(USA jr vs puetroRicoHere's a thread to discuss all these from the 2017 World Cup of softball
In the top of the fourth Morgan Flores leads off with a single next batter doubles to the wall. 2 in scoring position and no one out great opportunity for Puerto Rico but first base ump rules Morgan left early
She was out. Instead of runners on no one got on and after the ruling was essentially a 1,2,3 inning

I'm enjoying this game also. I was super impressed by Alexis Killjoy on the Junior USA team. Pitched one inning and she's not yet a Junior in High School. She committed to Alabama as a sophomore.

Also liked seeing Morgan Flores hit a pitch to her Husky teammate, Sis Bates, at 2nd base.

Not sure the coaches share your sentiments. Kilfoyl couldn't even get thru 1 inning. 3 hits on 18 pitches & 1 earned run, 1K.

Sandercock threw 43 pitches over 3.1 innings and got the hook. Gave up 4 hits. 3Ks with that expanded strike zone. She had so many runners on base it looked like gridlock.

Azevado couldn't miss the bat if she tried. 6 hits over 2.2 innings with 2 earned runs & a Walk.

Not sure where are stud pitchers are but pretty sure this isn't how they had it drawn up in the pre-game meeting. Did USA coaches think the PR team were a bunch of chumps?

Team Canada up next after their beat down by the Japanese team.

Generally speaking though, I will take less than 13 pitches an inning

Won't disagree with that number however, the book on her is she throws in the high 60s. Most of her pitches looked like they came in on parachutes.

Certainly the most efficient of the 3 but still put too many kids on base. And she was only one without any runs scored on her.

Expanded strike zone is an understatement.   did you see the strike 3 pitch on the PR leadoff batter in the 1st inning.  Almost above her head.   Guess when in Rome (or OKC).

The box score has Sandercock with 41 pitches in 3 1/3 IP, an excellent 12.3 per inning, a 0.00 ERA and a 1.200 WHIP

The other two had some issues

Gamechanger shows 43 pitches. I'd think most coaches would like WHIP to be 1.000 or lower. A hit per inning is certainly acceptable against quality lineups.

To me, no shame in a 1.200 WHIP against an adult team dotted with major P5 players. Married with 0 runs allowed, and that is a darn good job

That would be a CRAZY strike-to-ball ratio... I mean, 31-10 is excellent as it is

Out of curiosity, how many of Kilfoyl's hits were out of the infield?

Thanks, figured it was something like that. They also have Gabby Maurice.

There were two pretty bad calls in the WJNT team vs Canada in Canada's favor, luckily it didn't effect the result. The softball has been pretty high level from what I've seen, I'm surprised it's not getting much attention on this forum.

I think it's because the state of "professional" softball is so contentious with it feeling like people needing to take sides.  It's caused people to back off and care less, especially when you don't feel like the decisions for Team USA are in the best interest of the product on the field.

It's definitely not like the days of old when they had the best players out there, period.  Plus, nobody other than the intimately involved parents and people really care after the wcws.

The college game is still the ultimate...thus the name ultimate college softball.

I saw that Haylie McClenney finally got some at bats yesterday.  Did they say anything about why she hasn't been playing? I asked on the AL thread and no one answered.

I enjoy watching, but right now it is definitely a two horse race between USA and Japan. Canada and Australia do not have all of their best arms with them this summer, and sadly it doesn't appear that either country has many quality pitchers waiting behind them to fill in.

Canada will drop to 1-3 if this USA score holds. Australia is 3-1 with an ugly loss to the Philippines and a last second win over the USA Jr. team.

Right now, it doesn't look like any national teams are anywhere close to the Olympic form of old. Here in America, it certainly seems like the dissonance between USA Softball and the NPF is crippling the sport.
