Just watched OSU in person against Georgia. Although the P they threw had a good drop and some heat behind her stuff, she lived too close to the zone most of the game. The Beaver D made a couple of costly errors and were on the losing end of a 4-hit, 10 K  shutout thrown by Brittany Gray.

Dawgs won 7-0.

This isn't to discredit the OSU team, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw a couple of hours ago. Both teams win over BYU starting to look pretty unimpressive too considering how bad the Cougars fared this weekend.

I know. That's why I said I was *going*to say Oregon State, instead of actually saying them 😉

Yes indeed. The kid can hit. That batting cage in their backyard got a lot of use over the years.

Arizona state has the second-deepest Pac pitching staff... they will be fifth -- at worst -- in the Conference

Could for sure see them in that fifth spot especially if Utah has issues getting back to form.

I had them in 7th because they lost some significant bats and replaced them primarily with transfers from Fresno State (2 of which were not even very good there). Macha, Ryndak and Juarez averaged a 3.79 era against the pac last year and got pounded by the top-level hitting teams. That said, the Hackbarth's look better than I thought and Howe looks as advertised (so far). If Utah can't keep Viramontes healthy and improve her stamina and OSU misses with Maizon(good against Okst, not GA), they could be 5th, sure.

I love that second deepest staff translates to fifth (at worst).

So, I thought about this for a while and I think 3LT may be right. ASU may well have the 2nd "deepest" staff.

Of course past performance isn't necessarily predictive of the future (look at Taylor Cotton, or Danielle O'Toole). However, Maha(3.14,51 ip), Ryndak(3.79, 40.2 ip) and Juarez (4.44, 41 ip) were all serviceable last year and project to be this year (ERAs/IP are pac-12 only).

Other than Oregon, no one else can say they have that depth of decent pitchers returning (or surefire prospects coming in if there is such a thing).  Not UCLA (Grauer(6.88,19), Taamilo(4.60,48), Azevedo(?)), AZ(McQ, Denham(?)), UTAH(Donovan(5.07,66.1), Hilburn(3.85, 20.1)), or WA(Manti(5.07,29),Plain(?)).

The problem is that "deepest" and "best" are not the same. Consider any of those ASU pitchers starting against the teams above (and OR). Against which of them will ASU not be a significant underdog in the circle 2 out of 3 games in the pac-12 season (You can maybe argue Viramontes' stamina against UT)? That's why I think 5th is probably the ceiling unless something dramatic happens (injury to a star pitcher, etc).

Exactly, deepest does not mean best.

Deepest is an indicator more of how much s*** may hit the fan if the No. 1 goes down or, in the micro, has a bad start
