Frank offers: To my knowledge every college softball website has pitching stats. And in those stats, the "automated scorebook", are various category headings, including but not limited to IP, K, BB, ERA, WP, HBP and BK, etc. I believe BK stands for "balk".v There is no mention of BALK in any softball rulebook that I know of. IP is already used for "innings pitched" What to do?

Effective April 1st, 2008, scorekeepers will be using a new acronym for illegal pitches. "Circle Associated Transgression" will be the term and the category will be recorded in a ninth column now referred to as a:

Another way to view successes vs failure as pertaining to the scoreboard. There is nothing wrong with "getting beat" for you have given your all and the opposition prevailed this time. "Losing" however is a failure to prepare and perform adequately to secure victory.

Softballfanatic - I always coached my kids to understand the two games, the scoreboard one for the fans, and the interior game for the players, and that the latter was always more important than the former, but winning in both areas simultaneously is really great.

Always words of wisdom Frank,  If your knees were as good as your mind you would still be throwing those no hitters, Someone told me that your methods were underhanded  (pitching that is)

Did anyone mention that we score "runs" in softball, not "points"?

DietPepsi,

When the men's tennis team would come watch my daughter's softball team, they would scream madly, "That's it, score more points!" Their enthusiasm was as wildly off-target as their varied accents. Quite a multi-cutural squad.

Bill - Interesting, but even more intriguing would be the etymology of "run" and "point" as they apply to games. Why not call a run scored as a "touch"? Then, of course, is the application of "love" to tennis. And on and on -.

Why "run" versus "point" is easy. Cricket my good man. Those lazy limey batsmen only jaunt between two sets of sticks. Call it a run. We Yanks have to circle the four sides of a diamond to, as George put it, "come home."

"Innings" comes from cricket, as well. However, wicket is reserved for inept infielders in baseball rather than a target for bowlers.

And I do know the folklore behind why love means nothing in tennis, but not because I am l'oeuf tête, rather, it's my profession.

Okay Bill, I figured you were an egghead, but I want to be certain I understand you.  Is your profession love or tennis?

It's most certainly tennis. Wouldst it be other, a poorer man I'd be.

ten four - In addition to being an "egghead" supreme, wordsmith, and softball coach, Bill is a teaching tennis pro. Talented man, no ???? I still want to know why "love" means "nothing" in tennis.

Below is how I find the peg for second base:

(and the reason we don't see enough of Robo here at UCS because he's probably trying to disuade his students from answering questions in this manner)

Can someone (Bill Smith?) explain to me the rule pertaining to where exactly a base coach must be in relation to the coaching box? I don't own a rule book. Thank you.

Frank,

Here ya go:

1.26 Coaches’ Boxes

The area to which the two base coaches (one per box) are restricted before release of the pitch.

2.8 Coaches’ Boxes

Each coach’s box shall be marked by two lines. The first is a line 15 feet long drawn parallel to and 8 feet from the first- and third-base lines extended from the back edge of the bases toward home plate. The second is a line 3 feet long drawn perpendicular to the end of the 15-foot line closest to home plate. (My note: There is no third line, thus a coach may wander farther from home. Or so I've been told.)

Bill - Thank you very much. It's that "so I've been told" that creates the foggy interpretation of the rule - especially when a coach's safety is thrown into the equation.

In keeping with our instructional portion of this thread we will define the term,

Top Dressing

This is soil put on the infield dirt at the beginning of each new season to replace that which leaves on the ears of all those that have their ears to the ground listening for softball rumor and innuendo during the off-season.

It has been a while since we've had any additions to this category. Felt the need to define the term,

MID-MAJOR

I can't tell you what it is, but I can definitely tell you what it is not. It is not every other team in NCAA D-1 sports that isn't in a BCS conference. Stands to reason, that if the BCS is the top, mid-majors would be the middle and well, someone must be the bottom. Don't take magnifying glass to this Sherlock, rather look into the mirror.

Wiki's definition and discussion:

The question of, "Aren't the hands part of the bat?", came up again in the general forum. Thought I'd answer the question and document the rule here in our trusty, "Know Of What You Speak." thread.

Answer: No.

Now, on to my usual verbosity...

The bat is a bat. The player is every part a player, including uniform and hands. If the batter swings, it is a strike. If the batter doesn't swing and is hit by the pitch, they go to first. Rules are even more simple, having recently eliminated the need for the batter to avoid.

Yes, I know, Lisa Fernandez exclaimed that the hands are part of the bat while doing color commentary on a national broadcast in 2004 or 2005. She was wrong. (See below.)

11.16 Hit Batter (by Pitch)

11.16.1 A batter is awarded first base when a pitched ball neither swung

at nor called a strike touches any part of the batter’s person or clothing

while she is in the batter’s box, except as noted in 11.16.2 that follows.

EFFECT—The ball is dead. The batter is entitled to first base without liability

to be put out. Runner(s) may not advance unless forced.

Notes:

1. It does not matter if the ball strikes the ground before hitting the batter.

2. The batter’s hands are not considered part of the bat.

3. If a batter swings and the ball hits her hands which sends it into fair or

foul territory, the ball is dead and a strike is called on the batter. If it is strike

three, the batter is out.
