    Big 12
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 4-0

The Skinny: The new era got off to a snowy start as the Longhorns schedule was rearranged due to snow and freezing temps in Austin. Despite all that, the offense hit .378 with 11 extra-base hits. The pitching staff recorded a 0.64 ERA with two one-hit shutouts.

    Notes:

    2019 Record: 3-2

The Skinny: There is no doubt that Arizona can hit the ball but the Wildcats struggled with timely hitting. Blame it on opening weekend but with the kind of power this offense provides, it is a little worrisome. Four players launched multiple home runs and the team finished with a .562 slugging percentage.

    Notes:

    south-carolina.png

    South Carolina

    SEC
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 3-2

The Skinny: South Carolina is on its third hitting coach in as many years and it showed. The Gamecocks hit .267 and slugged .366. Dixie Raley was the most effective in the circle. She appeared in four games and allowed seven hits in 11 innings.

  16. 16
    indiana.png

    Indiana

    Big Ten
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 5-0

The Skinny: Indiana entered the season as a Top 30 team for Softball America and a big win over Georgia pushed them into the ranking this week. Offensively, there wasn't much power but the Hoosiers had a .411 on base percentage and stole 17 of 22 bases. Defensively, they were almost perfect with only four errors.

  17. 17
    1-colororange.jpg

    Oklahoma State

    Big 12
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 4-1

The Skinny: Oklahoma State dropped its first game to Illinois but won four consecutive games to close out the weekend. The pitching allowed 20 runs but as long as the offense can score more, which they did, the Cowgirls should be in good shape.

  18. 18
    Oregon.jpg

    Oregon

    Pac-12
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 5-0

The Skinny: Despite the offseason turmoil, the Ducks obliterated the opposition. Freshmen Rachel Cid, Hannah Galey and Jasmine Sievers all showed they will make a huge impact for Oregon this season. Jordan Dail's spin was effective and she proved that she is a true competitor.

  19. 19
    Last: 14
    kentucky.png

    Kentucky

    SEC
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 2-3

The Skinny: Kentucky struggled. There is no way of sugar-coating it. The Wildcats have shown this trend over the past few seasons but it's nothing to worry about as they should one of the last 16 teams standing at the end.

  20. 20
    james-madison.png

    James Madison

    Colonial
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 0-0

The Skinny: The Dukes did not play opening weekend.

  21. 21
    Illinois.jpg

    Illinois

    Big Ten
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 3-2

The Skinny: Illinois started the season with a bang after taking down Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Houston. The 6-10 loss to Sam Houston State doesn't wash out its weekend. We will keep an eye on the Illini as they still need to improve in some areas to maintain their ranking throughout the season.

  22. 22
    Last: 18
    minnesota.png

    Minnesota

    Big Ten
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 2-1

The Skinny: The weather wasn't exactly cooperative for the Gophers during opening weekend and the tournament was cut short. But, the Gophers look like a strong competitor despite their loss to Ole Miss. Remember the name Hope Brandner this season.

  23. 23
    NCState.png

    N.C. State

    ACC
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 3-2

The Skinny: In what should've been a 4-1 weekend, the Wolfpack started the Jennifer Patrick-Swift era on the right foot. A big upset win over Arizona and one-run losses to Michigan and Florida, says the Wolfpack is a contender in the ACC. Freshman Sydney Nester got her first collegiate win in a complete-game effort against Arizona.

  24. 24
    Last: 19
    arizona-state.png

    Arizona State

    Pac-12
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 4-1

The Skinny: Arizona State's Cielo Meza struggled in her debut as a Pac-12 pitcher but Samantha Mejia was 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA. Maddi Hackbarth did the most damage at the plate with three homers and 10 RBIs.

  25. 25
    Last: 24
    baylor.png

    Baylor

    Big 12
    Notes:

    2019 Record: 3-2

The Skinny: If it weren't for the win against South Carolina, the Bears would've dropped out completely this week. They hit .274 and had a plus-two run differential. The loss of ace Gia Rodoni in the circle could prove to be too much for Baylor this season.

