Pan AM Games will Be in Toronto in 2015.
This means Canada automatically qualifies as the host country.

Where exactly in Puerto Rico will the world qualifier be held?  I read San Juan, but will it really be at Donna Terry stadium in Guenabo?  I did clinics there.  The only other stadium that I know of is behind the big hotel (built in 1939) that looks like a ship - next to the Caribe Hilton.  Radisson Normandy I think.  I can't think of a complex that would house comfortably such a tournament.  Course it's been a while.  I heard that the fields in Canada were less than playable.   Frank

Will the USA roster be the same in Puerto Rico as it was for the Canadian open?   Coaching staff?

Frank,

Karen Weekly is on the staff in Puerto Rico. I think the roster is basically the same except Amber Freeman who is an alternate.

I heard the same. One infielder told me she actually found a nail in the dirt at one point. Needless to say, she was a bit concerned for her safety throughout.

Why is it that the elite level of softball (National team and NPF) has poorer playing conditions than even the average college venue?

Because college has the built in financial structure?  Because collegiate sports can pull in the viewership (and thus justify the money) for these sports that higher level pro can't, because of the existing connection to one's alma mater?

It's pretty sad, but it is what it is.

IMHO, the NPF needs to either have their own stadiums like two teams do or they need to use college stadiums, not minor league  fields.  Also feel they should do some showcase type games around some of the recent big name grads colleges and at the WCWS, ASA GOLDS, and PREMIERE to market and promote it better.

NPF, to me, would do better as an alumni league, USING the college facilities.

UCLA, Alabama, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Arizona (or some variation)

With two best-of-the-rest teams to make it eight.

I believe they would solve many problems with that motif....

Susan - I agree 100%.  Well said.  When I was coaching, I never overlooked the benefits derived from personal and general public relations.  As a wise man once said to me, "Do not hide your light under a bushel basket".  Yet, one must be deft in doing so so that it doesn't sound like bragging, hubris.       Frank

PS - A really great article in the New Yorker is available concerning the NY/NJ Comets in the women's fastpitch pro league.  I truly enjoyed the read.  I already congratulated my former high school student, my last catcher when I retired from Fastpitch pitching, and good friend, Jay Nelson (coach of both Rutgers University and the NY/NJ Comets of the Pro league) on having reached what many will consider the pinnacle of his chosen career as a coach of women's fastpitch. Well done, my friend and teammate.

The NPF has come to Cathedral City tournament on multiple occasions.  It is a very lightly attended game.  The UCLA and AZ games at Cathedral City pull in more fans than the NPF game does.

Either last year or the year before it was the USSSA Pride vs. Concordia Unvierstiy.  That is one of the big failures to me.  No one wants to see the NPF beat up on some lowly college program.  It'd be nicer to see a Osterman vs. Abbott showing, or at least something equivalent.  The only reason I wanted to watch the NPF vs. Concordia game is because Katie Cotta would be pitching for Concordia.

I think the NPF showing up at the PGF tournament would be a very hard sell.  This is a recruiting trip for everyone involved.  Coaches, Players, Parents, etc.  At this time in the sport, there are very few parents/players that will even stay around to watch opponents games during the tournament.  They've all been out there playing enough, and surely don't want to have to watch more games.  And for many it's a vacation, so as soon as the softball games end for the day, they are trying to get to the beach and other touristy spots.

The NPF showing up at college tournaments would be much better in my opinion because these players have left the recruiting trail, and the fans in the stands are there to see softball not worry about the recruiting aspect of the game.  The WCWS would be a great veneue, the Cathedral City would be a great venue, and Citrus Classic (isn't that what it's called) would be a great venue.   Or at least three great places to start.

Free admission to an NPF game at WCWS would go a long way, granted the "free admission" thing would be a little much for them to handle/agree to.

USA has won two - 16-0 in three and 11-0 in five in the Pan Am qualifier for the worlds being held in San Juan, PR.  That was after they won 4 straight to win gold in the Mayor's Cup, a preliminary tournament.  Tomorrow is a test against Cuba. This is the same USA International Team that competed in the Canadian Open.  They are now 6-0 in Puerto Rico.    Frank

Cuba 1 and USA 0 in the fourth.  USA with 0 hits, and Cuba with 4.  Hawkins in the circle for USA.

Edit - Tropical storm.  The team waited at the field for 3 hours and is now back at the hotel.  Storms like this are disruptive of any tournament.

Gone - USA 5-1 over Cuba to go 7-0 in Puerto Rico.  Ariotto  with a 2 RBI double.  Sara Nevins with no hits, no runs and 6 Ks in last 4 innings of relief of Hawkins gets the win.

Without Japan or Australia playing in this tournament and having some of these "stellar" countries like Belize and Aruba playing it kind of reminds me of WWF.  Everyone knows who is going to win and the only people watching are the few crazy fans (or relatives).  Oh well, football starts soon!  My money is on Hulk Hogan to win; I mean USA!

Zone - Since the Pan Am Qualifier is a geographic tournament to decide entrance into the world tournament, one will not find those teams you mentioned (Japan and Australia) present.  One would assume that they will be present at the world tournament, one step up from regional qualifier play.  Also, you will find some very weak teams present at regional qualifiers.  I would hope that true Fastpitch fans would consider that, and consider the effort and not the technical expertise that some of the less skilled teams put forth. Give credit where credit is due.  Every game cannot be USA vs. Japan if world qualifiers are being played.  In this current tournament USA would have to be the favorite, but there is the potential for upsets (note Cuba's 1-0 no hit lead over USA in yesterday's fourth inning).  Canada lies ahead. Enjoy that Fastpitch is being played internationally by females.      Frank
PS - Remember when Eddie Feigner (King and His Court) used to begin his speech to the crowd before each game, " Folks, the outcome of this game is already decided, so just relax and enjoy the game".  One could say that about some international competition, but certainly not all.

