Oregon State Head Coach Kirk Walker has finally made official what many have known for months - the additions of former University of Washington and University of Virginia assistant Geoff Hirai and former Fresno State and US Olympic standout Laura Berg to the coaching staff.

You can view the Press Release on the Official OSU Softball Website.

Good for Coach Hirai.  My daughter had the opportunity to meet him when she was in high school and at an unofficial visit to UW.  It's nice he'll getting back to the Pacific NW.

If Laura can get those players to put in half the effort she did then OSU will get back on track.  Good coaching additions.

Agreed - so far so good.  The girls love having Laura and Geoff on staff.  They're working harder - with more heart and drive than the past few years.  Here's hoping that shows up on the field (and the win column) come this Spring!

Well, we're sitting here at the halfway mark with the PAC-12 Season starting against the Ducks on Saturday and the following is true and indicative of what the new coaches have brought - along with two quality starting freshmen (at 2nd and CF) and a UC Davis transfer at SS.

21 wins - two better than all of last year
6.36 runs per game (16th in Div 1 after last weekend) - compared to 2.87 in 2011
Currently ranked 26th & 27th in the nation in the two polls - not mentioned in 2011
Have scored 178 runs at the halfway mark - scored only 135 all of last year
Are 7-3 in one-run games - were 8-7 in one-run games last year

Now this is not the whole story, of course.  Laura and Geoff have brought new energy, work ethic, discipline, intensity, focus, and fun to OSU.  Though not yet in the top 1/2 of the PAC-12, there is reason for optimism and hope. The program appears headed in the right direction again.

The real test begins Saturday at 3:00 pm PST

Liz Santana transferred from UC Davis, not a JC. She is a stud!!

You are correct on BOTH counts!  I was wrong on the JC comment - my bad - sorry Liz.  And she IS the REAL DEAL - and a great kid!

Great start for OSU this week/weekend.  Looks like the coaching changes are working.  I saw OSU play just a bit at the Kajikawa and they looked like a different team.  Good luck to them this year.

Met Coach Hirai at the Rising Stars while he was with UVA, what a high energy guy. We sat and talked about the Linear swing for about a half hour. Very passionate about his job, the girls must love. Glad we caught OSU on a bad day, because those were huge wins yesterday. Good luck
