Lostman - That's awesome.  I shared years ago how my daughters played some high school ball with Jennie Finch and we all remain huge fans.  That said, there was no pitcher I ever found more entertaining to watch than Cat.  Her style, her focus, and her talent were simply incredible things to witness.  Many pitchers you look at in the circle seem to be thinking "what's going to happen next".  With Cat, you could always tell she was thinking "what will I do next".  She was always in charge.

Texas was a regular participant in Fullerton and it was fun to get a close up view from behind the backstop when Cat was in the circle.  Those long fingers and arms, coupled with her great height and style, made for an incredible sight and she was a pure joy to watch.  My daughter's a little older, (I said that wrong in my original post), than Cat and I'm so grateful this sport pulled me in like it did and I didn't move on and miss the likes of Ms. Osterman.  She's definitely one of those who put this sport on the map.  Best of luck in all she does and thanks for sharing.

My daughter attended a USF clinic some time ago - maybe 8 years or so now.  One of the attending guest coaches was Cat.  She helped my daughter with pitching, but more than that, she talked to her like she was a real person, about what it meant it to be an athlete at a high level, and other things.  It would be easy to brush off a soon-to-be 9th grader trying to learn to pitch.  But, she didn't.

Instead, she talked to her like a big sister, which was very meaningful to her.  Of course, as a dad, it was great to watch someone of her stature being genuine with a kid that she didn't have to be.  More than anything, I think, Cat told her just to be herself.  Simple, but important advice.

It was really a great week, and her presence and tutelage helped to teach another young player what the game is all about.  It was a great example to try to try to follow.

mike - Cat has always interacted well with the young folks who tend to be her fans.  She thus has been a good ambassador to the young for Softball.  What a talent !!!  Some great career !!!  Good fortune to her in her life after softball.

I've posted words on Instagram, but I know not everyone has one. I walk away from playing with my chin up & a full heart. This game has given me way more than I could have ever imagined. And in the last 12+ hours I've been wowed and over come with emotions by the support and words of you fans!! I have to have the best fans in the world... Thank you for being a part of this journey, for sticking by me as I grew into my role in this world, and for always being there to cheer, smile and celebrate with us. I hope the ride was as amazing for you as it was me! Thank you... Now it's time to coach... Eat 'Em Up!

It was tough to watch her last night after the game.  She tried to hold back the tears, but just couldn't.  I'm sure this wasn't the ending she had hoped for, but no one thinks less of her for these last 2 games.  She pitched 2 gems, and her lifetime achievements are certainly something to be proud of, and she holds records that will most likely stand for many, many years.

Congrats, Cat.  You are a legend.  You will be missed in the circle.

Catherine - Your on field exploits leave a legacy that will stand for many, many years, perhaps forever.  They will also serve as a goal for all those very talented future pitchers who need one.  When I retired from pitching, I wondered whether I should win or lose my last game.  We lost 1-0 in 12 innings, and I pitched very well.  I felt comfortable with that as a last game scenario, and so should you.  In a 1-0 game, there is no losing pitcher.  I wish you good fortune in your coaching career.  Bon Voyage, Cat, in your next journey !!    "eight em up" in a brilliant career!!
