Cal Softball Inks Three Recruits the 2009-10 Season

Nov. 12, 2008

BERKELEY - Three California high school standouts - pitcher Jolene Henderson, infielder Jordan Wallace and catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt - have signed National Letters of Intent to join the University of California softball program for the 2009-10 season, Golden Bears head coach Diane Ninemire announced Wednesday.

"I feel that this is a really strong class," said Ninemire. "All three are very accomplished players on the field and in the classroom. They are all very strong academically. Jolene is one of the top pitching prospects in the country and she has led her team to the top of the national rankings. She is the type of pitcher we need in our program. We are also glad to have her teammate, Lindsey, who has been catching Jolene for four straight years. We're fortunate to have a catcher of her caliber. She is going to provide the necessary leadership behind the plate with her catching skills and will bring a big bat to the lineup. And Jordan is a big-time power hitter with great range. She is just a tremendous athlete who can provide a lot of depth to this team."

Henderson, from Sheldon High School in Sacramento, has a bevy of high school accolades on her resume, including an ESPN/Under Armor All-American nod, and first-team all-league and All-Metro honors in 2008. She garnered Player of the Year honors from the Sacramento Bee and CalHi Sports in 2007 when she earned first-team all-league and All-Metro honors, as well. Henderson registered a 0.17 ERA in 2006, a 0.47 in 2007 and a 0.41 in 2008. She also posted a .400 batting average in 2008.

Henerson helped Sheldon to a pair of Sac-Juaquin Section championships in 2007 and 2008, and won a national title with her ASA club team, the Lady Magic, in 2008.

"I wanted to play at a Pac-10 school with great coaches and great teammates," said Henderson. "Cal also gives me the chance at a great education."

A product of Fairfield, Wallace was a multiple all-league performer and was selected as the MVP of the Monticello Empire League in 2007. She was also co-MVP in 2006. Wallace earned all-state honors twice, including a first-team nod for the 2008 season when she hit a league-leading .461 with six home runs, 23 RBIs and 36 runs scored after batting .477 and hitting nine homers as a sophomore. She was a member of the Sorcerer's 18 Gold (ASA), and helped her team to a 13th-place finish at the 2008 Nationals. Wallace also earned several accolades in volleyball, including all-league honors for the Fairfield Falcons. Her father, Melvin, is a former player with the San Diego Chargers.

"I chose Berkeley because I am a California girl, and I look great in blue and gold," said Wallace.

Ziegenhirt, a teammate of Henderson's at Sheldon, is also a highly decorated athlete. She earned All-America honors from ESPN/Under Armor, EA Sports and the NFCA in 2008. Ziegenhirt also collected first-team all-league, district and state honors in 2008 and was selected as the 2007 Delta River League Player of the Year. Last season, Ziegenhirt produced a .446 batting average, with 47 RBI, 14 doubles and six home runs. Sheldon was ranked as high as No. 3 in the country in 2007 and reached No. 1 in the national rankings last season, before ending the season ranked fourth. Ziegenhirt was also on the same Lady Magic ASA team as Henderson that captured the national title. Her mother, Laura, played softball at Pacific from 1980-83.

"I chose California because I knew the rigorous academics would challenge me to become a better student," said Ziegenhirt. "The Cal coaching staff will also challenge me to step up my game and make me a better player."

The Bears begin their 2009 regular season in February.

And congrats to the Cal WBB... Number ONE class in the nation GO BEARS!!

Five Panthers reach a milestone

Klein Oak senior softball players Megan May, left, and Ashleigh Jones, signed their National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning at the school along with teammates Bree Brown, Brittany Walker and Jill Bussell. May shows the Texas A&M "Gig 'Em Aggies" hand sign while Jones does the Houston "Cougar Paw" for their respective future schools. The five Oak seniors that signed with Division I programs was a first for the program.

They sat, side by side with smiles on their faces, ready for a milestone event that would chart their future path.

Five Klein Oak High senior softball players each signed their national letter of intent to play Division I softball Wednesday morning at the school.

“I’ve been here 14 years, and we’ve never had a group like this,” Klein Oak athletic coordinator David Smith said. “This is very exciting. We’re very lucky to have these ladies compete for Klein Oak High School. We have a great softball program.”

Three of the players – center fielder Ashleigh Jones (Houston), catcher Megan May (Texas A&M) and first baseman Jill Bussell (Stephen F. Austin) – are staying in the Lone Star State while pitcher Bree Brown (DePaul) and shortstop Brittany Walker (Florida) will compete at universities outside the region.

“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to be able to work with them and teach them a little bit,” Panthers softball coach Javier Vela said.

