NAME YOUR SCHOOL'S ALL STAR SQUAD (must have played in the last 5 years)

Nine current and former members of the Oklahoma softball program have been invited to participate in the 2018 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.

Former Sooners Lauren Chamberlain, Shelby Pendley and Keilani Ricketts and current student-athletes Caleigh Clifton, Shay Knighten, Paige Parker, Paige Lowary, Nicole Mendes and Sydney Romero all received an invite to take part in the camp, which takes place Jan. 1-5, 2018 at Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

The 9 Sooners listed gave me the thought - that this has the makings of a pretty good school all star team. I will add a few others to make my version of the Oklahoma All Star squad.

Here are a few guidelines to follow.
1. Only recent players are under consideration. A player must have played within the last 5 seasons. They are eligible if they played on your school's team during during the 2013 season or later.

2. List a starting lineup - and a 15 player roster.

3. A player must have played games at the position for which you list them.

Here is my version of the Oklahoma team:

The stats listed are for their career at your school.

CF - Nicole Mendes - (BA .408, OBP .449, SLG .598, OPS 1.047)
2B - Caleigh Clifton - (BA .354, OBP .533, SLG .563, OPS 1.096)
1B - Lauren Chamberlain - (BA .395, OBP .556, SLG .960, OPS 1.516)
SS - Shelby Pendley - (BA .384, OBP .493, SLG .832, OPS 1.325)
P - Keilani Ricketts - (BA .334, OBP .502, SLG .666, OPS 1.168)
C - Jessica Shults - (BA .348, OBP .455, SLG .683, OPS 1.138)
RF - Erin Miller - (BA .364, OBP .447, SLG .588, OPS 1.035)
LF - Kady Self - (BA .369, OBP .456, SLG .585, OPS 1.041)
3B - Georgia Casey - (BA .342, OBP .457, SLG .595, OPS 1.052)

SP - Keilani Ricketts - (IP 1021.0, ERA 1.23, FB/7 2.62, SO/7 10.50, OpBA .162)

P - Paige Parker - (IP 679.2, ERA 1.58, FB/7 2.05, SO/7 7.78, OpBA .182)
P - Paige Lowary - (IP 146.2, ERA 1.53, FB/7 2.00, SO/7 5.82, OpBA .163)
P - Michelle Gascoigne (IP 378.0, ERA 1.65, FB/7 1.76, SO/7 9.39, OpBA .189)
1B/DH - Shay Knighten - (BA .376, OBP .441, SLG .619, OPS 1.060)
OF - Nicole Pendley - (BA .333, OBP .401, SLG .563, OPS .964)
IF/3B - Sydney Romero - (BA . 342, OBP .388, SLG .570, OPS .958)

*Georgia Casey played primarily second base for Oklahoma, but also played SS & 3B.

Knighten would DH vs. lefty pitchers - Ricketts would DH vs. righty pitchers.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is my 15 player roster: the 9 starters plus 3 other pitchers and a 1B/DH (S. Knighten), a back up OF (N. Pendley) and a back up IF (S. Romero).

If we made it a rule that the players have to play a position at which they played a full season... then Nicole Pendley would move into CF, Nicole Mendes would move into RF - and Sydney Romero would move into 3B.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

List your favorite school's all star squad.

Does any school have a better lineup (or roster) than Oklahoma's..?

-------------------------------------------------------------

**Shelby Pendley's stat line is for her entire NCAA career. I haven't taken the time to drop out her first season when she was with Arizona.

It's interesting that you mention All-Star squad and then specify the last 5 years. Doesn't sound like an all star squad to me. How about we name an All-Star squad just from your team 7 years ago. [biggrin]

Feel free to name an All Time All Star squad from your favorite team... if you want.

And... feel free to name an All Star squad from your more recent teams (as I have done) if you want.
Oklahoma has had some great players in recent times... and it makes for quite a recent player all star squad.

Why not compose an Oklahoma all star squad
starting with 1995 when Gasso became HC.

Why not name all star squads for all the years a team has played (an All Time All Star squad) as CajunAmos seemed to prefer..?

Any suggestion could be done...

My interest was stimulated by the recent invitees list...
and I was taken by how many great players Oklahoma has had in recent times -
and that was the basis for the guidelines I listed.

But... anyone can feel free to make any type of all star squad they would like.

I won't stop you from doing so.
Feel free to play along with my suggested guidelines...
or do whatever you like.

Michelle Moultrie (2012) just missed the cutoff for this All-Star list, but she'd surely be on it otherwise. She and Val Arioto are the current longest tenured members of Team USA and will likely be on the team again this summer.

Perplexed how Haeger and Rogers did not at least receive an invite.

I need a 7 game series of Oklahoma All-Stars vs Florida All-Stars ASAP. For charity, of course.

Oklahoma had obviously better stats during that time, and nothing to take away from players like Chamberlain, but I'd be curious to see the top 10 Big 12 pitchers from 2013-2017 that didn't have OU on their chest (because they didn't play them).

SEC, outside of Florida, looked like this in no particular order:

  1. Jackie Traina
  2. Kelsey Nunley
  3. Alexis Osorio
  4. Chelsea Wilkinson
  5. Ellen Renfroe
  6. Carley Hoover
  7. Sydney Littlejohn
  8. Allie Walljasper
  9. Alison Owen
  10. Paige Lowary ([rofl])

Pitched 1 year (2013): Chelsea Thomas, Rachele Fico, Ivy Renfroe, Mel Dumezich

Thanks for sharing your excellent Florida Gators lineup and roster.
I would have no problem with you adding Michelle Moultrie.
Any player who is a current member of Team USA deserves a spot.

I think they could put that on ESPN and do very well in the ratings.
I know I would be watching...
and I think most softball fans everywhere - would be watching as well.

They could put the money made towards hurricane relief - and California fire relief.

Hey Patty Gasso, Tim Walton and ESPN... let's get this ball rolling!

Hey, let's make it an All-Conference tournament using players from last 5 years:

All-Pac vs. All-B1G
All-SEC vs. All-B12
All-ACC vs. All-MWC
All-SunBelt vs. All-CAA

(I could totally get behind seeing Waldrop vs. Hyland)

Or maybe:

All-PAC vs. All-CAA
All-SEC vs. All-MWC
All-B12 vs. All-SunBelt
All-B1G vs. All-ACC

They are teammates on the Bandits,   only problem of getting that matchup would be the Big West is not included

Crap here I was trying to include MWC so I could get Libby Suggs, and forgot Poly wasn't in that same conference. Didn't realize til just now that BYU wasn't even in the MWC either.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I prefer your second set which avoids the B12 vs. the SEC in a first round match up.

I would enjoy seeing your player all star picks for any (or all) of those all conference teams.
