I agree it's too soon to move them to 17, but that's CSM.

Cajuns at #16, seems a little to early to be that high. Probably should be around 20 to 22 range, but I like it. We will know more about this young team this weekend, thinking we beat Oregon State and win one in a close game against Florida, And getting beat in the other two by a nice margin, but not run-ruled in either. Just my opinion, GEAUX CAJUNS

So funny, ULL would drop with a 1-3 mark this week, but to me, it would be more impressive than last weekend

Hell 2-2 this weekend is possible, watched 5 games this past weekend, and while lacking power, this team has a ton of speed and pitching has been better than any Cajun fans thought it would be. They also are very young and are really playing it seems with that nothing to lose mentality as no one expects much out of them, after the departure of some key players from last year and graduation. Got to admit, Glasco has this team playing much better than I had expected right off the bat.

Turns: Please explain what makes it the "most competent."  Is it because five of the Top 10 teams are from the SEC? Or maybe because Oregon is No. 1?

Not trolling. Serious question.

JustinsWorldOfSoftball had Arizona at #14 and Arizona State at #15...

Which one of those two teams will end up as the higher ranked team at the end of the season?

not agreeing or disagreeing with this ranking but I will say they did a much better in depth job of reviewing the conferences and not completely writing off the top mid-majors because they are not P5.

Judging -- in the available empirical data -- dominance and record combined with a SoS consideration is what appeals to my sensibilities.

Dang, I always forget that empirical data factor. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Am I wrong in assuming that it is because Oklahoma is not #1?  I would suggest that it is not competent because of that exact reason.  It does not have Oklahoma at the top.  At least, you should anticipate that the two-time champion that returns everyone would require a knockdown before counting them out.

It is much too early to define a #1 or to make any evaluations at all.  You don't even know what the teams are doing yet.  Who pitched whom, and why?  What were the batting orders and why?  Were they playing all starters or a bunch of reserves?

Oregon has a tendency to beat up on non-descript teams early, really badly.  When they begin to face good teams, like in conference play, they may actually lose two of three.  Before I would rate them #1, I want to see how they perform against a daily does of quality.

I didn't see anything that impressed me this weekend.  I was surprised by the loss by Arizona and the difficulties of Texas.  The no-hitting of Mississippi by Lipscomb was a bit of a surprise.  But, I saw nothing that would cause me to rank anyone anywhere highly.

They beat up on a top 25 team in Georgia. Held a team that scored 23 runs in 4 innings the game before to just 3. That should impress any competent softball fan, no matter which team or conference you support.
