-On her visit to LSU the weekend of the Miss. State game,  I heard LSU signed a 2010 pitcher from Ill. named Kaley Coonce. As an 8TH grader, she clocked consistently 68 mph, and even topped out at 70mph as a freshmen. She already pitches for an ASA Gold team, and of course, is dominating.

- LSU got another  big verbal from a girl named Tammy Wray. Already named an All-American, she chose LSU over the Florida Gators.  She's also a good soccer player

-Simone Heyward of Rosemont High in Sacramento, Calif. She's a slap-hitter, and according to a few sites she is VERY FAST. She batted .614 as a SOPHOMORE

-LSU's 4th verbal commit is Dillon Supak of LaGrange, Texas. All I could find was that she was a shortstop. I'll keep digging for something.

Tigerbait - With Fico in 2009 and Koonce in 2010, LSU is in great shape for pitching.

I have seen Coonce pitch, she tops out at around 64. She doesn't throw as hard as Fowler, Ricketts, and Henderson. Fowler is the fastest I've seen at 72 MPH.

OklaFan - 64 MPH is plenty fast enough if she can change speeds and bend the ball to spots. Besides, I don't ever believe the exact recording of a single pitch as the speed of a pitcher. Fowler throws very hard - and is adept at pitching.

Coonce was the 18U gold's Southern Force pitcher last year. She was wild, and very nervous. On deck she throws very fast. I would say 66, but in the game she slows down to just over 60 trying to control the ball and its movement. She has a very nervous parent too that compounds the problem. She took the 16U Southern Force team to a high finish but didnt qualify her gold team last year and they had a good hitting team. She could have potential. I wish some parents would understand how much their nervous or calm demeanor can affect their child. I wish her luck, I do think she is good. Gerry, her last year's travel coach really believes she is one of the best pitchers in her class.

I once recommended a pitcher to a top notch school with the caveat that her father was as bad a softball father-coach as I'd seen. He was nasty to his daughter when she was pitching, and had long ago sent her the message that she couldn't do it without him. Of course the reverse was true. We thought it would work because the university was far from her home, and to a degree it did. I asked the coach in the kid's junior year how she was doing, and the coach replied, "Always the same, always the same. She pitches like an All America until her father arrives and stays for too many days. When he's here she goes to pieces. When she hears his voice telling her what to do, that's only half as bad as waiting to hear that voice telling her what to do. I've talked with him, but nothing registers, and he insists that he knows her better than anyone".
These type parents don't realize the "real" messages they are sending to their kids. The kids have to be super strong individuals to overcome.

JG-I see a parent like this at every game I go to . They usually stand by themselves & the mom sits in stands or lawn chair. If daughter doesn't play well ,it is probably because the coach made changes in her swing or throwing motion ,etc.If he only really knew.

My daughter is a star 1B for the Arkansas Razorbacks. She is from Edmond, Oklahoma. I have been hard on her, and have been consistently criticize by others for being too hard on her. Yet, she continues to be an amazing player for the Razorbacks. Sometimes, you have to be hard on them JG.

Okie - Depends what you mean by "hard". The parents we are talking about are "demeaning" and create lack of confidence. As a coach I always "pushed" my charges to determine their limits with them, but as I told them, "I'll love all of you and even like some of you, but I'll always be positive and fair". I see that as far different from robbing a kid of her dignity.

Oklahoma Fan - No problem, as long as you don't gain a first baseman and lose a daughter.

Tough to be a star on a sub .500 team and only one hitter over .300.  18 to 23 year old women are pushed by their own desires and aspirations.  Dad and Mom, put on the t-shirt and be a cheerleader.

D1 College Softball, to some extent, humbles every player. The game is great because it is so hard. Extending greatness before any player sets foot on campus is a bad bet.  Curiosity is fine.  Pre-mature ovations are usually from those with little experience in the college game.

Please explain why we're all so off on Coonce? Everything I could find "googling" resulted in good reads.