All four of these polls have Oregon ranked right around #20 (#20, #19, #22, #18).
I am rooting for Oregon to win every game they play.  But I do not seriously think they deserve to be ranked in the top 30 or even the top 40.

They have their first five wins (5-0) against relatively weak teams. Here is how I see the rest of their schedule playing out...

They play ten more games against relatively weak teams:
Florida Atlantic
Bethune-Cookman
New Mexico State
Army West Point
UC Santa Barbara
Pacific
Pittsburgh x 2
Portland x 2

They could win all ten of those games (10-0). That would give them 15 wins.
But - they could have a loss or two among those games. You never know...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They have 22 games against tough ranked teams:
LSU
Kentucky
Florida State
Texas A&M
Auburn
Michigan
Tennessee
Oklahoma State x 3
Arizona x 3
Washington x 3
UCLA x 3
Arizona State x 3

They could likely lose all of those games (0-22).
But - they could get a win or two among those games. You never know...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that leaves these games which should be competitive...

Texas Tech (ranked #41 in one poll)  1-0
Cal State Fullerton (ranked #38 in one poll) 0-1
For the 2 games above - I am guessing they win one and lose one. The win & loss could go to either team.

Missouri x 2  (a split 1-1)
Oregon State (ranked #26 in two polls)  x 3  my guess is Oregon goes 1-2
California (ranked #29 & #33 in two polls)  x 3   my guess is Oregon goes 1-2
Utah (ranked #36 & #38 in two polls)  x 3  my guess is Oregon goes 1-2
Stanford  x 3   my guess is Oregon goes 2-1

So they go 7-9 in these 16 games.
That gives them an overall record of 22 wins and 31 losses.

That is my best guess at what they will end up at this season.
So I think all these polls putting Oregon right around #20...  is VERY optimistic.

There is a realistic shot at Oregon finishing with a winning record.

Let's be just a bit more optimistic in those 16 competitive games results...

Missouri x 2  (2-0)
Oregon State (ranked #26 in two polls)  x 3   Oregon goes 2-1
California (ranked #29 & #33 in two polls)  x 3    Oregon goes 2-1
Utah (ranked #36 & #38 in two polls)  x 3   Oregon goes 2-1
Stanford  x 3    Oregon goes 3-0

Now they have a 12-4 record in these 16 games.
That gives them an overall record of 27 wins and 26 losses.

That still would leave them  well out of the top 25.
But... they could have a shot at making the tournament.

I think Mizzou was supposed to be a pretty solid club. Maybe it’s because expectations were so low due to all the transfers combined with the name recognition? I totally understand your point though and agree that they’re overrated.

No way Oregon is a top 25 team. Their offense might be ok but they don't have the pitching or the depth. I watched the game vs Seattle and Dail threw one belt high that caught a LOT of plate to nearly every batter, and tips her change. McG was all over the place. They will get hammered by P5 unless they can score 10 every game and even that might not be enough.

LOL at you guys' predictions.

None of you has any idea how many wins the Ducks will have this season. It could be as few as 20-25 or as many as 45-50. Likely somewhere in between.

However the season goes, I'm pulling for ML and her young squad. Good luck, Duckies!

That Seattle game could have gone either way. The pitching just isn't there for the Ducks at this point. 45 - 50 wins, now that is funny!

Between 20 and 50 is 35. How many P5 teams win 35 without good pitching?

WELL, Melyssa Lombardi IS a PITCHING coach who consistently was ranked in the top-10 in ERA the past years at OU. She could very well develop Dail and MacGrandle, but will it be this year? Likely not. I believe Oregon will go near .500 for their schedule mostly because of their bats. They have the hitting. I think #20 is pretty high for them, but you never know. They play LSU, JMU, FAU, and Kentucky this weekend which will definitely tell the whole story of where they can go.

She also had pitchers like Ricketts, Parker and Lowary, not Dail and Macgrandle. I have them winning about 25 games at the outside. Just dont see them being competitive with the top teams in the conference. I think making the tournament will be a tall order this year.

Louisiana should be no lower than 12th in any of these polls in my opinion.

Oregon at 12 seems a bit high.
