---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because Janie Reed was a new coaching addition to the team (and because Janie is a GREAT slap hitter)... I saw her as a likely culprit in coming up with this new approach for Mendes in 2018. But it could have come from J.T... or PG... or even Nicole herself. Or maybe there was never any such thought process by any of them... But it seems to me that something along those lines... probably happened. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ She seemed to lose the confidence she had developed as a freshman... and the belief in herself and her ability to dominate a pitch (and a pitcher). I have this feeling that Nicole... never really fully believed in this new pro-slapper idea - and as it never really paid off... she fell a bit deeper and deeper into a funk as the season developed. PG finally sat her out a few games, just before the post season ... and after that - Mendes came back with some new fire in her belly. She put up a .385 BA, .429 OBP, .500 SLG and .929 OPS in the post season. This was a nice improvement over what she had done in 2018... but was still well below her 2017 level. I am looking forward to seeing what sort of numbers Nicole will put on the board in 2019. I hope she gets back to her 2017 style of play... and even improves upon those numbers (especially in power). <She seemed to lose the confidence she had developed as a freshman... and the belief in herself and her ability to dominate a pitch (and a pitcher). It came from JTG as did all the changes and assignments. Not knowing what exactly was said or how, I learned that the result of a meeting towards the end of the regular season was NM returned to her original style. Many of us are with you in looking forward to seeing what sort of numbers Nicole will put on the board in 2019. She is also the only left handed pitcher on staff in 2019. Hopefully Jennifer Rocha will give her more than a passing look. That's about all she received from Missy (who already had two superb lefties on staff).

I have no idea what you're talking about. Henry mentioned Janie Reed in his first post on this topic. Subsequent posters blamed J.T. Gasso as being the person responsible for wrecking Mendes' swing. I then opined that maybe it was the slap hitter, Reed, who changed Nicole's approach at the plate. I never once mentioned, or even thought about Takeda.

Reed is Takeda.

I don't know who did it: Reed, Takeda, JT, Lombardi, or Patty. I disapprove. I think someone got into Patty's head with an idea, and we might well have had three in a row if we hadn't had it. Something changed the hitters, and it didn't work.

Great news for OU Kelani Rickets is now a volunteer coach to help Rocha. Also Delanie Gourley from Florida is now our graduate assistant. Your not going to find a better staff ever.

Any else see Brooke Vestal (sp?) pitch first two innings in the All American HS game? Thoughts? I think she looked good, hoping Rocha can get the best out of her.

Ye, 4 hits, 2 runs, loaded bases both innings, too many walks. Hit batter. All in 2 innings. And 'book' on her is throws mid to upper 60s? Not even close. If you can't get excited & throw harder for a Nationally televised game like this...? Those 2 innings would translate to a double digit ERA. To answer your question not a very good 2 inning snapshot. We all know her upside AND working with Rocha she's got every chance to be successful. MY observation only.

According to Sooner Times message board, new OU catcher will be Berkley Faulkner, who played at Okie State out of high school, left that program and is transferring to Oklahoma after not playing for a couple of seasons. Can't vouch for the info and I know nothing about the player.

I have only heard about their junior catcher coming in: This is from Calhi:Kinzie Hansen (Norco) Jr. Our State Junior of the Year (and also State Freshman of the Year for 2016 and State Sophomore of the Year for last season) missed six games with an injury, but did more than enough to keep her perch as the most highly regarded player for her class. Despite not being a pitcher, Hansen also looms as a national player of the year candidate for next season. She was Norco’s leading hitter in helping the Cougars win the CIF Southern Section Division I title and go 28-3 with a final No. 2 state and national ranking. Hansen, committed to Oklahoma, had 44 hits for a .571 batting average with 35 RBI and was on-base at nearly a .700 pace. She also already has been picked as the CIFSS D1 Player of the Year and Riverside Press-Enterprise Player of the Year.

If she didn't play at Oklahoma St, what makes her think OU will be easier to get in the game?

janie: did someone say that it would be easy for this young lady to break into Oklahoma's starting lineup? Or even that she would ever play at all? Just curious.

Well, yes, I suppose so. But I think what's important here is that Patty seems to want her to join the team. Don't know whether she (PG) expects her to contribute, or if she just believes another back-up is needed. I personally know little or nothing about this young lady.

I think there will be 2-3 options including Berkley Faulkner to fill the catcher position. It’ll be equally as difficult for all of them. The best will get the spot, that simple. Patty wanted a stud transfer, but no $ was avail unless they were a Senior this year. I’m sure we’ll do fine regardless.

<< According to Sooner Times message board, new OU catcher will be Berkley Faulkner, who played at Okie State out of high school, left that program and is transferring to Oklahoma after not playing for a couple of seasons. Can't vouch for the info and I know nothing about the player. >> (RahOKU) Berkley Faulkner was recruited by former Oklahoma State coach, Rich Wieligman - but he was fired after a couple of losing seasons... so Faulkner came into her freshman season with a coach who hadn't recruited her. She played in 26 games (started 23) and did not hit very well. AB H 2B HR BB SO R RBI BA OBP SLG OPS 53 9 2 2 13 13 10 10 .170 .338 .321 .559 They used four different catchers that season - and while Berkley may have been the best defensively - none of them were all that good. She had 6 passed balls, 3 errors, 9 assists and threw out 5 of 18 base stealers (which was the best % on the team). The highlight of her NCAA softball career was probably when she hit a HR off Paige Parker in the second inning... to give Oklahoma State a 1-0 lead over Oklahoma on March, 30th, 2016. The Sooners came back to win the game 10-2 in five innings. As far as I can tell - she has not played NCAA softball since her 2016 freshman season. It would be quite a come back story... if she somehow manages to become Oklahoma's starting catcher.

So does she have 3 years of eligibility left? Or just 2? I believe you can take 5 years to play 4 seasons, right?

Thanks for providing that brief history, Henry. With Paige in the circle, an opponent earned whatever glory they achieved…and it usually lasted just briefly.

Faulkner will be a good addition to help with a position of need, she is more than capable defensively and that is always what seems to be at the forefront in that position. She has been a student at OU since she left OSU, I wouldn’t hold her time at OSU against her, from what I hear it was a less than ideal situation.
