Will Japan pitch Ueno against Australia and Canada during pool play? Japan and USA will likely meet twice in the playoffs unless there is an upset. Will Ueno pitch both times or just the championship game?

Not only will Canada get Lawrie and Salling back, but Caitlin Lever too. Team Canada will have 9 former Olympians from the 2008 team in Whitehorse. Same question for Lawrie as Ueno... will she get all of the big innings for team Canada?

Australia has played USA close in 3 of the 4 meetings this summer, and they really took it to Canada in the 3rd place game of the Candian Open. The biggest question is will they reach consistency?

China, Netherlands, and Venezuela could play USA tough during pool play, but Team USA will definitely have their hands full in the playoffs and medal rounds!

4 teams from each section advance to playoffs (8 teams total).

Twist in playoffs is 3rd seed from A plays 4th seed from B and vice versa.
These teams start in loser's bracket. Lose and go home.

Top seed from A plays 2nd seed from B and vice versa.
Loss sends team to play winner of loser's bracket.
Winner moves on to play the other top vs 2nd winner.

--The winner of A1/B2 and A2/B1 goes to championship on july 22.
That is 3 games total.
--Losers must win 2 games on July 21 to advance to championship AND win another playoff game at 1 pm on july 22 to play in championship at 4 pm. That is 5 total games.
--Winner's bracket loser would have to win the 1 pm jusly 22 playoff game against loser's bracket winner to go to 4 pm championship.
That is 4 games total.
--Championship is one game. Winner take all.
One team in championship will be 2-0 in playoffs winning both winner bracket games. The other team will be either 2-1 (1 or 2 seed that lost first playoff game), 3-1 (1 or 2 seed that lost 2nd playoff game) or 4-0 (a 3 or 4 seed since they start in loser's bracket and thus cannot lose a game to make it to championship). Winner take all. If your only loss is in championship so be it. Desn't matter how you get to championship game...just get there and win.

--So finishing 1st or 2nd seed in your section means you have the safety net of being able to lose a game in playoffs and not being elimninated--you simply go to loser's bracket. And you play at least 1 game less than 3rd or 4th seed will have to play to make it to championship game.

Japan, canada and australia will all play each other at least once.
USA may face 1, 2 or all 3 of them in playoffs. Most likely 2 of them and if an upset happens in playoffs and maybe just one of them.

Looks like a reasonable draw:

USA and Netherlands as favorites in one Bracket, with Japan and Australia in the other.  The wildcard is Canada... which Canada will show up?  Getting by Australia will be very tough for Canada.

My Pre Tournament Rankings....

Pitching

1. Japan
2. China
3. USA
4. Canada
5. Australia

Offense:

1A. Japan
1B. USA
3. Canada
4. Australia
5. Nederlands

Team USA or Team Japan will win the Gold Medal! Not a tough pick!

I really think that Team China and The Nederlands will battle for a bronze with Canada and Australia!

Chinese Taipei could be a wild card also!

not to sure you may not have a slight bias on the Chinese pitching
my thoughts.

Pitching
Japan ( have two very good and 1 stellar)
USA   ( have 4 very very good) good mix of Types
Australia ( 5 very good ) Bias good mix of types
Canada ( 1 very very good 2 very good)
China ? have not seen them for a couple of yrs

Defense
USA
Japan
Australia (no bias here )
Canada

Offense
Japan
USA
Canada
Australia
China

Winner
Japan
Usa
big toss up for 3rd Australia, Canada,China

Well it should be very entertaining at least.

Some interesting opinions!

Here are mine:

Pitching:
Japan (Ueno alone is enough to put them here, but they have some other strong arms as well)
USA (extremely talented but still young)
Australia (no true ace, but this staff is 5 deep and they all give batters a different look)
Canada (Lawrie alone is better than anyone on the Aussie staff, but Aussies have the better overall staff)

Hitting:
USA (when they are clicking, they are the biggest threat with Moutlrie and R. Taylor followed by the power hitters)
Japan (can be shut down at times, but the Japanese hitters are very pesky)
Australia (this line up does very well most of the time, but not against the elite pitchers)
Canada (I think the Canadian line up is more potent than Australia's, but the Aussies may be more consistent here as well. Salling and Lever will make a difference, though)

Finals Prediction
Japan
USA (Hope I'm wrong, but Japan with Ueno is the favorite)
Australia (Something tells me they'll get it done over Canada and the others. Over history, they have been more consistent. They are the only program to medal in every Olympics other than USA)

ETA: I don't know enough about the Chinese pitching to judge them. Do they still have Lu Wei from the 2008 Olympic team?

Hello Ross!

Hope you are well!

Would I ever have a Bias...?

Honestly I think Li Qi and Wang Lan can pitch with anybody in the World.

In 2010 in Venezuela they both were very good!

Lu Wei is still pitching in Japan. But was not on the 2012 WC roster the last time I saw it!

My Team Defense Ranking:

1. Japan
2. Chinese Taipei
3. China
4. USA
5. Canada

Simply my opinion.....

Anyone that has ever watched Japan when Ueno is pithing knows that they are a completely different team. They are full of self confidence and swagger. The other teams seem to be deflated because she is so dominating. That scenario alone could make all the difference in the games. It can throw all the statistics out.

What an embarrassing situation.  The world championships played on fields no better than our local middle school.

As my wife puts it, "Well, it ain't baseball."  (It's her sarcastic way of saying the women always get screwed.)

Well Lauren Gibson is having the game of her life.  3 for 3, with 2 HRs and scored on her other hit on Arioto's HR.

Yep less than impressive fields for sure! NPF might play on mostly baseball fields but at least they are in good shape. I'd rather see a softball game played on a baseball field, that a run down softball field. We have little league fields here that I'm pretty sure are in better shape then the ones they are playing on there.

Lauren Gibson went 4-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI.
Valerie Arioto went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI.
7 of the 12 hits by team USA were from these 2.
Moultrie had 2 hits and ricketts, chidester and cochran had a hit each.

Ricketts pitched all 7 innings, gave up 1 hit, no walks, and had 6 K's.
Samantha Fischer had a off-day with 1 error and went 0-3 with 2 strike outs.
Taylor was only other player to strike out. May-Johnson was only player to walk. Moultrie was caught stealing- the only base stealing attempt by USA.

Don't worry about Fischer.  Even Babe Ruth had off days. She's too gifted and resilient to let one bad game bother her.   Frank
PS - In the meantime, Arioto and Gibson are leading the pack.  Three fine softball players there.

interesting, but irrelevant observation. On the Chinese Taipai roster there are 4 players with the last name Ting.(must be like "smith" in the US) Then, on the Czech Republic roster, 8 of the 10 players that played yesterday have a last name that ends with "OVA." Now to relevant observations. Ueno, while only giving up the 1 ER in 7 innings, gave up 5 hits and only SO 1. Also, Great Britain only managed 1 hit off of Italy.(GBR also committed 4 errors)

Very nice pitching performance by Jenna Caira last night! She was making the Chinese Taipei hitters look silly! She gave up 3 hits and had 9ks! Melanie Matthews bat has been hot, hot, hot! She had  a solo HR and a 2 run HR! Very big crowd watching the Canadian team(I didn't get to watch any of the other games so I don't know how the crowds were for them)! Stands full and people standing everywhere! It was a very fun game to watch!
