Pathetic. Not just a pathetic display by #15, but what were the refs watching to allow this player to continue doing what she did? It's a good thing no one was seriously injured. And the coach should've pulled her if the ref wasn't going to card her(and there's at least 3, maybe 4 red cards in that video). That's just uncalled for across the board.

I don't know spit about soccer, but rough play is all right in my book, but cheap shots are just that, cheap shots, and there are several of them in this video. The officials are to blame for not seeing what was going on. Sorry Emily, but #15 isn't a rough player although she could be and probably excel. She's just a cheap shot artist, and that is cowardice. Shameful exhibition of a lack of sportsmanship !

this clip has caused a lot of dialogue between former SEC players, national pool members, professional team players and the general consensus is as follows:

1. the physical play BEFORE the hair pull is pretty legit and not much wrong with it.
2. hair pulling happens ALL the time in the female game. yanking as 15 did which looked to cause some whiplash, not so much....
3. something apparently snapped with 15 after the pull.
4. the referee had NO control over the game and should have awarded her a red.
5. the coach should have taken her out to either cool her down momentarily, or if that is just that players personality on the field, take her out entirely before someone got hurt.
6. 15 must have been making up for some lack of skill or subpar speed to resort to simply body-banging with the other team.

i'm sorry if some of you don't know much about soccer and your limited exposure to the sport (especially on the female side) has left you with some uneducated views on the game, but physical play, which very often borders on "vicious" happens more than not.

my teammate who had a broken nose, and wore a face mask, had a girl on another team take the front part of the mask, pull it out and then snap it back onto my teammates face.

i was straight out punched in the face after some harmless shirt pulling, and my nose started flowing like niagara falls.

it happens. soccer is a contact/collision sport. being a player/coach that knows the difference between accepted physical play and putting another athlete in danger is the real problem with this clip.

Yeah, that was some excessive "roughness." I mean, not that I condone it, but I can see that happening once maybe twice in a game, but that many times. When my sister played as a defender she was pretty rough and would stand you straight up, but I don't think I ever remember her resorting to pulling hair (she was big enough she pretty much would just bulldoze you over). Actually the worst thing I've ever seen her do was a girl punched her in the back much like the first shot by #15, and about a minute later, my sister graciously stepped on her foot and kept going.

Soccer is a brutal sport, but if you didn't know that from the accident where all the people died in the stands, you know it now.

Rumor has it that PGP wants to pit #15 against Nancy Pelosi in a steel cage match!

What he should do is encourage feinstein to become a NY resident, like Clinton, so that we Californian will be free of her. Heard she might want to run for governor.

I am actually in favor of exporting MS. Pelosi, Ms Boxer, Ms. Feinstein and many others to NY so PGP can actually interact with them!!!!

One question to ask is that the refs must of been asleep, but was the coach of NM also asleep. how can a coach allow a player play like that and not react.
if i was the NM Ad i would not only kick the player out of the team but also do the same with the coach.

Lambert...

Followed an elbow that she took from BYU player with a forearm to opponents back.

Engaged in gnarly play with someone who might have made a slide into her.

Though making required contact with ball, dangerously made a slide tackle into a player.

And lastly, responded to a pull of her shorts with a yank of the offending opponent's ponytail.

Like the Boise St./Oregon incident, s/he who lands last gets lands best ... punishment.

She should be punished. She could not play for me. Her actions were over-the-top, but certainly not unprovoked.

In separate observation...

I don't watch much women's soccer. At one time, I watched (and officiated) a lot of girls/women's basketball. The attitude of the officials in boys/men's hoops is call fouls early and keep them under thumb. In ladies' high school and college games, it appears as though it's roller derby at times. Oft heard remark from coaches and officials, "They like it that way."

TideKid's comments are common. Women don't want to think they are coddled by officials and/or coaches. They want to play as tough as the boys. I'd point out, that in the men's game, officials are more prone to keep the chippy stuff to a minimum. Generally, the ladies don't escalate as did Ms. Lambert in this case.

Maybe officials should begin to call both games the same. That is what the ladies ultimately desire.

  • Bill i have coached girls soccer, my first request from them was that they should give 110% and also play by the rule.
  • If not then do not complain to be standing next to me on the sideline.
  • In this game I blame the coach more than the refs.

