Los Angeles, Calif. --
For the third consecutive week, senior shortstop Sam Fischer has earned Coastal Division PCSC Player of the Week honors. Fischer had another solid weekend of hitting while the Lions traveled to Boca Raton to play in the Hilton Suites “Strike Out Cancer” Tournament.
Fischer (Simi Valley, Calif.) added two more home runs onto her LMU Career all-time record this past weekend, putting her at 50 career homeruns. Fischer now joins the ranks of 79 other NCAA D1 softball players with 50+ career home runs.
She went 10 for 17 at the plate, batting .588 and slugging .611. Fischer has eight home runs and eight doubles in the team’s first fifteen games. She is well on her way to surpassing her 2011 statistics of 16 doubles and 15 home runs.
Driving in 10 RBIs on the weekend, Fischer was a key component to the Lions 2-3 weekend in Florida, a tournament known for its tough competition. Fischer went four for four in their 9-0 blowout of Florida A&M with four RBIs.
Fischer’s reaction to the news was exciting to say the least, “I am just in the zone. I feel completely relaxed and am just trying to hit the ball hard. I still can't believe how I'm doing but the best feeling is knowing I can help my team win and that's all I want... I just want to win and that's my focus.”
The Lions are heading into a seven game weekend where they play a double header against Bethune Cookman on Wednesday, then head to Clearwater, Florida to compete in the USF Under Armour Invitational starting Friday. Fischer has a positive outlook on the weekend as she notes, “I think when with the next 7 games coming up we should be able to get on a roll and play the way we are capable of playing. It's looking good for us right now.”
