If you check back... I picked Jordan over Alo earlier this year - precisely because UCLA plays tougher competition than Oklahoma. And I picked Haff over Beaubien for that same reason (but now, 3LT is making a case that perhaps Haff's competition is not better than Beaubien's).

The point is that the level of competition does matter. And if someone wants to do the best job they can in selecting one FOY candidate over another - they need to make a real effort to find out the different levels of competition those candidates have faced... and then try and figure out HOW MUCH that factor should influence their decision.

We agree one ONE point, Hammer: neither of us could more strongly disagree with the other.

You're a knowledgeable softball fan and a loyal supporter of the OU Sooner brand; but on this topic, you sound exactly like one of those arrogant, elitist SEC toadies who populate this board in great numbers.

So, this thread just proves that 3turns hates Oklahoma and all the girls on their team. These threads are so predictable. :-p

Actually , it just proves that they are all just homers  for their kid or their  team and are rarely objective.

WHAT proves that? That I wrote I think Alo is going to be national freshman of the year?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I haven't seen anything written by myself or 3LT, pertaining to this discussion, which indicates ANY bit of being a homer.
He is a PAC team fan (Oregon) - and he has listed Alo (an Oklahoma player) as deserving the FOY.
I am a Big12 team fan (Oklahoma) - and I have listed Jordan (a UCLA player) as deserving the FOY.

And how on earth... does 3LT selecting Alo - translate into him "hating Oklahoma and all the girls on their team"..???

Come on, people... You need to do better.

Just answer me these two questions, scrybe...
Do you truly see Katie Prebble as being basically the equal of Alo - as a great hitter..??
Does the differing level of competition they play against - make zero difference in the stats they put on the board, in your view..??

Actually, I don't know the answer to that question, Henry. I suppose for anyone to KNOW for certain, the two players would have to switch teams.

Also, I'm not sure why you, lefty, janie or anyone else seem to want to lump me in with any "group" of posters. I would think you all would know better by now.

The freshman I have really been impressed with is Mary haff. Why? Because she came into a program that is rebuilding slowly but steadily and is making an immediate impact. Lots of quality wins, great pitches and movement. an era of 1.07 as a freshman is very impressive. The scary part about Mary along with all the freshmen who are a top 25 finalists for freshman of the year is they are just going to get better.

I don’t post too much about it because i know that I’m biased, but i don’t follow her numbers particularly closely and her numbers impressed me in this article.

For sure. Her SEC stats alone are impressive considering she's only a freshman. Her overall stat line is crazy good. Arkansas staff done an excellent job preparing her. Maybe a model other Coaches take with their Freshman. Just a thought.

Kudos to Coach Hutchins @ Michigan for what they've done with Beubien also.

I still want to know how Alo looked last night. We have directTV and it has no agreement with the PAC network. 😕 all i saw were score updates until Parker Conrad came in and one of my friends was nice enough to FaceTime me and let me watch that inning on their tv as she is a friend of the family.
So someone tell me, did Alo look spectacular with lasers that were caught and one that got through?

Not at all.  Every time she hit, they were choppy bouncers.  In fact, that's how all of Oklahoma looked yesterday.

Sling TV has a 7-day free trial - just choose the Orange Package and the Sports Extra to get access to the six Pac-12 regional networks. Watch the Oregon State games live or replays of the Oregon game. Cancel before the 7 days are up to not be charged for the subscription,

I'm becoming more impressed with UCLA's Jordan every time I watch them.   She has been the difference in both UCLA wins over UDub this weekend.  That HR today hit a tree at least 40 feet up, sitting at about 200 feet from home plate.

As to the "against what competition" argument, well, this year's UL transfers are some compelling evidence that a hitter's stats against average pitching don't mean a whole lot, and certainly mean nothing in OKC.  PAC pitching is eating up those hitters who looked All-American in whatever conference UL plays in.

Which brings me to Jordan vs. Alo.   The Big12 is having a relatively weak year in terms of pitching, so I would really like to be able to see, if anybody has it, how Alo has done against elite pitchers this year.

It would be really cool to have hitter stats that are just for performance against Top 25 teams throwing their #1 pitcher.

I will say this... I think it is unadulterated bullschmidt that a second-year player is eligible for the award.

that said, garcia, who was a second-year nfoy, is my current pick for NPOY

Top 25 teams are one thing, truly elite pitching is another. You can argue who's elite but here's what I came up with.

Jordan : Wall Jasper, kleist x2, elish, mcQ x2, Alvelo, Plain. Here are her numbers vs that group:

9/26, 1 2B, 4 HR. OBP .346, SLG .846, OPS: 1.192

You may argue that elish and plain are #2 and therefore not elite by defn (I think they've both been very good, but plain especially is sort of hard to judge). Here are Jordan's numbers w/o them.

6/19, 1 2b, 2HR. OBP: .316, SLG: .684, OPS: 1.000

Alo : McQ, Kleist, Rodoni :

1/9, 4bb, obp: .294, SLG: .111, OPS: .405

One big problem is the lack of data, particularly for Alo. But even given that, it's pretty clear to me who should be FOY if it comes down to those 2.

The idiot voters never dive in there... but that is very telling for me.... if I believed a 2nd - year should be eligible for that award
