It never used to be that way under Lisa Bernstein and Julie Standering.

Majority of hitters are RH, being in first base dugout allows coaches in dugout to see things in a hitters swing (calling pitches, whether they are bunting, etc)

Or logistically, there was more space to build batting cages or whatever on the first base side

Or they had space to build the locker room attached to the dugout in that area?

I feel that using the first base dugout takes away some home field advantage. When your head coach is in the 3rd base box it allows them to communicate with their team that is right at the dugout while on offense. Now when you have schools like Georgia where the coach does not coach at 3rd base, if she sees something, it is a lot easier to communicate it to the coach in the 3rd base box than screaming across the field. If the coach is in the 3rd base box and sees something with the defensive alignment of the visiting team she can just walk over to her own dugout and educate the team instead of not being able to communicate it to the team all the way across the field.

Yes, we feel it's only right to take away that advantage just to keep it fair. Plus we play 99% of our games away from home so being on the third base side would just feel... weird.

Excellent point. Minnesota does play more away games than home, due to the climate there. This disadvantages them in the B1G and NCAA tournaments. Despite that, they have been the best team from the B1G for years and will go to the WCWS this year.

True! Under the new coach, Jessica Allister, they installed field turf (including in the bullpens) and moved the batting cages to the first base side. They used to be behind a secret door in the center-right outfield fence. And before, they practiced in bad weather a smaller indoor dome; now they practice in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome!! They are the only college that can practice in a pro stadium, other than USC football, which plays in the Coliseum, home of the LA Rams.

West faceing would be way better than north facing. In northern locations, in early part of the year, sun will sweep low in the south. In the past we have seem some teams gain advantage by installing a heater in the home dugout, or having a heater in both dugouts, but the one in the home would go out, so they move over to the away. I know NCAA added rules. A team I know had to turn their dugout heater off when it was discovered that the visitors heater had not been working.

First base dugout on defense, allows pitching coaches to call pitches while seeing front face view of hitters...unobstructed view of hitter

As I read this, reflected and realized that Jessica's playing days were spent in a first base, home dugout. Many reasons for the home team to select a dugout location contrary to convention. Setting sun or prevailing winds the usual factor. Access to facilities is the next most common consideration, as has been mentioned in this thread. On a side note, of things I do not miss about travel ball, the scrambling for the best dugout.

That's awesome. CP celebrated 40 years fall before last. I got to eat and meet with some of the originals. some of the stories were just fascinating. The progression of the fields from then to now, equipment, transportation etc.

I am sure there are some Michigan fans who would take offense to someone saying that Minnesota is the best team in the B1G...

Awww! I forgot for a moment that coaches call the pitches in college softball, as opposed to catchers in college baseball.
