Here's hoping Gray is recovering from something small and that she'll return in time for the next SEC series (two weeks away). Her spin and control have wavered at times here later in the season, which makes me feel like she's just a bit sore and needs a good week or two off. I'd rather take a few lumps in SEC play toward the end without Gray than to have her pitch at 70% the rest of the year. If we want to make it back to OKC, she will undoubtedly have to display her early-season form against tough competition sooner or later.

Kudos to the entire pitching staff this weekend, particularly Avant, for hanging tough and helping to secure the series over a gritty Mizzou team. Hopefully the team will use the next week's slate of easier-than-usual games (Georgia State, USC Upstate, Mercer series) to make some midseason tweaks before heading into Lexington.

Wonderful to see Milz and Febrey out of their slumps. I'm hoping to see Kendall return to her early season form soon, because we need her bat big time! I watched her kill it at Kajikawa this year and I think the ball she hit off of Kleist is still coming down. Excited to see her get back in the groove!

Go Dawgs!

Well, neither Gray nor O'neal have played an inning since April 4th.

More disciplinary than health related...maybe??

I'm very confused as to why Gray could pitch a full game mid-week, but couldn't leave the dugout for 5 consecutive conference games. If she has a problem that needs rest, why 7 innings on Wednesday? I'm a fan and I trust Lu, but I'm failing to think of any possible explanation for these events that makes sense.

this is my question as well! But I think O’Neal is just as important as gray coming back too! The schedule gods really blessed this team this week with Mercer coming to town, and not an sec opponent.

It was mentioned again today (after being mentioned here first) that O’Neal has a swollen arm due to getting hit by a ball in practice. As with Gray... Again, I think it’s possible she came back and threw that GT game and rushed her recovery, resulting (possibly???) in further discomfort with the injury. As far as I know neither player has ever been in trouble in regards to their discipline, but hey... Maybe I’m wrong.

I know the O’Neal situation is about her arm, but I’m not so sure about gray. I can tell that she probably is hurt because shes not even warming up at all in any situation.

Sorry didn't see the initial report on O'neal. Just seemed odd both were out with injuries for same period. The discipline thing seemed logical.

No way for that kid to end her career. Big time sucks.

Heartbroken for Gray, she left her mark on this season as on of the best pitchers in D1 softball, she’ll still be a big part of the team in the dugout, no doubt.

Beyond heartbroken for this kid - she really carried us on her shoulders this year and has been such a strong leader for the team. This is the worst way to have to see her collegiate career come to an end, but I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she continues pursuing the game once she's better.

It's going to be an uphill battle moving forward, but hoping Brit can still be a motivating force in the dugout for the girls.

so here is my question, gray pitched all seven innings the GA tech game, so do any of you also suspect that maybe the coaching staff and gray all concluded that she come back before she was healed up, and seven full innings of work was too much for her, which pushed her over the line? i truly think the injury had come along before the mizzou series because she fell apart in the seventh against tennessee and didnt pitch monday against the vols either. It may have occured game 1 of the Tennessee Series.

Truly hate to hear this for Ms. Gray and UGA.  Sucks to be denied the culmination of your senior year.

Just a prime example in life of how you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. Never saw this coming in a million years until she actually wasn’t playing. I was just trying to be optimistic. Will be possibly the biggest loss for a team in the SEC for potentially the next decade. Thank you Brittany Gray for everything and dawg nation is so thankful that you decided to come here and wait your turn behind Chelsea Wilkinson, and eventually filling in the holes fully-if not better than Chelsea- than anyone on this forums thought.

Oh my, how awful. She was having such an amazing season and was leading them so well. Here’s to hoping that Avant and Ablan can step up and be a good 1-2 punch. At least this happened at this point in the season and not closer to the tournament. They still have time to grow before then.

So glad to hear Gray's surgery went well and to see that she's already back in the dugout cheering on the team. Avant and Ablan looked great tonight, combining for a 2-hit shutout against Georgia State. 7-0 final.

As bad as it seems right now with BG out, it's also exciting to see what the future of our team looks like. Although it takes them both a couple of innings to settle in, Avant and Ablan have some really good stuff and are starting to improve game by game. Kylie hasn't been used much since the two dingers versus Mizzou, but she'll be out there this weekend and against Kentucky for sure. If the offense continues clicking, we can beat any team with the pitching staff we have. Granted, we may need to score a heck of a lot of runs against elite pitching when we get to the postseason, but I truly believe this team can do it! Either way, super proud of the season so far and can't wait to get back into SEC play and prove some folks wrong.

Go Dawgs!

I know! I feel the Exact same way as u do. I see so Many people on this forum scratching us off, but I think that avant and Ablan can be two very good pitches, with ablan having the highest ceiling. I noticed in yesterday’s game that if ablan can locate that rise just 3 inches or so lower, it can be one of the best rises in the game. I truly have faith in her because she has made so much progression throughout this season, largely in the walks column. Either way, BG was a big loss but I just got a feeling about this team and I think we will surprise some people this season!

It's going to be very interesting to see how Lu manages the staff going forward. I think using Bass and Ablan in relief of each other as necessary would probably work well because of the big difference in speed. If Avant can get some more quality starts and only need short relief or none it could all come together very well. Finding a way to get this team to OKC would rank right up there with beating Florida 2 years ago in the Supers!

I think that if Ablan can find a groove and stay in it, lowering her walks and attacking batters, she may be the number one pitcher because when she can do those things, strikeouts will rise tremendously, which usually equates to success when your defense has less chances to make errors. I know i keep harping on her, but i truly believe her ceiling is limitless once she can settle in and trust her stuff.

I agree! She has all the tools. Her sole problem has been the walks. She has averaged about 1 per inning in her college career, but she only walked 2 in 5.1 innings on Saturday, which was a huge step in the right direction. If she gets enough confidence and focus to consistently put her pitches where they need to be, she could be great!

Ablan will be great next season, i promise. Ive always been taught that your gut feeling will always lead you in the right direction and my "gut" is telling me that she is gonna be phenomenal.

I think Avant and Ablan will be fine if they both lower their walks.. Maybe get them some more reps this weekend against Mercer and throw Mathis in the mix also.. It's going to take all 3 of them to finish the season out strong!! I'm ready though!

I’m super excited about being Forced into this situation. I just got a feeling these girls will continue to get beater and possibly be the best STAFF uga has had next season.

Looking forward to seeing how the team responds on the road against Kentucky. I'd be happy with 2/3 wins, but I still think the offense is strong enough to carry the load and potentially sweep. Maybe I'm being too overzealous, though.

Go Dawgs!

In response to my own post, clearly I'm off my rocker.

Not an encouraging sign to see the way we've played in our two games against UK, albeit we pulled out a close one yesterday. The offense is headed in the complete opposite direction than we need this late in the season and the spark and morale just seems to be missing. I don't want to be a downer, but rather a realist. If we keep up this level of play, making it to Supers would be a pleasant surprise.

Really hoping we get our swagger back at the right time, but I'm not seeing any signs pointing in that direction.

It definitely looks like the loss of Gray took the wind out of our sails.

Have we seen Bass lately, or is she dinged up too?
