Wanabe and others - Hammer had a stroke (June 27 AM) and was rushed to a hospital where he was treated. At present he is recovering, and the most noticeable result of the stroke is that he is mixing up words from his several languages. He is currently recuperating at home and is "somewhat OK". He cannot go back to work yet. He hopes to be back on line when the results of his stroke subside. I wish him well and a quick recovery, and miss him.

I have had a sinking feeling about his absence and feared the worst.  I hope he is alright.

Frank, Thanks for the update. Your report conjured an image of Hammer voicing the varied dialects of a well-known movie.

Hammer, Glad to hear you'll be playing it again. As time goes by, looking forward to sharing a softball field. Take care.

Wow!   Absolutely Wow!

I've got an entirely new mind set after just having read this.  Makes all these threads/posts seem so meaningless.

Hey Hammer.....wish you the best and will have you in my thoughts tonight and in the coming days.  Dam It!  Get better.

Wow, this news hit me like a punch in the mouth.

I saw Sam only a couple of months ago and he had so much energy and enthusiasm it's hard to picture him laid up.   I will miss him while he doesn't post here and say prayers for a strong recovery.

LMUFan - When the stroke hit Hammer, he couldn't speak for two days, so I'm guessing that some rehab will be necessary. It will take time. He has an MRI scheduled to determine his condition currently. He did have a clot that moved to his brain and caused the stroke.

Just back from four days in sin city where my wife and I, (and several other couples), attended some longtime friend's 40th anniversary party.  During the drive across the desert on Thursday, I received a call from Hammer.  He sounded perfectly fine to me but I don't understand a word of Farsi.  Just kidding.  We spoke briefly and I was shocked to learn about his stroke.  Certainly, that must have been scary.  He said he went about a week where he couldn't talk but he sounded perfectly fine on Thursday.  He mentioned his only problem has been mixing up languages occasionally.  I hope he is continuing to improve and I will surely talk to him soon.

I talked with Sam via telephone yesterday and he seemed to be just fine with his talking. One thing he told me was that he is now thinking seriously of retirement since he got a "message". Smart man. He has an MRI coming up that will probably investigate the extent of damage caused by the stroke. Like everyone on UCS, I wish him a complete recovery and much happiness. Hammer said that he hoped to be back on line soon.
