Is there an official rule imposed by the NCAA that forbids shorts from College Softball uniforms? Or, why has it changed from shorts to pants? I was watching some early 2000's softball on YouTube and most of the team's uniforms had shorts as bottoms. It looks so vintage yet cool. Just curious...

IDK if there is a rule, but I think the pants look a lot better than shorts.

Sliding hard in shorts is unwise.

Aren’t shorts still mandated for international play?

My oldest DD started playing right as shorts were on their way out even in travel ball. I think they helped make the game look less than professional and to not be taken as seriously as it should have been (and is now).  Just my opinion.

Nowadays, I think the worst look in SB fashion is SB teams wearing boys baseball pants. They look terrible.  A lot of midwest teams (OH, MI, IL) seem to like them.

My teams all wear Gluv pants. Jonathan knows what he's doing.

They could start wearing pants internationally starting in 2016. You are correct until then it was a rule.

I think he’s referring to the ankle length baseball pants. They look horrible on males and females

But they do make female cut softball pants as well now. Since so many travel ball, high school and college teams are wearing them the major manufacturers such as Nike, Adidas & UA all make female cut pants in addition to the softball specific companies like Boombah and Victory.

I don't think you will see a team wearing shorts anymore in college softball. The only way a team might do that is if its like a 100 plus degree day. Its a lot of sliding and falling in softball and the pants protects the players legs from cuts and bruises. Imagine asking a football team to play in shorts, that would NEVER happen!

It’s funny. I remember when shorts started coming in fashion in the 1990s. Everyone changed uniforms very quickly.

The switch back to pants has been happening for around 10 years now. Junior state teams in Australia were almost all in shorts. Now nearly all of them are back in pants. The national team are in shorts but have been playing in pants for the NPF so will be intresting to see.

Shouldn’t matter what they look like when they’re winning...

Pretty sure that Vince quote didn't come from an online messageboard discussing uniforms.
