Former player charged with killing Iowa coach

Investigators work at the scene of a shooting at Aplington-Parkersburg High AP – Investigators work at the scene of a shooting at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, Iowa, …

PARKERSBURG, Iowa – A 24-year-old former high school football player walked into the school's weight room Wednesday morning and fatally shot his former coach, before sheriff's deputies arrested him at a nearby home a short time later, authorities said.

Mark Becker shot Aplington-Parkersburg High School football coach Ed Thomas several times with a handgun after walking into the room at about 8 a.m., authorities said. Thomas was rushed to nearby Waterloo hospital, where he died.

Several students were in the room at the time of the shooting, but none were injured, said Kevin Winker, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. School was not in session Wednesday.

"The people that were present were not threatened in any way," Winker said.

Becker is charged with first-degree murder and was being held in Butler County jail.

Winker said Becker was arrested without incident at a home in rural Parkersburg shortly after authorities received a 911 call about the shooting.

He said he couldn't discuss what Becker's motive for the slaying might have been, or what Becker might have been up to in the days leading up to the shooting.

"Motive is one of those things we're looking into," Winker said.

Winker said Becker used a handgun in the shooting. He did not elaborate.

He said investigators plan on interviewing students who were in the weight room and to look into Becker's past.

"Mr. Becker's entire past is being looked at," Winker said.

The school is in Parkersburg, about 80 miles northeast of Des Moines.

Thomas compiled a career record of 292-84 in 37 seasons as a head coach, 34 of them at Aplington-Parkersburg, and was one of the most well-known high school football coaches in Iowa. He was honored as the NFL High School Coach of the Year in 2005, and four of his former players are in the NFL: Green Bay's Aaron Kampman, Jacksonville's Brad Meester, Detroit's Jared DeVries and Denver's Casey Wiegmann.

Coach Thomas was an excellent coach, but a better man.  He was a leader in helping Parkersburg rebuild after last years EF-5 tornado.  He will defiantly be missed.

Oldscout, you were correct about the greater loss being this coach!  I'm glad I watched the clip but how sad for that community.

I'm glad you watched it,he is a hero in Iowa.

My son worked some of his football camps& played ball with some of his ex-players in college& he can attest to how great a man Ed Thomas was.The guy could have coached college a number of times, but instead stayed at Parkersburg, Iowa.He coached&taught to" make a difference" .

Bottom line that is what really matters in our life,"what have we done for others"?

Coach Thomas's son on tv speaking for the family ,asked that they pray not only for his family, but also for the family of the young man & the young man himself that killed his dad.
I'd say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Daddy O - The first testicular guard (jockstrap-cup) was used in cricket in 1874. The first helmet was used in 1974. I guess it took them that long to realize that the brain was important too. Some folks haven't figured that out yet.

I hope that insanity defense does not fly with a jury. He's gotta go down for this senseless killing.

While in most cases that's what one would hope, but I'm not to sure that will be the wishes of the Thomas family.

You might have caught a little bit of it,the family of the killer& the Thomas Family are close friends, along with him playing FB for coach Thomas the killers dad played for him& his younger brother is a Sr.& 2 year starter for AP Trojans. The day of the killing ,coach Thomas son asked people to remember the family of the killer in their prayers.
These are good people in Parkersburg,Iowa& as his son said,"we hope there is a lesson to be learned".

Oldscout did this man harbor some deep resentment for the Coach?

He did come in a few weeks before& ask if he could help as a volunteer coach&as I understand coach Thomas declined, but not until he had talked to him& told him he needed to solve some of his problems first& foremost.
He was picked up the night before at a house in a town about 10 miles away, where he was smashing windows out of a house. He was arrested& taken to the psych ward at the hospital& was mistakenly released due to a misunderstanding ,without the sheriff being notified.
I would suspect that there will be something to do with him being a meths user before all is said &done.
Please don't take me as knowing all the facts, this just comes from articles& friends I have talked to.My son worked a couple of coach Thomas's FB camps& I was born raised a short distance from Parkersburg, hunted many pheasants on that beautiful farm land.

If they only would have held him at the psych ward then none of this would have happened.

That's a f/n tragedy.

Don't know if any of you caught it or not,but ESPN broad casted the opening game for Aplington-Parkersburg vs Dike-New Hartford played at the "Sacred Acre" in Parkersburg.First game ever without coach Thomas.
FFF-Faith,Family&Football the theme for the community.
They had some very moving features in addition to a 30-14 win by Parkersburg who gained almost 500 yds. on the ground with the old wing T offense of coach Thomas. When the new coaches were asked the game plan, they said WWCD...what would coach do? that's what they did.