I thought it interesting that four of the fouls in that "highlight" clip were against Carlee Payne, BYU frosh phenom who leads the team in scores and assists. Payne is seen in the beginning of the clip heading in the game's only score, after which she lands on her butt from a late "cross check" from #15.

Personally, I thought two of those fouls were cardable; the high tackle and the blow to the face. #15 did get one YC, not for those or the yank down, but apparently for the trip on #21 outside the box. What do you think TK? What are the limits to "physical soccer", say when you've got kids on the field you are responsible for? I really have no idea; I don't watch much soccer but what I do see - ACC & Mid-Atlantic HS & tvl - is at a pretty high level. This individual's (and the officials'!) game seemed way over the top to me.

Gray,

if I were the referee, I would have given her a warning with that tackle where she got the ball near the 18. I would have awarded a yellow with the hair yank. She would have been dismissed with the face mauling. There is a progression a sound referee should follow to keep physical play under wraps. Obviously this protocol from the center ref was overlooked. On the same token, assistant refs have all the power to help the center out on things they "might miss". This was lacking as well. I honestly don't see much wrong with the jostling, hard tackles. After the hair pull 15 went downhill.

As a coach, I would hope that I have a good enough grasp on my players to understand when they get a bit hot underneath the collar.

In fact, tonight my college team had an incident not far off this topic. My player, who tends to more aggressive than most was getting into it with the oposition. I was instructing another player and missed the beginning of the action. When I see her get like that I scream "broccoli" which is her code word to chill out. If he doesn't we normally sub her. Today because I was busy did not see how quickly it escalated. The other girl tried to pull down my players shorts, then punched my player. My player then spit on her. After that the ref came over to break them up. As the ref was running towards the two, the other player punched my player in the rib and then grabbed her jersey and choked her with it.

While both the ref and assistant ref were literally 10 feet away as they say this happen, the other player did not receive as much as a warning. I went over to those two and stated, "my player completely deserved thatcard, her actions were uncalled for, bur how can you not even see the retaliation after the play had been whistled dead?!"

am I still upset with my senior captain or losing her cool in what could be her final game? Absolutely. Did she deserve a red? Absolutely. Do I think the other player should have been awarded the same card? Absolutely. Do I think referees make mistakes? Yes. But I also think that there are two other officials on the field to aid in helping the center when teir eyes cannot e everywhere.

I think physical play is completely acceptable and a part of the game. I bring football blocking pads out to practice and hit my players so they get used to what another player might do to them. I have taught them how to slide tackle cleanly, go up for headers, etc

I think physicality in soccer is perfect. I also think as a coach I should set a standard for the manner in which my players play; hard, not cheap. Cheap players take away from the game and put others in danger of injury.

You also must remember, most often a teams play reflects the philosophy and personality of their leader: their coach.

I saw that video.  She was awesome .  The only thing she didn't do was powerbomb one of those Mormons thru a wooden table .  WWE should sign her up immediately.

Emily - You are a beaut. Most of all, you have a coaching philosophy that is thought out and followed. If I am ever in the stands during a softball game and the fans get out of order, I'll just yell "broccoli". You go girl !!

Frank,

Your plans to yell "broccoli" at games might have the same response as does my exclamatory "CHICKEN SANDWICH" yell when there is a foul ball: shock, awe, and some people calling for me to be institutionalized.....BUT let me know how it goes

I have a buddy who works for World Wrestling Entertainment and the word in their Creative Department is that they want to contact Lambert after her eligibility is over and see if she would like to come and work there as a DIVA.

"Chicken Sandwich" for a foul/fowl ball?

In Nugget lingo, it's "YOGURT", but only if over the fence and out-of-play.

During one of the week-long showcase sagas, I grew tired of yelling "NO PLAY" on errant balls and started saying, "Yoplait". Which soon became 'Yogurt' and now must be explained to newcomers in our dugout, lest they doubt our softball culture.

Dana Carvey is from just south of here. He'd think it a hoot that a coach wanting a player to cut the crap was being ordered to (chop the) broccoli.

Bill,

that's great! I think it's funny how things evolve. I inherited the "chicken sandwich" from the fans before me who had been around when a foul ball was returned to the press box and the retreiver was given a voucher for a chick-fil-a sandwich!!!

Of course now they draw thousands....and that would amount to a lot of people eating more chicken!

UMassFan - In any sport there is a difference between being physical and being a cheap shot artist. The latter is cowardly and against the rules of the game.
