, Moultrie, Arioto and Chidester making a balanced core of players, this team would be very strong by 2016 (and 2020) if pitching improves. Henderson and Nevins are in. Traina is out (at least for now). Moore is a maybe but she needs to see better competition more regularly.