Bussell said it was special to sign alongside her longtime teammates and friends.

“It means the world to me, I’ve grown up with them,” Bussell said.

Vela guided Klein Oak to the district championship last season and to the regional semifinals, where they lost, 1-0, to eventual Class 5A champion Garland.

Brown said she’s looking forward to making another playoff run this spring.

“We’ll perform well and make it far,” Brown said. “It’s our last year – we’ve got to.”

Brown was recruited to DePaul by Blue Demons assistant coach Cat Osterman, a two-time Olympic medalist who was the nation’s top pitcher at both Cy Springs High and the University of Texas.

“It was really neat getting recruited by one of the gold medalists,” Brown said. “I think it’ll be good, it’ll definitely help me out a lot.”

Walker, who plays shortstop for the Panthers, plans on playing center fielder for Florida; that’s the position she plays for her club team.

She chose Florida, “Because it is amazing, that just covers it.”

May picked A&M for its academics and looks forward to playing for the defending NCAA World Series runner-up.

“I’ve loved A&M since I was 10, and they’re the top petroleum engineering school; that’s what I want to do,” May said.

Jones wanted to play for a competitive program that’s close to home.

“I love the atmosphere, people and facilities, and their softball program is good,” Jones said. “I like it because if I ever need anything, my family is right there.”

Southeast Georgia has never been a hot bed for recruiting (population and length of time playing, etc), but mark down this signing period as the best ever.  More girls signed during this signing period than in the 10 year history of the sport in our area (only started emphasizing fastpitch in 1999).  Way to go girls, these girls are helping to pave the way for years to come!

Ty,

As you know Kali Carswell played for Atl. Vipers (Vallery) and before that she played for her dad that coached for East Cobb and she's from the Atl. area. Hardly South Ga. And Katherine Dotson played for Atl. Vipers Gold ( Seamon)

Thanks for pointing that out.  I did make a correction to the information I posted.

Obviously you are a Atl Viper person and it was not intended as a slight towards that organization.  All information was posted in the present and future and not intended to give background bio information or take away from who they had played for in the past.  This was just so people who might want to see these girls would know where to find them next spring and summer.

Had you been a little more up on things, you would have noticed that NONE of the information reflected past teams and all was present and future.  Six out of the eleven that were reported in that post played on different teams this past summer than what they are playing on now, not just the two you pointed out.  So I was not taking any jab at the teams they played on last summer, just providing information for the future, since signing day is about their future.

The only misjustice I did in the original post and I have corrected it, was listing the two that do not reside, live, play high school ball and are products of the Southeast Georgia area that was the center of my post. I seperated them. I am not sure why it would bother you that girls from this area get a little publicity.  It is just about them, nothing else.

Ty

UMass Softball Signs Three To NLI During Early Signing

Click here to find out more!

Nov. 14, 2008

Amherst, Mass. - University of Massachusetts softball coach Elaine Sortino announced the signing of three players to the National Letter of Intent today. The new signees are outfielder Cyndil Matthew (Westfield, N.J.), infielder/outfielder Christine Della Vecchia (Stratford, Conn.), and shortstop/third basemen Teea Rogers (Eugene, Ore.).

Third basemen Cyndil Matthew hit .625 for Westfield High School as a junior, sending seven balls out of the park and stealing 16 bases.

"Cyndil Matthew is going to bring great speed and power to our lineup as an offensive player," Sortino said. "I think she has dimensional talents as a defensive player. She can play in the infield or the outfield."

Versatile infielder/outfielder Christine Della Vecchia from Stratford, Conn. will add depth to the UMass roster.

"Christine Della Vecchia is very strong from the left side. She works very hard at the game and is a student of the game," said Coach Sortino. "I believe she will be a great addition to UMass softball as well."

First Team All Southwest Conference shortstop Teea Rogers from Eugene, Ore. will add power to the UMass softball team and gives Coach Sortino options regarding the left side.

"Teea Rogers is a versatile infielder. She can play shortstop or third base," Sortino said. "She is a powerful hitter with a great eye at the plate and I am looking for her to have a bright future."

Although the class is small, Sortino believes these players can have an almost immediate impact on the UMass softball team.

The 2008 UMass softball team went 42-13 overall and was perfect in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutewomen captured their 20th Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the 14th consecutive and 18th overall NCAA Tournament appearance, hosting the NCAA Regional for the third straight season.

I imagine the HS with 5 signers must be similar to the AAU BAseball team we had in Tidewater with Davis Wright (Mets), Ryan Zimmmerman (Washington Nats), BJ Upton (Rays) and Michael Cuddyer (Twins).
