Here's what I could glean from watching in real time and the replay.

Dora initially calls the ball foul - both hands raised in the air. Erickson jumps out of the dugout, virtually sharing the 3rd base coaches box with Ritman screaming the ball hit the base. Does then points fairl, causing the PR coach to go equally nuts until she changes the call back to the original, incorrect call, of foul ball. I believe the umpires knew it was fair, but once she signaled foul, there was no going back.

Of course, neither of the stellar announcers in the booth even addressed this. If ESPN and USA Softball aren't going to take these games seriously, they can't expect anyone else to either.

The only thing they could've called is it hit Haylie in foul territory.

My comment was just in regards to the only way it could've turned 90 degrees and been foul.

McCleney 4 for 4 today vs Puerto Rico. Now 9 for 16 in the World Cup.

And a walk. So a 1.000 OBP. But probably doesn't matter bc none of them went for extra bases, right?

Looks like about 50 people attend this tournament.  They would be better off playing this made for TV event somewhere other than OKC.

I think you will see quite a few players return/make comebacks in the next couple years. There are a lot of players that want a shot at the Olympics.

I'm guessing team USA will look much different, particularly in the circle

Gold medal game today what do you expect from both teams?
I obviously expect Japan to have a much better showing in the circle and at bat
I expect an all hands on deck pitching.
I do feel the team that score 2 runs will win the gold
Edit I am not even going to try to spell the ACE pitcher for Japan but I do think we'll to see her in the circle. Although Michelle said she was dealing with a knee injury

Will ESPN please mute Michelle Smith's microphone? She doesn't realize the people that are viewing the broadcast are softball fans and actually understand the game. Where is Scarborough when we need her most?!?!?

Your post is probably the understatement of the year. Once the political posturing starts watch out. I'm sure ex-players, coaches & hangers on will start to come out of Mothballs to get in on the Olympic action. I'm thinking the current National Team roster in 2019 leading up to 2020 will look nothing like our current "fill ins" playing now. Chidester, Barnhill & couple others will secure spots but, everybody else is just keeping the dugout seats warm.

Who do you think will fill the pitching ranks besides Barnhill?

Great question. Much depends on who the coach will be. That's where the politics really begin. Walton, Gasso, Candrea etc...any of those 3 will favor former players no doubt. That said, Barnhill should be a lock. I have no idea what Osterman has said about playing either. And there are any number of current Pro players capable. There is still alot of time so some young talent could emerge out of the college ranks. Why there WOULDN'T be a heavy pro roster would be silly. We should send our best. I'm sure there will be some pressure to have the requisite few college kids on the team but, with few exceptions, the best players with International experience will no doubt come from our pro ranks.

How/who picks our Olympic coaching staff?

Sara G is playing for her NPF team but I understand will join Team Canada once the pro league is finished. Not sure if she is playing at the Pan Am Qualifiers in Dominican but should be in attendance at the Japan Cup end of August. Would be great to have Lawrie back but she has retired and not thinking of returning. Busy with family life and mother to two youngsters. Hoping Bay returns in 2018 but she too is busy with family life and business. Would be nice to have Sara G., and then Lawrie and Bay return to support her so they have a chance at qualifying for 2020 - again wishful thinking though. Without the top shelf pitchers it will be tough for Canada to qualify.

From USA Softball site:

As the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, USA Softball appoints coaches to the USA Softball Women's and Men's National Team Coaching Pools on a quadrennium basis.  Selected to their respective coaching pools by the USA Softball Women's and Men's National Team Selection Committees (WNTSC and MNTSC), pool coaches could be required to participate in international events, player evaluations, selection camps and other specified events as part of the evaluation process.  Pool coaches may also be eligible for selection as a member of a National Team Coaching Staff for a variety of international events, including the Olympic Games, World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Championships, Pan American Games, World Cup of Softball, etc...Coaching staffs are selected in accordance with procedures to be approved by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

When Cat retired 2 years ago she said definitively that she was not coming back for the Olympics if softball returned, that she was permanently done pitching. She is devoting herself completely to coaching now. Plus, she also said at the time that her body was, "screaming at her to quit." Plus, she already has an Olympic Gold Medal in her collection. I have no inside info, I'm just a devoted long time fan of hers, but I would be stunned if she announced she was coming out of retirement based on everything she has said about the possibility previously.
