I think Aguilar is the best shortstop in the Pac 12. Clutch hitter. None of the other Pac 12 schools have consistent shortstops like Aguilar. Amazing player.  If the Dawgs go deep into the tournament she should be a real candidate for player of the year.

Nice weekend for the Huskies. They needed that, not just the wins but the confidence boost.

I saw something at the game that's been missing from Husky softball for a couple of years-- an actual slap hitter. I'm talking about Kelly Burdick's single, where she slapped the ball into the ground and it bounced high to the shortstop. The Huskies in the last couple of years have been using bunting to get their speedy players on base, with mixed results. I think the true slap hitter has better success than a bunter. Here's hoping for more of the same in the next few weeks. That game today was a fan's delight. Go Dawgs!

Melhart has been struggling, batting only .287 for the season, which is low for a slapper. In conference, she has only five hits in 35 at bats (.143). Last year, she hit .378 (tops for the team).

If she gets on base, she's 16 for 16 stealing second, so is key for setting the table, and drawing infields in, for Aguilar, Stangel, Flores, Thomas, etc. Some pitches (and pitchers) are harder to slap - down and out, up and in.

Burdick is also down some, year-to-year, .345 to .354. An advantage for Melhart is she has 15 walks and is 16-16 stealing, vs 5 and 5-6 for Burdick.

Which is really my point- except for the instance I cited, Melhart and Burdick don't really slap- the do running bunts. I don't know if that is a technique favored by the Huskies or if slapping in the classic sense is no longer taught in high schools. With their speed, getting on base by any means is almost an automatic double.

How do you think UW will do against the two Alabama teams this week?

If the same Alvelo shows up, a good chance to do well.

Bama doesn't have any LHPs either (UW with 5 ER in 31 IP -- 1.13 ERA -- against LH starters in the Pac)

I'm not sure whether slap-hitting is all that important of an asset in Softball anymore.  Obviously you have to have pitching, and you have to be able to score runs, but does how you score really matter? Many players can hit it out of the park. I guess you have to play the cards you're dealt, and if you have speedy outfielders, it helps the pitchers.  Those type of players naturally become slap-hitters, but what they do defensively is maybe more important.

It's also cool that Alabama will be coming to Seattle next season.
