Hammer - Looks like a lovely spot at the Jersey shore.  I'll bet it is a super way to greet the day at sunrise or to say "good night" as the sun takes its dive into the ocean.   Frank
PS - Google Manolo Berrios Roig (my excellent friend) and enjoy his photography of Puerto Rico.  He was born and raised in San Juan but lives in New Jersey now.  I have his "Steps of Old San Juan" (his present to me on my 80th birthday, matted and framed) on the wall of my bedroom at home.  We walked those steps to get to the plaza of Old San Juan several times with his daughter who played for the National PR Fastpitch Team.  He was my interpreter for clinics in PR. Another good guy like yourself.

Hammer - It is a great spot.  Outside of our eight week old, we've had all our grand-kids out to that restaurant for lunch.  I'll let you know next time we venture out.

Frank,

We've had the coolest summer in SoCal since 1919.  Most days the highs were in the upper 70s to low 80s.  Sounds good but what came with it was a much higher level of humidity.  It was miserable.  Yesterday, however, it hit 103 with low humidity and it was a piece of heaven.  Any day where I don't stick to the seat of my car or sofa is a good day.  Give me the desert climate.

On the game front, they play the Virgin Islands today. It will probably be ugly as the team is winless.

USA 12 and Virgin Islands 0 in four.  Arioto in the circle for the one hit win.  Chamberlain with a home run.  USA is now 10-0 in Puerto Rico.  Championship play begins tomorrow
and USA will play the winner of Canada vs. Puerto Rico.    Gametime is 2PM.

Gone - Can one have a desert climate without being a desert?  Now you guys have me confused.  You settle that with Charlie.  OK, let's start with - Do you have all rocks and desert plants in your yard instead of grass??  I believe it's called xeroscaping and is used to preserve water. That's what we had in New Mexico and I really disliked it.  Anyhow, you folks seem to like living where you live, and I love living where I live, and that's the way it should be. If I knew about Florida when I was a young man, I would have lived here all my life.  I've never been to Southern California, so I really can't comment.  I hope that the women of Team USA get to be tourists in their off time in Puerto Rico.      Frank
PS - Daughter is hitting well, second highest on the team.

Yes, one can also have a desert climate without a desert.  Unlike New Mexico, the yards here are green and lush year round thanks to sprinklers.  But anything not watered regularly in the summer will be brown.  Mostly that's the mountains.

Charlie - In New Mexico we had a lovely house that sat at the foot of the Sandia Mountains.
When I told my friend Rich Hoppe (pitcher for The King and His Court) that we were moving to Albuquerque, NM, he replied, "You will hate all the winds".  He lives in California but is originally from Bayonne, New Jersey.  I found out what he meant.  The winds swirled out of the mountains and whistled past our house, and the natives called them "canyon breezes".  We called them "damned cold winds" - the noise was like a group of babies all crying at the same time.  It reminded me of the winter winds when I was in Alaska. In my opinion, Albuquerque was a great place to visit for four days but not a good place to put down roots.  We went there to be hands on grandparents as our youngest lives there with her husband and daughter Maya.  We missed Florida so after 3 years we moved back to the Tampa area.   Frank

This whole Pan Am thread has me confused.

First, the USA wins a trophy, didn't I see a picture?  Yet, later they're going to play for a championship.  Wait, no, there's no championship because of rain out so the USA is given the championship because they're the #1 seed.  Wait again, that rainout wasn't for a championship they're still playing.  What exactly is going on?

The days before the Pan Am qualifier the host city has the mayor's cup....basically a warm up tourney.
That championship game between Team USA an cuba was cancelled due to weather. Sad that Team USA's first championship game victory of the summer was handed to them without playing the game.
We know they are far superior to all the Pan Am teams and even in okc and Canada they breezed thru round robin play---they have only lost in championships or bracket play. They have the depth to beat anyone in round robin play. Cancelling a championship game instead of adjusting to get it in before the round robin of the real tourney starts makes you shake your head. Softball championships mean so little they can play thru in rain because it messes up media schedule to push it back a day (2012 ncaa game 3), cancel NPF championship because of rain and no reschedukle because stars on teams were headed to japan league next day, and here in international play they cancel the championship game as if it was a scrimmage. So they won the Mayor's cup tourney by cancellation and now they are taking every team they play  in panam qualifier to the woodshed. That championship game was today. USA vs Canadatonight.

I posted team USA men's fastpitch softball team winning the gold over Canada in a tight game (in the men's fastpitch and women's baseball thread......because they have all 4 at pan am games....women and men fastpitch softball and men and women baseball). Hope for a close final game and maybe that will get it an espn mention (then again maybe not since boys and girls little league is the hot things now on the diamond.

Cuba defeated the Dominican Republic. USA will face Cuba at 3 pm EST

In case you missed the scores...they weren't pretty--

16-0 USA over Aruba (3 innings) 0 hits
11-0 USA over Brazil (5 innings) 3 hits
05-1 USA over Cuba 4 hits
12-0 USA over Columbia 1 hit
07-0 USA over Argentina (5 innings) 2 hits
12-0 USA over USA Virgin Islands 1 hit
08-2 USA over Canada 6 hits/ USA had 7 hits

71 runs scored- 3 runs scored against in 7 games. Average 10 runs scored and half a run scored against per game. Cuba is the team that is saving softball in the eyes of the IOC watching this tourney. They played well against team usa. Baseball was competitive top to bottom so that helps. USa should finish this off then ait 2 weeks to see the fate of 2020 Olympics. I agree with something someone said about athletes like mary decker and others...compete for the 3 years and 11 months leading up to Olympics and not make the focus on post-college softball be Olympics or bust. Compete and enjoy softball for what it is not just for a once in 4 years moment of Olympic glory.

