Roster: http://floridagators.com/roster.aspx?path=softball

Schedule: http://floridagators.com/schedule.aspx?path=softball&

Starting Lineup:

  1. Hannah Adams, 3B, Fr.
  2. Amanda Lorenz, LF, Jr.
  3. Kayli Kvistad, 1B, Sr.
  4. Janelle Wheaton, C, Sr.
  5. Nicole DeWitt, 2B, Sr.
  6. Aleshia Ocasio, DP/P, Sr.
  7. Sophia Reynoso, SS, RS-So.
  8. Danielle Romanello, RF, Fr.
  9. Alex Voss, CF, Jr.
Kelly Barnhill - RHP
Katie Chronister - LHP
Natalie Lugo - RHP

I think the biggest question mark is who will play CF. I think Voss gets the nod at the beginning of the season, but Adams takes over if Voss can't produce at the plate. We have more offensive options at 3B this season (Ocasio, Hoover*, Matthews) than at CF.

Don't see Ocasio playing 3rd however because she'll be pitching too much. If she's not the everyday DP or hitting for herself, then she'll be in RF.

Anyone know if Romanello can play RF? Want her bat in the lineup. She's listed as a UT/C and I doubt Walton hands out the UT tag to someone who can't play RF.

*Can she keep her bat alive at all in SEC play?

I would take UT to mean C and 1B

I am sure Ocasio will get a lot of time in RF

Why not just write C/1B as Wheaton is listed then?

But yes, Ocasio probably will. But who's there when she's pitching? Guess it could just be a defensive sub, but more than likely Voss will be subbing at CF.

The Fall games have had DeWitt at 3B, Adams at SS, and Reynoso at 2B.

Lol. Thank you my friend. I will attempt to be as objective as I can. But I certainly will leave everything towards the Gators. Haha. Hopefully not as bad as Joe Buck leaned towards the Astros.

Catcher Brook Clemens transferred to Florida Gulf Coast Univ.  With Danielle Romanello coming in this year and just a loaded roster, I think Brook knew she may not get much playing time...

I thought she would have transferred earlier. With Aubree as the everyday catcher, then janelle Wheaton taking over.

Based on Walton's interview that was just posted on this board and everyone's comments from Fall games, starting lineup looking like:

  1. Hannah Adams (Fr.), 2B
  2. Amanda Lorenz (Jr.), CF
  3. Kayli Kvistad (Sr.), 1B
  4. Janelle Wheaton (Sr.), C
  5. Nicole DeWitt (Sr.), 3B
  6. Danielle Romanello (Fr.), RF
  7. Aleshia Ocasio (Sr.), LF/P
  8. Sophia Reynoso (RS So.), SS
  9. Lily Mann (Jr.), DP/LF
This team has a lot fewer questions this year going into the season.

Replacing Gourley isn't possible. I expect pitching to take a slight dip. Batters will adjust to Barnhill a little. Hopefully Ocasio can get back to her AA form from her first 2 seasons (I'm sure she would've been AA last year if we needed the innings). Chronister and Lugo likely split time. They just need to be serviceable. I'd be satisfied with ERAs in the 1.80 - 2.30 range. I see Chronister being used as a closer/save specialist.

The offense looks bright with the addition of Romanello and Adams. There really isn't a weak spot in the lineup. The current #9 spot above allows for a flexible DP when Barnhill, Chronister and Lugo are pitching. Roberts, Hoover and Matthews (depending on redshirt) are all potential DP candidates that could add some pop to the middle of the lineup. Wouldn't mind another righty bat as well as it seems only 2 will be there consistently.

When Ocasio pitches, a serviceable LF will be required. I put Mann as my top choice due to her experience. I think she's earned her shot to hit and play defense more regularly. I also think her size and speed offer some versatility. Voss, Switzer, Sampson and Swertfager also all have the opportunity to fill in at LF. In fact, most of those aforementioned are likely more natural CFs than Lorenz. I'd expect Lorenz to shift to the LF spot whenever Ocasio is in the circle.

Go Gators!

OPS will be between .875 and .890 again

Two intimidators in KK and Lorenz.

We'll see about the frosh.

Pitchers will keep bowling to the blonde lefties.

Adams 2b
DeWitt 3b
Lorenz c.f.
KK 1st
Wheaton c
Roberts DP
Ocasio lf
Romanello/Hoover/Voss. (Whoever's hitting) rf
Reynoso ss
Barnhill P/Flex

This will be how it looks out the gate. I'd put the house up that it won't remain that way.

I agree with gators2014 that the pitching will take a slight dip. Barnhill will HAVE to pitch in every important game. Ocasio, while good, is a distant #2 and proven hittable if left in too long. After her, it's anybody's guess. If they can get Lugo up to speed enough to burn some innings through SEC play, it should help them a bunch into the NCAA.

That said. At the meetings this month illegal pitchers will be a major point of emphasis. Also, big changes are rumored to be coming to the SEC Umpiring ranks & how they are scheduled. Curious how Florida will respond if they are forced to deal with getting Barnhill legal & Walton can't get his cronies working his games?

I enjoyed the recent interview with Walton but thought it negligent he wasn't asked about the "800lb Gorilla" on the mound.

Interesting comments about illegal pitching. We'll see how things play out I guess.

Not too concerned however. The comments on Ocasio being hittable are incorrect. She still has a below .200 BAA in her career. 3rd team and 1st team AA pitcher in her fresh and soph campaigns. Her inning reduction last year probably hurt within the season because she just didnt have the reps to compete as well as she has in the past against teams. But it's not carrying over to this year. She'll be in the circle a ton and is an ace.

Chronister and Lugo are young, but they have one of the best coaches in the game to bring them up to speed.

When I said slight dip, I meant slight.