What Japan or Australia would be doing at the Pan Am Qualifier, I surely don't know.

USA 12 and Columbia 0 in four.  The kid from Tulsa (Cregar) was the winning pitcher and base hits were spread over the lineup for USA    Frank
PS - USA is now 8-0.

Puerto Rico is a US Territory and they support any and all team usa athletes that come (or usa sports teams). They are great fans and treat events like world cup. Team USa softball years ago made newspapers when they arrived in brazil , got mobbed, security had to hold back fans wanting to get at osterman, abbott, Finch and Mendoza. Puerto Rico celebrates Lisa Fernandez still as one of their great athletes (mom was Puerto rican and dad Cuban). We take sporting events for granted in USA since we have so so many of them and several going on at once and see superstars daily. In PanAM countries this is notthe case. They have their soccer stars, and track and field stars and boxers. Winter sports are basically invisible and there is no college of pro football, basketball, nor hockey. Baseball is Huge and softball right behind it. Ironically men's softball is bigger in many of these countries than women's softball (same with new Zealand). They give it the soccer treatment. Women's softball has larger and louder more enthusiastic crowds than they do in USA. Fans cheer for all the teams in all the games not just the home team. Great atmosphere. Negative of pan am qualifier is it is at the same time as little league world series for boys and girls and ESPn does not even mention it or scroll it on bottom. Little league had a ticker. Also note--Men's fastpitch softball team usa is at pan am qualifier too and got no mention either.

King and His court to softball is same as Harlem globetrotters for basketball--you aren't there to watch a competitive game; you are there to be see the antics and laugh and be entertained. You aren't cheering for either-- you are watching tricks , antics, theatrics and shenanigans.

Knowing the outcome of a real sporting event means the competition level is poor and it is not an Olympic quality sport. People watch to see the upset and when the superior team gets a huge league interst in the game is just the players and their stats...and their family and friends watching them play win or lose.
The USA is using it's 3rd string players---if the top players were not in NPF and playing this would be the USA futures team watching Abbott, Osterman, etc. pitch and others hit and field and win even larger than 16-0.
USA lost in okc to japan and in Canada lost to japan and Australia and fans were complaining team usa was using it's 3rd string. Now with the 3rd string shutting out teams and run ruling them all in PanAm qualifier it shows how uncompetitive softball is. Japan and Australia can compete with out 3rd string using their best. This does not bode well for selection as an Olympic event in 2020.
We all here love and support the team. I am speaking as a international softball fan that I am disappointed in how the sport has grown outside of usa. Last time brazil was competitive was when half their roster was Japanese. Basically what Outofthezone was eluding to is true. People rather follow little league, not knowing any of the kids on either team, or follow pre-season pro and college football than team usa dominating in softball with it's 3rd tier team (love and support the team but the best are in npf).

It is a catche 22. When team usa wins they are supposed to and they are not supposed to lose.....this means when they win it is ho-hum expected over competition top PGF  teams could beat. When they lose it is because the USa is not fielding it's best team but using it's USA futures team. Winning at PanAm is expected...losing would have been a disaster. Congrats to team usa girls. Not their fault. They have to play who is on the field against them.

The U.S. claimed its first Gold Medal of the 2013 season in an anti-climatic turn of events as rain caused a cancellation of the Championship Game at the Mayor's Cup in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  After several days of inclement weather, tournament officials determined that the remaining medal rounds would be cancelled with the No. 1 seed USA taking the gold. Cuba, who finished round-robin action as the No. 2 seed, came away with silver while Canada took the bronze.

The team had an impressive showing at the Mayor's Cup despite rain delays and game cancellations. The Red, White and Blue outscored opponents 30 - 8 with the pitching staff combining for a 1.88 ERA. The offense continued to roll as the team collected 26 hits for a .299 batting average.

Championships......as in more than once.
Last year's NPF championship was in Illinois

It rained on WCWS in 2012 and 2013 and it rained in so bad the Championship in Puerto rico was cancelled (which is silly since that same venue was hosting the pan Am qualifier and they could have adjusted to fit it in...but since it was basically a warm-up tourney they did not care). NPF championship was cancelled. Little league softball games had rain as did the little league baseball.

Charlie - Is California a desert??  Sounds like a brown landscape. That is one of the reasons we left New Mexico.   We get very little rain in June here in central Florida but July makes up for it.  Our landscape is lush and green, and our plants are happy and our lake is full.  Still manage to get in plenty of softball and minor and major league baseball in our area. Rains are usually in the late evening or nighttime hours - lots of thunder and lightening.  Some humidity would bother those not used to it. Usually in the 90s during the day and 70s at night.
During our Fastball  clinics in Puerto Rico years back, we ran into rain only one morning in two years, and it cleared up and the fields were playable by 1PM.  Donna Terry Stadium in Guaynabo was terrific as were all the people connected to the clinics. Loved the two kids coming out of the mountains on horseback to attend the clinics.  Loved the night singing of the noisy coqui. "Ko-kee, Ko-kee".   Loved the art festival and salsa  in Barrinquetas up in the mountains.  Loved Old San Juan and the Beaches on the Caribbean.  Loved the fortresses at San Cristobel and El Morro.  Loved the cafes on the Caribbean at night in Isla Verde with the water splashing the breakwaters below our tables.   Donna Terry Stadium is one of the venues for this Pan Am Qualifier. USA is 9-0 thus far. I hope that the kids on the USA roster have as great a time in PR as we did. Terrific memories.            Frank

Yet, in the PGF thread you commented on how nice and manicured the SoCal fields are.
