Really loved what I saw from UGA this weekend. I'd like to see Mathis get more innings and I'd love to see the staff strategy throughout the season. It'd be nice to see multiple pitchers in a game with the arms they have all year.

Nope. I expect her to next weekend, though.

With back-to-back-to-back weekends against cupcake competition (including our first of two games against Georgia Tech), I like Georgia's chances of being a one or two loss team headed into the Arkansas series (at home in Athens). With Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Missouri all struggling early on, it makes our schedule look a little less intimidating than some may have originally expected.

It helps that our two hardest series (Florida and Alabama) are at home, although Ole Miss, Miss State and Tennessee on the road will be tough too. If the girls continue to drill the ball on offense like they have been, I like our chances of hosting a Regional. I know it's super early to call that, but hey, I'm feeling bold. 😃

I'm hoping to see Kendall and Brit get some national recognition this week!

Gray: 3-0 (wins against SDSU, Utah, and Oregon State); 0.00 ERA, 16 IP, 17 K, .161 Opp Avg

Burton: 13-for-18 (.722), 2 HR, 5 RBI

I agree. My thing is the defense. If they are strong behind gray she will be lights out this season, potentially better overall stats than Chelsea Wilkinson. but from the first 5 games this season, the defense seems more comfortable, as does gray. And it also appears as though some power that Georgia is historically known for has emerged this season. I’m hoping for a great season. But I have my money on us getting series wins over Kentucky, miss state, Missouri, Arkansas and maybe the ole miss series. I do believe we will pick up a game here or there and be higher than 9th in the conference.

Woof...Winthrop looks all kinds of bad...UGA usually plays them every year (for as long as I can remember) and I can't think of a time that their defense was this atrocious. Dropped pop ups, singles turning into triples due to bad outfield routes, missed scoops at 1B...eek..

Their pitcher has decent stuff but can't locate it at all and is having to throw all over the plate.

Hoping we can pad the stats against this kind of competition the next few weeks before hosting Arky. Let's not get too used to this, though...

Georgia caps off an undefeated weekend with a 2-0 win over Evansville. I was super impressed with the Evansville ace, Florey, and could easily see her being successful at a bigger program. Although Georgia seemed to play a bit lethargically today, glad to see them win the games they're expected to win. With all these upsets happening, there's no room for error against anyone.

Bass was phenomenal this weekend, going 2-0 and striking out 20 batters in 13 innings of work. In two complete games, she only surrendered thrr hits (all coming in today's game) and threw the no-hitter earlier in the weekend. Albeit against lower competition, it would be great to see her get some recognition! The work she has put in on developing better control of the rise has been a key asset for the Dawgs early on.

Uga is done with their games this weekend against weak competition but it seems as though the pitching this year is very solid, In particular Brittany Gray. I just want other opinions on whether or not you think gray is the real deal this season or is it due to the lack of competition. Only time will truly tell but I am very optimistic about her this season.

I heard reports that she made noise at the National team open tryouts. I think she is legit.

Let’s be clear, her ERA was only 2.17 for the year last year. She just didn’t have any help. She pitched ALOT.

Agreed. But here's my issue. With exception of 2 games, OR State & OR, GA has played Middle School teams. And we see the results. Their 2 big recruits from last year, Ablan/Avant struggled in 2017 AND, have a combined 12 innings pitched this year. There 2 big freshman recruits this year Mathis/Napoli have combined 8.2 innings pitched this year AND Mathis has got 8.1 of that total.

Gray WILL carry the load but, Bass is not the #2 answer. The kid is a great story but not strong enough to support Gray in a meaningful way. Currently LHC has confidence in her now over the others though so...

Mathis is the future of that program. Just not sure Bass can carry that team thru the SEC tourney as a #2 then into the NCAAs. Why wouldn't Mathis be getting these ALL IMPORTANT EARLY INNINGS against JV teams? If for no other reason to build her confidence & get her some quality live reps. And Ablan & Avant are currently reliving 2017. I'm sorry, you can't expect to throw ANY pitcher out there without requisite reps and expect them to succeed. It's just too hard at this level.

And Napoli... .2 innings pitched to date?? Has she looked that bad in practice? What has happened to her to only warrent .2IP?

These early season wins against Winthrop, Evansville & Mrs Cleaver's 5th grade gym class will be at the expense of some very important, late season games. Like last year, LHC will look to her bullpen late in the season but will have to call Time because Mathis still has her cleats in the box.

