If you have 30 plus players and break them down into 3 or so groups then you really can't have a good practice. From my experience, 18-20 players allows you to work on situational things that are beyond taking an hour in the batting cages. Having smaller groups doesn't make sense, unless he had a rag tag group around to threaten the 18 or so that belonged on the team.
