If USA dominance has hurt the world's opinion of softball and, as a result, kept it out of the Olympics then they're doing their part by not winning championships.  One would thing that every game they lose enhances the chances that softball returns to the Olympics.

Way to go, team, taking one for the sport.

LMU Fan - Given their druthers, I know that the USA International team would prefer gold, but as long as the pool of players in the US eliminates any professional players (that includes Osterman, Abbott, Finch, and Ricketts), and Japan's team is composed of professional players from their professional league, including arguably the best softball pitcher in the world, USA's chances for a gold are slim and none.   USA fans are spoiled by the Olympic years before the "big split" in our player pool (choose between making money or representing the USA).  We present a very competitive and representative team today, but we no longer can automatically lay claim to being the best team in the world as we have in the past.  Unless things change drastically, get used to silver or bronze and cheer on those players and coaches who have chosen to represent our nation, win or lose.  They are giving us what they have to give !!!!   Go USA !!!

Given the choice of of having an Olympics or having the best team which one would you choose?

Aside: I was watching the NPF championships and Jenny Finch was a visitor in the booth.  She claims that NPF is great for softball because before NPF all girls had to look up to was the national team.

Charlie - A bird in the hand -   if you get my drift.  As for Jennie Finch's statement, she opted to play professionally and would hardly endorse the international team over the professional league (all four teams). I would never knock Jennie Finch though as she personally has been such a great spokesperson and role model for women's softball and a terrific person in person (I have had the pleasure of meeting her and having a brief discussion with her).     Frank

"You play to win the game."

But I understand your premise, might have validity.

Regarding Finch's comments...

Once upon a time, ASA had a national tournament and the winner represented the US in international competition. In theory, a series of tournaments, a league, or like proving ground would be the source from which to draw a USA National Team that would play in Olympic and ISF events. At present, the spoon that stirs the softball alphabet soup has left a mess in the bowl and that possibility isn't on the table.

PS-thanks to you two for keeping us up-to-date on the travels of the group. Have known a number of the players and glad you both are posting.

I think it's safe to say that going forward both the USA national softball team and national baseball team will never have the best players in the USA on them.
