Has Cat added 5 mph since college or were today's radar speeds 'enhanced'?

If ESPN was a cop all of their tickets would get thrown out.
I don't know if by inflating numbers they feel it makes the game more impressive but they have been getting steadily more generous with each event they televise.

I hear enhanced numbers on TV all the time and chuckle. 70 MPH is a magic number these days for female superstars.   I was privy to a session in Tampa when Nuveman was catching Cat.  She kept saying, "Too fast, Cat".  Her meaning was simply that if Cat threw above let's say 62 MPH (she is capable of more), it took away from her marvelous movement which , along with control of spots, is Cat's secret to success.  If Cat wanted to really let one fly, she is a smart enough pitcher to use the excess speed as a fast change of speeds.  70MPH - I really don't think so.  Maybe 65-67 on a single pitch. Exaggerations, however,  sell media guides and jerseys.    Frank

PS - I used to read about certain men throwing 110 or 115 MPH, and I doubted it as I had faced them (they were very fast, but not that fast) , so I had one of our coaches from my softball schools who was playing in a world tournament take our "Jugs" gun and gun the fastest men pitchers in the world.   They topped out at 86-87 MPH.  That is very, very fast. Don't believe everything you see and hear on TV.  For females, power pitchers throw in the high 60's with an occasional pitch that tops 70MPH - that is blazing fast.

I have seen Cat throw several times this year.  On average her best stuff is around 62-63 mph, and rarely will throw a "heater" that might top out at 65mph.

Monica tops out around 70 mph but the media says she is throwing 73-74 mph.  I dont know why the media feels like it needs to lie about pitching speeds.    The great majority of fans are ignorant to the speeds and just want to see them play.  The strike zones that Cat and Monica get are not the same as what the rest of the pitchers get either.

Susan - Hyperbole sells.  Can you even imagine catching a softball thrown at 115 MPH, yet media folk try to sell that fantasy in men's elite to a gullible public.  Your numbers for female pitchers are right on. So are 86 -87 for men's elite.  Then, of course, there is that ever lovin "In baseball that translates into . . .".  Well, maybe that's necessary to sell the game but I find it offensive because my view of our game can stand alone.    Frank
PS - Great to see that you support women's fastpitch, especially around Kississimee.  We old Floridians do have an opportunity to make an impact on "our game", even now.   Sounds like you know a bit about fastpitch.  As for strike zone advantage, it's a well know fact in the game that umpires are influenced by reputations, some more than others. There is also a rumor that certain hitters get the same advantage.

The same media that in canada say Ueno throws 75 mph. Trying to sell the game to male sports fans with a stat they can relate to and say wow...I need to check out a softball game.

Galati was clocked at 70 on ESPN over the weekend as well, with a rise at 68. She typically topped out at 66, with her rise at 63. And she's thrown about 500 innings since February so her arm is more likely to be worn down than extra-lively.

it is great to have speed, but speed does not make ONE a great pitcher.

ESPN adds 10% to all stats of games and events that they broadcast.
