I can’t believe Ross Bjork and Ole Miss are taking any chances with additional NCAA sanctions or investigations. You can be rest assured the NCAA will get wind of everything that is going on with the softball program..... Just a matter of time....

Lady Rebs start 3-1 on the season, only loss to Ohio State. Nice to see pitching start strong, thought that could be a weak point this year. Smith comes back next weekend.

Guess we’ll see how many wins it takes for smith to keep his job this season after a strange suspension.

Will Smith be back next week?

Press release indicated a 5 game suspension and the Rebels only played 4 in FL. Smith might miss the first game in CA.

Pitching was decent for OM in FL. Hitting was weak below .175 vs UCF, MN and Ohio State. Team will not win a bunch in SEC with averages that Low.

They had a 5th game scheduled that was cancelled . I would guess the suspension is over .

It shouldn’t matter if one was canceled, the ‘punishment’ was 5 games not 3 days, correct?

I never saw the press release . Only read newspaper accounts of it . My impression was the suspension was for the opening weekend .

There was something released on twitter that said the suspension was only for opening weekend. He'll be back with the team for their next game.

Pitching was much better this weekend than I expected it to be. Hitting continues to be a struggle for them, although they opened it up a bit in the last game they played. They faced some decent pitching with Minnesota and Ohio State. If the pitching stays strong and the hitting improves a bit, they might have a good year.

George Mason is a team that was not good. Not D1 level.

I guess you have to have the cupcake games to pad the stats. Looking at the OM SB site they went 12/70 in the first 3 games.

Gonna be a long season in Oxford.

Lol. I hate to point this out to you, but many of the teams that the SEC played this weekend would be considered "cupcakes." At least 2 of the teams OM played were in the top 25.

Top 25 based on what ? Last year’s team ?

How many games does OM win this season hitting .171 with only 2-4 hits per game.

Many other SEC teams did play cupcakes and they beat them down quickly. OM took 6 innings to put 8 on George Mason.

Got to hit to win.

Based on whatever the rankings that came out last week were based on. I'm not the expert there.

And I said the hitting needed to improve for them to have a good year. However, if the pitching stays strong, 3-4 runs will win you some games.

And if we're going to get specific, OleMiss only played 5 against George Mason.

The GM game should have been over in 3 innings. The GM team had an RPI last season of 213 and was beaten 3 times in FL with an overall score of 0-22.

Ok let’s get specific. Looking at OM website:

OM vs Ohio State OM had only 3 hits. Finney 1/3, Alvarez 1/3 and Mena 1/3 The 6 other batters went 0-16.

OM vs MN- OM had 3 hits again with Becker 1/3, Horton 1/3 and Latham 1/2. The other batters went
0-13.

That production is not good enough to win anything. A catcher and majority of the infield hitting below .200 with some having an average of .000 is not acceptable. No team OM played last weekend is SEC quality. It looks like Roth did not play but I don’t know what she can add as her batting average was very weak last season. Offensively she will probably be more of the same.

OM pitching will have to be lights out to win any SEC games this season. Hitters don’t magically get better overnight. You can’t have a team full of players that can’t hit and expect to win. Smith is going to have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to win this year. All athletes are not created equal. That is life, some kids can hit any level pitching and some just can’t. Perhaps Smith needs a new hitting coach. I am sure all of these kids could hit at some point in their life. They normally look at strikes and strike out on balls out of the zone.

Perhaps the hitters will show up next weekend in CA. The team will probably face some weaker teams to pad the batting average and then get hammered by UCLA and any other good team they face.

Going to be a long SEC season for the rebels. No way around it.

Lady Rebs 2-0 on the day vs UC riverside and cal poly. Combined for 17 hits and 16 runs. Hope it carries over to tomorrow.

Two games cancelled yesterday and one in Florida last weekend. Maybe they’ll pick up a few extra midweek games. Might need the wins come SEC time

Are the stats correct on the OM SB site. I see they won 2 games against Sam Houston and and lost a game against Tulsa and both games against Texas.

The stats page show

The starting catcher is 4 for 31 which is a .129 average.

The starting SS is 0 for 20 which is a .000

The starting 2nd baseman is 4 for 26 which is a .154

It is going to be hard to win games with this kind of production in the lineup every game. What is going on in Oxford ?

I started following the team when they started winning with Katelin Lee. Seems like it has been downhill for a couple years now.

Looks like the rebels will be playing in Oxford next weekend. They better have some cupcakes on the way because the stats shore need some padding before they open SEC play.

Softballfan15 - I read some posts from Ole Miss fans on their 247Sports page plus a few here and it seems like the narrative has been “well Smith may be a homophobe and/or blatantly broke NCAA rules regarding visits during a dead period, but he’s a helluva coach so we’re all in and behind him.

But the pitiful stats you posted are all about the actual results achieved or not achieved on the field in the games. It’s hard to figure out what Coach Smith is doing well these days.

That may be what they fans are saying, but not at all what the players are saying.  Remember the saying "girls have to feel good to win". This team does not feel good and Clearly it is effecting their performance.

He isn't doing much except possibly bringing the NCAA officials back to campus if they get wind of his shenanigans.....

Ross would have Smith on the first bus out of town if NCAA rolled back into Oxford over Softball.

Ole Miss's  very modest expectations for softball will protect Smith, for now.

imo he is gone after this year, by choice or by force. He’s stepped on to many people and his reputation is souring fast. If the AD leaves first, Smith has a greater chance to make it to next year.

All Ole Miss money goes to football, basketball and baseball. They couldn’t care less about softball. As long as they stay above .500 and make a regional every year or so, admin is happy. They’ve got a decent complex but I would say it’s probably a nice mid-major stadium. It doesn’t even compare to other SEC stadiums. Softball just isn’t important to them like some of the other SEC schools, probably because they’ve always been so bad.

As far as the team this year, obviously their offense is weak,no argument there. I will say that their losses aren’t that bad, except maybe Tulsa. I think they’re 8-6. 1 loss to UCLA. 2 losses to Texas (1 they were close to winning), a loss to Boise State and Ohio State which are both receiving votes.

They lost their 3rd baseman for a few weeks, so they’ve got someone new playing there who’s made a bunch of errors but her bat keeps her there. The shortstop is a stud defensively so she’s gonna stay there I imagine no matter how bad she is at the plate. They’ve really only had a few “cupcake” games. The rest have been decent teams. Also, they still haven’t played a game at home.

It’ll be interesting to watch what they do this year. Hopefully they can find some people to help them get a little more consistent at the plate. The only thing really keeping them in games is their pitching, I thought they’d have a big drop off when Lee left, but Finnney and the JC transfer have been doing pretty well for them.

I think OM will be fine. Really will not know until the SEC starts. They definitely need to stay healthy.

I guess they got there cupcake game today. Offense woke up and they won 18 to 3.

Just saw the Massey links on another thread. They have Ole Miss strength of schedule at 13. That’s pretty high compared to the rest of the SEC.

Rebels smash Arkansas today. Lots of extra base hits and great pitching. Fun to watch. The Jacobson girl can pitch. First shut out of the season for the Hogs.

If she just had the strength to get through a full game, I’d be a lot happier. She’s good but that 5th inning hits her hard. Granted she ain’t got much help.
