Great game by King. One pitch, a bit too fat, was the difference.

King was throwing the best out of all that the Huskies have seen since OKC.

Not really....

90 or so illegal pitches weren't called against UW.... 1 WAS called against FSU

Wouldn't have given a nickel for FSU's chances after the meltdown vs UCLA on Day 1. Lot of pluck on that group. Amazing play by Warren on the bunt.

Most talent on a 2-and-cue team at PGF ever... not even close.

The second after our ouster, I got online and, for the first time, bought a print of the team photo

SO sad.

If we could ever put up pics on this site.... grrrr

What are the chances PR makes it to Tokyo?

King, Alvelo and Ocasio in the circle...they gotta have a shot. Canada has Lawrie pitching, but those 3 can give her a run for her money.

8 team tournament, right?

That play by Warren was incredible.

Knock on wood but King has been amazing this whole WCWS. She's been good all year, but, wow, just dialed in out here and on a mission.

Florida State is just broads out there playing ball like its a Monday night league game. They probably have a cooler of beers waiting for them on the team bus too.

Matt does a seminar at the Convention on these numbers.  As those of us who have a sense for analytics have known for years, the sac bunt is usually a poor play.  Some coaches simply refuse to accept the numbers, even though they are facts.  Similarly, baseball people for years resisted analytics, but every single MLB team is now on board.

We are still light years behind MLB with all of this stuff, but we have no way to get the data that MLB has.  Travel ball is just replete with poor coaching decisions, and even college ball still contains more than its share.

So, correcting myself for those curious.

6 team Olympic tournament.

  1. Japan
  2. WBSC 2018 Champion or Runner Up if champion is Japan
  3. Africa/Europe Champion
  4. Asia/Oceana Champion
  5. Americas Champion
  6. Americas Runner Up
To me, this reads as:

  1. Japan
  2. United States
  3. Netherlands or Italy
  4. Australia
  5. Canada
  6. Puerto Rico

I've been trying to recall:  did she hit that on a 3-0 pitch?  I know the count was 3-0 just before that, but can't remember if she took a strike.

I knew that for baseball, and I knew people suspected as much for softball, but nobody could ever point to any data.. I first wondered about this back in about 2008 when it became clear to me that softball players would eventually learn to hit with power.

The slugging % of the average player has been increasing and that makes for completely different tables than one would have constructed in, say, 2006.

It was clear to me that the chances of scoring from 2nd base on a single up the middle was much, much lower in softball than in baseball.    It was also clear to me that the chances of scoring from third on an infield ground ball was much higher in softball than in baseball.   Both of those factors made me wonder whether the baseball probabilities would still hold for softball.

There are very few pure set-your-feet sac bunts in softball.

Much higher percentage of bunts in the sport result with the batter on first, IMO

It seems that technically, Puerto Rico could take ANY kid not on the Team USA roster, no?

Hmmm interesting question. Never thought about that. Assuming that eligibility for their national team isn't based on citizenship but rather just parental lineage.
