The folks on this forum may find this surprising but Governor Brown just ordered some very stiff restrictions on water usage in California and I couldn't agree with him more.  This is a disaster and needs to be fixed.  Here is the article discussing it:

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-snowpack-20150331-story.html#page=1

What I don't agree with is the money being spent on a ridiculous bullet train that is going to have no impact on reducing emissions from automobiles.  That has been proven.  The project needs to be stopped immediately and the funds need to be diverted to building as many desalination plants as possible.  We're in a drought and we have the largest body of water in the world right next to us.

If you live on the fringe of a desert, rain can be scarce. Kuwait and the Saudis have some large scale desalination plants. I can't understand why California doesn't have some entrepreneur building them left and right, unless it is a matter of Government restrictions stopping them from doing so. Maybe some fast track legislation would allow private companies to build plants and sell the product without EPA, or state intervention. I can only assume that the present day suppliers of water, cities, state, and MUD districts wouldn't think much of someone cutting into their monopoly on water rights. I was told long ago, that water, not oil would be the resource the middle east would descend into an all out war over.

Carrying that water to states like nevada and Arizona could be a "PIPELINE".

Most water district/water bureau meetings/MUD meetings are attended not by concerned citizens, but by lawyers enforcing the rights of the water rights owners to continue controlling the commodity they own, and the right to sell that water at a profit as high as state regulatory agencies allow them to. These same lawyers are often lobbying the same elected officials that control the price of water, and who gets the water rights. Surface water, reservoirs and rivers, and ground water are controlled differently by each state. In my state, the landowner controls the water rights on ground water under their property. However, after decades of lobbying, some counties, and municipalities forbid private water well ownership, or put meters on privately owned wells. The idea is to prevent people the right of drilling a well under the guise of water conservation. Then a government endorsed private company is allowed to drill a well, install chlorinating devices, and build pipelines with public tax money. Then the private corporation sells the water at a guaranteed profit to the very people denied the right to drill a well on their own property.

I've read some very critical articles about Moonbeam since pabar penned this thread last week.

I'm sorry. A lot of people who aren't liberal jackwagons are flocking to other states. We don't all NEED our Starbucks and restrictive laws and policies. Some of us just want to live unmolested by liberals. Count me as one looking to leave California; home to my family since the 1860's and ruined forever by liberals.

California Gov. Jerry Brown threatening $500 fines for long showers.

What if you weigh in at about 400+?  Do you have to have 2 water rationing accounts like they do when they make them buy 2 seats on a plane?  That man would need to head straight for the crack.

This is getting dicey.  Is this water safe for food crops?  Are they destroying the soil for years to come?

High saline waters pumped from underground wells drilled near salt domes, and water pumped from tidal rivers that empty into bays and estuaries have caused soil problems for agriculture since the dawn of mankind. Although you may have some questions about the technology used to purify oil well water, the saline water is not some new phenomena. Rice farmers have been using saline resistant crops for decades. This is not some new crises you have stumbled upon, as much as you wish to describe it as such.

We have too many wackos that will fight tooth and nail against anything that even involves the environment in any form and will place a higher value on a shrimp or a minnow than on human life and prosperity.
They have been trying for years to get a plant going in HB with no luck due to all the red tape.

That is the only reason I could think of that was stopping construction, that, and there are companies, and politicians, that have a direct monetary stake in water resources, and their distribution for profit.

Very telling how the left generally stays off of social threads unless it's right up their alley i.e. gay cakes, gays in military, abortion rights for the promiscuous, hands up, don't shoot, george zimmerman.

Social Issues in this country will not get much bigger in the next many years than the issue of water usage and water rights. I was kind of proud of dietwatereddown coke for at least contributing here. I would be just as concerned by drinking reprocessed urine [sewage] than what was in my plants but I guess being vegan you would have to worry about your water source for your kale.

If that is true, how do they separate and reclaim all the phosphorous detergents, engine cleaners, waxes, and detergent strippers, heavy mud, and toxic soils that drain into the one big tank they reclaim from? Just asking how they do that economically from a technological standpoint.

It sounds really good to say so from an environmental standpoint, but how is the real world actually doing it.

Here's the demand of compliance as received tonight on our latest water bill:

While washing cars, must have an automatic shutoff attached to hose.

Reduce watering outside to evening and morning hours, two days a week.

We have down-sized to a condo. HOA dictates no car washing and we have no outside landscaping for which we are personally responsible.

Direct impact of the drought regulations on the current Smith household:

Zero

But can my servants continue washing down my 3 enormous gas sucking SUV's in my driveway, in my gated community, and still allow me the right to voice my Liberal objection against damming rivers to create reservoirs in order to save a snail darter? I mean, this doesn't apply to the more equal animals, does it? Just those other lower animals, right??

Amber: Dad, is it right to allow a tuxedo rental business to deny renting a tux to a gay groom?

Dad: Honey, I can't say. I believe it's better to avoid deciding what's right or what's wrong until it actually happens.

Amber: But Dad...often times that could be too late.

Lindsay: Coach, is it right that games are played on Jewish High Holidays, but not on those observed by Christians?

Dad: Good question, I could say no, but I believe it's been that way so long, it might not be worth the fight.

Lindsay: But Coach, you always say, "It's never too late."

And so, it was changed.

California now produces more marijuana than Mexico.

EX:
Unfortunately, a reliable count hasn’t been done in years, but back in 2006, there were approximately17.5 million outdoor marijuana plants in the state. (That number has almost certainly skyrocketed since, given that the DEA has eased its enforcement, but we’ll be conservative and use the old number.) Meanwhile, one outdoor marijuana plant requires approximately six gallons of water per day during its roughly 150-day growing season. That means that, over California’s four-year drought, outdoor marijuana plants -- based on the six-gallon a day estimate, and the 2006 figure -- have used roughly 63 billion gallons of California water.