PS - Win them all and you win too much and by too many runs.  Lose a couple and you are pathetic and not as good as what is possible.  So it goes in fandom.
Go USA !  Once again, I urge all to read Teddy Roosevelt's short piece, "The Man in the Arena".  It begins, "It is not the critic who counts" and extols the virtue of actually being in the arena.  Personally I recognize and applaud the expertise and effort of those who currently represent USA in international Fastpitch without any need to find feet of clay while understanding the fallout from overwhelming victories, but also that USA cannot only play against Japan and Australia in every game.

Lots of pitching down in Puerto Rico today as Cheridan Hawkins and Jessica Moore shared the circle for a USA shutout win 5-0 over Cuba.  In the second inning "Chitty" Chidester and Val Arioto hit back to back home runs to give USA the 2-0 lead.  3 more were scored in the 5th to give USA their 5 run total. USA is now 12-0 in Puerto Rico.

USASoftball, in all their ineptitude, has nothing about today's USA Team game, nor the projected schedule for the championship. This is THEIR team folks.   Geez, and I thought that
the on line web that reports collegiate Fastpitch was bad.  After the preliminary games, this web has scheduled on their web  TBA.      LOL      Frank
PS - Please Gone, help out.

Yup...as I said earlier in this thread.
USA wins and dominates with their 3rd string team playing and it shows how dominant the usa is and if we fielded our best team it would be a worse beating. Business as usual.
USA loses and fans scream for cat and monica to be back on the mound.
There is no happy medium which would be team usa winning a few nail biters. Our 3rd team can dominate PanAm teams like Aruba and Columbia. We want team usa to win but we don't want to just watch them beat down teams from countries that have less population than cities in usa. Aruba the island country (like much of the panAm) is same population as usa cities of Burbank California, or whichita falls texas. Smaller than greenbay Wisconsin. Imagine fielding a softball team entirely from greenbay Wisconsin and it had to compete on the world stage. I support team usa softball.....but right now I am watching little league boys and girls and it is exciting and fun.

What makes little league softball and baseball great to watch?
There is no team USA. There are 8 USA teams ---1 from each of the 8 regions. Each is an all-star team from their community.
The 8 international teams are built the same way. They finish their leagues and choose an all-star team . That team competes to win state then regionals then off to play in little league world series representing their region. They aren't the best of Great Lakes nor the best of Michigan---they are the best community all-star team from Michigan who beat out other teams who won their state tournys and now represent the Great Lakes region in the little league world series. Team Canada is a team from a community in Ottowa. What is cool is the 8 USA teams play to be USA champ. Double elimination. The 8 international teams compete to be international champ. Then the 2 champs play to be world series champ. The losing teams play each other. The USA teams who are 2 and Q get to play a 3rd game against 2 and Q international teams.

The girls games today were good (except florida crushing Washington). The boys game had several close games. And you know what> Michelle smith was good as a commentator for girls little league. She was a different person than when she calls college or team usa. She didn't talk about her collge days since it didn't matter and she didn't talk about her time pitching or hitting in little league. It was all about the kids on the field.

You could make an all-star team from all the other teams at PanAm qualifier and still not beat team USA.
They are weak at pitcher. USA and Japan are strong on the mound. Our little league and college systems produce top of the world players. Japan is right on our heels. Some of the top players on Canadians and Australian teams played softball at a USA college.

If international softball was done the same way little league is done it would rock and be aired right now on espn alongside the kids. Imagine fielding teams from 8 regions of usa. Now you have internal competition as well. Texas and france are similar so why not? Beating countries that are smaller than towns in USA does not generate outside fandom or make for good tv. It is like going to a heavyweight bout that is over in the first round but the other fighter keeps getting back up until the ref calls the fight in the 3rd or 4th round. You are glad the fight is called because it is not fun to watch a huge mismatch.

Even taking conference all-star teams would work (mid majors are all together). Former and current players that want to try out for the team or are invited. Watching SEC, Big 12, Big 10, and PAc12 all-star teams compete against international teams and each other. Of course that will never happen. The best we get is retired players from 2 teams getting together for a 3 inning charity alumni event. But it is cool to see the former players play one more time.

Anyways......it is what it is so go out there and beat whomever the competition is. Go Team USA.

The USA Softball won the gold medal in 5 innings in the final Pan Am Qualifier game at Donna Terry Stadium in Puerto Rico between the USA and Canada.  USA won 8-1.  Sara Nevins (6-0), winning pitcher,  started in the circle and was relieved by both Hawkins (one batter) and Moore (two batters) in the 5th.  Taylor Hoagland had a 2 run home run in the second, and Raven Chavanne (2 for 2 on the day) had a 3 run home run in that same inning.  Val Arioto had a 1 run home run in the 5th.  Jennifer Yee (.667 for the tournament) had the lone RBI for Canada.  Team USA finishes 13-0 for their Puerto Rico stay.  Go USA and congratulations.  Onward to the World tournament.  Congratulations to the USA coaching staff as well - well done.

The Eagles with their gold medals and trophy from the Pan American Games Qualifier.

The Eagles with their gold medals and trophy from the Pan American Games Qualifier.

USA gold, Canada Silver, Cuba Bronze

Canada was 9-3...all 3 losses were to USA. The Pan Am field outside of north America is weak. Good confidence builder (and not winning gold would have been a disaster) but team usa can expect a tougher challenge from the asia countries like japan and china as well as Australia, new Zealand and host country Netherlands.

Qualifying for the Pan American Games, which are to be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 10-26, 2015 are: USA, Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Brazil.  Teams who qualified for the International Softball Federation (ISF) World Championships, which are scheduled for August 13-23, 2014 in the Netherlands are: USA, Cuba, Canada, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.
Note--Canada was already an auto-qualifier for PanAm games as the host country.
