Day 4

Italy over Mexico 6-0

Netherlands over Venezuela 5-1

China over czech Republic 6-3

USA over South Africa 17-0 (3 innings)
Chelsea Thomas pitched the 3 innings- 2 hits, 7 k's

Australia over New Zealand 5-1

Puerto Rico over Argentina 10-2

Japan over Chinese Taipei 1-0 (10 innings)
Run scored from 2nd on a double with 1 out in bottom of 10th

Canada over Great Britain 8-1 (6 innings)
As I was typing canada scored to run rule it

I like Chelsea Thomas but I hate 3 inning no-hitters so I'm glad south africa got hits. The only 7 inning no hitter of the tourney (where pitcher had to get 21 outs) was Stacie townsend of great Britain over chinese Taipei. She won 1-0 in 7 innings over a good team (that just went 10 innings with japan) and no hit them. UTEP grad doing good in UK.

Good news for winless czech republic and south africa- they play each other so one of them has to win. Bad news for mexico is they are only winless team in section B.

Rain, rain, and rain delays in Whitehorse.  If USA plays, it will be a very late start for East Coast viewers.    Frank

Afternoon games resumed after rain delays.
They are 2 and half hours behind. USA game wouldn't start til wed after midnight east coast time and with full schedules on both fields each day they cannot move games til tomorrow.

Good news is that Yukon is 24 hours of light this time of year. No lights needed at night.

Vonk has as many homeruns in this tournament has she's hit in her college career so far. Considering that number is 2 it may not mean a whole lot but hey...

Color me impressed.
A 10 inning, 16 K's no-hitter.

On the other side this is the second time chinese Taipei has been no hit in this tourney. 7 innings to Great Britain and 10 innings to Japan.
Both were 1-0 losses. Their pitchers pitch good but they cannot buy hits or runs. The LSU of asia.

I thought China might compete with the USA but so much. USA up 11-0 in just the bottom of the 3rd. It's been a complete disaster for China. Congrats to the USA girls though!

5 games at the world championships for Team USA.
60 runs scored.
0 runs scored against.
4 hits against.
2 no hitters.
1 game went 7 innings.
1 game went 3 innings.
3 games went 4 innings.

Team USA isn't using it's best available players and still destroying the competition. This is not helping get softball back to olympics as being a world wide competitive sport and this tourney is the last one before they vote next year. Sure team USA can lose in finals to a japan but overall they are embarrassing teams and not even playing full games. They have completed 21 innings in their 5 games. Hope Netherlands make it interesting. Scoring a run on team USA at this point would be something to celebrate.

I also echo the sentinments of others that it sucks that ESPN did not get rights to broadcast the world championships. Live feeds let you see a non-commentator game from 1 camera angle but you lose the charm, backstory, and tidbits that fuel a sport. Imagine the world cup without broadcasts. We would not have had seen the energy, fun and charm of sam fischer. Watch a game between teams you do not know the players from like argentina and puerto rico. No college background, no face shots, no close ups, no making faces to camera, no dugout shots, no shots of stands, nothing. You don't even have a program handy to look at. You hear the name of the batter, watch them bat, hear "smoking is permitted in designated areas" or "we like to thank our sponsors".
This event should have been televised. At least the playoff rounds. Sigh.

Unfortunately, ESPN is a for-profit organization.  If there was money to be made I'm sure someone would have broadcast it.  Sadly, there's not much of an audience either in person or in front of the TVs.

this is why it's not televised.  how do you broadcast a 3 inning game.. how about a 4 inning game?  do i really care who comes to bat for argentina when they only get thru the lineup once?
televising the medal rounds would be nice.. but hardly cost effective for espn to go to BFE for 2-3 games

.
Very true.
Part of what I was pointing out is USA dominance makes it hard to get games broadcast and it got softball removed from olympics and it is what would be the hurdle to keep it from coming back to olympics as competitive sport.
The sport needs ESPN to broadcast it but ESPN does not benefit in the slightest from broadcasting non-college softball games. Most USA games being 4 innings and an hour or so means they pay more to broadcast and cover the game with staff, announcers, crew, etc, than the hour of revenue from advertisers and brief window of viewing. And blowout games don't get casual fans to tune in.

Netherlands hung with USA for 5 innings trailing 0-1 then in 6th inning walked Arioto on purpose and gave up a single and Chidester homerun to make it 4-0.
Netherlands had 4 hits and USA had 7.
Jordan taylor and traina both gave up 2 hits and no runs. Pitched good.
Netherlands starter did good giving up just 1 run in 4 innings to USA.
Relief pitcher did good save for 1 pitch. They can make noise in playoffs...they just need offense.

USA has scored 64 and given up 0.
They wrap up top seed of Section A.
China will have #2 seed and Netherlands will have #3 and #4 of section A is still up for grabs still.

Japan has #1 of section B and winner of canada vs Australia tonight will be #2 and loser #3. #4 seed is up for grabs still.

So #3 of each section will play #4 of other section friday in loser's bracket. Loser eliminated. Hard road being 3 or 4 seed.
#1 of each section plays #2 of the other section. Loser goes to losers bracket.
So as it stands USA will play canada/Australia winner and japan will play china on friday in winners bracket.

speaking of televising these games.. how would good 'ol Michele Smith have handled that USA v China matchup this morning..   China's shoddy D would have given her plenty to critique... and i'm sure those pitchers for China would have been getting waaaay too much of the white part of the plate with their waaay too sweet pitches

Day 6

Japan over Italy 6-3 (8 innings)
italy led in the first 2-0, japan tied in 5th, both scored in 6th and then
Japan scored 3 in top of 8th.

USA over China 13-0 (4 innings)
Ricketts 4 innings pitched, no hits, no walks, 4 k's

South Africa over Puerto Rico 6-5
FIRST ever international tourney win for South Africa.
They celebrated like they won the world series. Happy for them.

Chinese Taipei over Mexico 8-0 (5 innings)

China over Argentina 1-0 (8 innings)
Not a strong day for china. Blown out by USA then scraped a run in 8th for a
1 run win over Argentina.

Japan over Great Britain 7-0 (5 innings)
Stacie Townsend got shelled for 7 hits and 5 runs in 3 innings...but she is still one of my favorite players.

Italy over New Zealand 6-5
New Zealand tied it at 5 in the 6th and Italy scoredwinning run in bottom of 7th. How? Error, stolen base, intentional walk, error, purposedly load bases then walk in the winning run. A walk off walk.

USA over Netherlands 4-0
3 runs in 6th for USA as insurance but Netherlands never really threatened.
USA played it's 2nd game of their 6 that went over 4 innings.

Czech Republic over Venezuela 5-2

Canada over Australia 2-0
Danielle Lawrie pitched for canada.
7 innings, 3 hits, 11 k's

Canada will be section B #2 and play Section A #1 USA on friday.

Does anyone have a total of runs scored by USA and runs scored against USA in this tourney, ala 204 Athens?   What is the ERA of the USA pitching staff to date?  Val Arioto is having a summer to be dreamed of.  What exactly are her statistics?  It appears that the game against Japan will be a showdown between the two "super powers" in international softball.  Should be a very good game, especially with Ueno in the circle.  Sounds like a 1-0 or 2-1 game.  I expected more from China, but do not want to take away from USA's performance.     Frank

Whoops, I just went back and read previous posts which note that USA has scored 60 runs to the opponents' NONE.  Wow !!!  Don't lose many games when the opponent doesn't score.  Some pitching and defense.  These young lionesses (especially those in the circle) who are replacing the heroines of yesteryear are doing better than all right in representing our nation thus far.  Frank
