San Diego State’s Miles named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY – For her outstanding efforts on both sides of the ball, San Diego State shortstop Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week for the week of April 16- 22 the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today. The sophomore batted .727 (8-11) with five home runs, eight RBI and 10 runs leading the Aztecs to a 4-0 record for the week.

“This award means a lot to me,” said Miles. “It feels good that all my hard work is paying off by getting recognized on a national level. The support from my teammates has been great, from throwing me extra soft toss to keeping me motivated by working so hard. The coaching staff has also been extremely supportive and has shown confidence in me throughout my career here. I just want to keep getting better.”

Miles had no trouble jumping out to hot starts with three leadoff homers in consecutive games to begin the week for San Diego State. The California native ended the week with a 2.091 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .842. She was also solid from the shortstop position with no errors on 21 chances.

“Hayley’s been great for us all season and it’s nice to see her hard work paying off with this award,” said Aztec Head Coach Kathy Van Wyk. “She just keeps getting better and better, but is still so humble about her accomplishments. The best part is that Hayley is just a sophomore. I’m so happy for her to win this great honor.”

Miles is leading the Aztecs with a .432 batting average as well as a .871 slugging percentage on the year. She has posted an on-base percentage of .518 with a fielding percentage of .929. Miles is the first San Diego State player to garner the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week award. She was named the Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) this week, becoming the second player this season to sweep the national awards. Miles is also the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week.