Despite playing against mostly lackluster competition, Gray has looked stellar so far. The last few years, she has given up her fair share of hits and runs, even to smaller, no-name teams. This year she seems much more focused and with improved spin, control and endurance.

She's leading the country with a 0.00 ERA and has overall been outstanding with the control of the offspeed curve, rise, change, and fast drop. Looking forward to seeing how she does in the first two SEC series against Arky and Florida.

Also looking forward to seeing Mathis continue to develop. Despite severely limited innings, she has been a nice #3 behind Gray and Bass so far.

a staggering statistic that I noticed was her walks have been lowered significantly this season. She looks awesome. Now to say that she may be the SEC PiOTY may be a stretch, but I’m sure this will be her best season yet. The UGA defense also appears to play better this season. Doggett at third has the most chances of anyone in the Infield, but the least amount of errors.

While Doggett's bat has been a not-so-hot presence in the line-up, what she has been able to do at 3B has made a world of difference for our defense this season. And to be fair, when she has been called on to bunt or put a ball in play to move the runner, she has done so fairly consistently. DiCarlo has looked out of place (in my opinion) at SS on more than a handful of plays this year, but I think she's slowly adjusting to the position change. We know that we will actually be playing teams who put the ball in play starting the next few weeks, so with more defensive chances will come the occasional slew of errors, but here's hoping it can be a vastly improved defensive unit versus last season. That sh*t was hard to watch...eek!

We will see what Gray, Bass, Mathis and the others are made of with Arkansas and Florida coming to town in early March. Brittany looks so good right now and I'm just stoked to see her face some higher caliber opponents. Utah and Oregon State looked like good wins over PAC schools early on, but those schools combined have a 16-11 record, so nothing to write home about really...

One more weekend of lower level competition (albeit this weekend's teams are a major step up from Winthrop, Charleston, and ETSU) before the real games begin. Bring on SEC play already!! 😃

Barnhill has PiOTY honors locked down until she graduates. So maybe aim for just 1st/2nd team honors.

Tough luck that the team went up to Winthrop only to get rained out after 3 innings of play.

Albeit against a not-so-great Winthrop squad, Gray had 8K in 3 innings of work and Milz was 2-2 with 3RBI and what would have been her 5th HR of the season.

Bummer!

Looking forward to the games this weekend!

8 ks in 3 innings of work is good for anyone regardless of who you play in d1 softball, but I definitely would’ve wanted to see the team play since they made the trip to rock hill.

Here's hoping we can get a midweek DH added to the schedule to make up for those scratched games!

Come on man.  UNC not scoring until the 5th inning against Hampton Univ, now that's problematic for a D1 School. But Gray ringing up 8 kids against Winthrop, that's child abuse. It still boggles the mind LHC would throw her against a practice squad when she's got 6, yes 6 other pitchers who actually need the innings.

Somebody, anybody explain how UGA & Gray gets better for pitching that game? Oh ye forgot, prep work for the Florida series.

No wonder the last 2 pitching classes haven't lived up to their potential...they don't get to pitch.

Granted, the past few weekends have been against lesser opponents, but here are Gray's numbers on the year so far:

9-0, 0.00 ERA, 48.1 IP, 80 K, 5 BB, .105 Opp. Avg

Not too shabby!

That's some fine pitching!
A 16-1 K to BB ratio!
Nearly two Ks per IP!
No wonder they have not lost.
When do they start playing better opponents?

BG has definitely looked special so far! Her ball is spinning so well and at 3-4 speeds. Hoping she can keep it up, as she looks like a radically different athlete this year in comparison to last year.

UGA's one loss so far came to Oregon at the Kajikawa Classic. Lu mixed in pretty much every pitcher except Gray in that contest. I was able to watch that particular game in person, and despite the loss, I feel like it felt closer than the 8-3 score indicated.

After three upcoming games against UNCG, Georgia Tech, and Western Carolina, we finally dive into SEC play. Back-to-back series against Arkansas and Florida will get league play kicked off.

So what are the odds Gray gets the start tonite against W Carolina? No doubt a dangerous team @ 4-10, better safe than sorry. And that 0.00 ERA to protect to.

However, it may rain so, I'm thinking LHC will have to go with one of her "Mudders" in the circle. No doubt Mathis. Can't think of a better way to prepare her top recruit for SEC play.

gray didn’t pitch today. Lu used a combo of bass, avant, and Mathis to get the win. Hopefully gray will be sharp come Saturday.

Sounds like someone had their bowl of Sh!tty O's for breakfast!

Haters gonna hate... [wink]

But while you keep hating, we'll try to keep up the 18 game winning streak... **shrugs**
