Hutchins Agrees to Five-Year Contract Extension

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan and softball head coach Carol Hutchins have agreed to a contract extension that will keep her at the helm of the Wolverine program through at least the 2022 season, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced Wednesday (Oct. 4). The five-year contract provides for annual rollovers.

"I remain honored and humbled to be the head coach at Michigan," said Hutchins. "I am very appreciative to Warde [Manuel] and Bitsy [Ritt] for their hard work, leadership and continued faith in me and my staff. I have truly had a blessed career and consider myself the luckiest coach in America."

"We are delighted to announce that Hutch will finish her career here at Michigan," said Manuel. "She is a legend in softball coaching and a legend in Michigan's illustrious history. More importantly, she is a phenomenal person and leader of our student-athletes. I look forward to her leading our softball program for many, many years to come."

Hutchins, now in her 34th season as the Wolverines' head coach, is the winningest coach in NCAA softball history, with a career record of 1,527-491-5, and is the winningest coach -- male or female -- in Michigan Athletics history. A 2006 inductee to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Huchins has guided the Wolverines to an NCAA title (2005) and 19 Big Ten Conference titles since 1992.

Under Hutchins, the Wolverines have made 25 NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Women's College World Series in 12 of the last 23 seasons. In 2005, Michigan defeated UCLA to become the first program east of the Mississippi River to capture the NCAA championship.

She has earned 16 Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, nine NFCA Regional Coach of the Year awards and a pair of NFCA National Coach of the Year honors. In 2016, she was named the inaugural recipient of espnW's Pat Summitt Coaching Award.

The Wolverines have received 66 total All-America citations under Hutchins, including 22 first-team nods, while 16 have earned Academic All-America accolades. Michigan players have claimed 19 Big Ten Player of the Year awards, 14 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year awards, and 12 Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards during her coaching tenure. Wolverine players have accumulated 147 Academic All-Big Ten awards, 195 All-Big Ten citations and 134 All-Mideast or All-Great Lakes Region certificates.

Michigan informally kicked off its 41st season of intercollegiate play with a 4-0 record at the annual Traverse City College Tournament last weekend. The Wolverines will also play a fall home-and-home series against in-state rival Michigan State, traveling to East Lansing, Michigan, for a 4 p.m. game on Thursday (Oct. 5) and hosting the Spartans at 6 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Wilpon Softball Complex, home of Alumni Field.
