SEC Schedule (in order)

Missouri
@ Carolina
Auburn
@ Arkansas
Georgia
@ Kentucky
Ole Miss
@ Tennessee
"Bye" Week

  • Auburn and Tennessee will be the toughest challenges.
  • Other than UT, that road schedule is ideal. Carolina will be scrappy.

Surprised at the CSUF record.  I'm guessing those are all rather old. I'm utterly floored at the Purdue record.  You'd have figured Walton would've rectified that by now.

Also, equally impressed that presumably that means you have a winning record vs. UCLA.

Lorenz is leading off and playing CF (which i dont agree with fyi)    Ocasio in LF.  Dewitt 2nd and Kvistad 3rd.

Me either. She's more of a clean up hitter IMO.
I just don't know who I would put in to replace her.

This is confirmed? This would mean McLean is in RF, which she can play great obviously, but seems to be more natural in CF than Lorenz.

Forgot about Kvistad being an option at 3rd. I remember thinking she could take over for Tofft before Fuller filled those shoes. Hoover's bat needs to be in the lineup though, unless I have too lofty expectations of her.

Ocasio is fine in left.

Lorenz as leadoff isn't the worst if McLean "leads off" at 9, but still think DeWitt should lead off to give us more early opportunities to score runs.

Lauren Chamberlain did pretty well for OU and herself hitting leadoff much of her career. The thinking was to get her as many ABs as possible per game.

So what's our thoughts on the pitching rotation?

Does...

  • Chronister redshirt or pick up some innings here and there?
  • Ocasio pitch less and focus on closing games more since she's hitting despite being arguably the team's best pitcher?
  • Barhnill start to live up to her potential, reduce wildness and vary speeds more?
  • Gourley keep up her ridiculous performance from last year and end her career in Rogers/Haeger style?

I don't see Brooke Clemens in your lineup...I can see her in the starting lineup with a year under her belt...

Ordered my USF Wilson DeMarini tix today. They are assigned seats this year, so if you want to go, check them out on TickeyMaster soon! All days pass was $20.

Walton more or less confirmed the majority of my depth chart thoughts on his most recent interview.

1B- Kvistad then Wheaton
2B- DeWitt
3B- Hoover then Ocasio
SS- Reynoso
C- Wheaton then Roberts then Clemons
LF- Lorenz
CF- McLean
RF- Herndon then Ocasio

This essentially guarantees Ocasio will always be in the lineup. When Ocasio isn't pitching, Hoover potentially DPs and Ocasio plays 3B, although I prefer for Hoover to just stay at 3B as it allows more flexibility with the DP spot since Hoover won't play OF.

Surprised, but happy, Herndon is getting another shot at consistent at bats early in the season. She did well her freshman year when she had a consistent spot in the lineup and would be nice to have more than 1 senior hitting.

Based off the above, opening day lineup could look like this:

1. DeWitt, 2B (Jr) - L
2. Lorenz, LF (So) - L
3. Wheaton, C (Jr) - R
4. Kvistad, 1B (Jr) - L
5. Ocasio, P (Jr) - L
6. Hoover, 3B (Fr) - R
7. Herndon, RF (Sr) - L
8. Reynoso, SS (R-Fr) - R
9. McLean, CF (Sr) - L

This lineup allows for a lot of flexibility with the DP, likely to hit for Herndon or Reynoso, to allow for more right-handed hitters and/or hitters with more power.

When Ocasio isn't pitching:

1. DeWitt, 2B (Jr) - L

2. Lorenz, LF (So) - L
3. Wheaton, C (Jr) - R
4. Kvistad, 1B (Jr) - L
5. Ocasio, 3B (Jr) - L
6. Hoover, DP (Fr) - R
7. Herndon, RF (Sr) - L
8. Reynoso, SS (R-Fr) - R
9. McLean, CF (Sr) - L

OR my preference:

1. DeWitt, 2B (Jr) - L
2. Lorenz, LF (So) - L
3. Wheaton, C (Jr) - R
4. Kvistad, 1B (Jr) - L
5. Ocasio, RF (Jr) - L
6. Hoover, 3B (Fr) - R
7. DP SPOT
8. Reynoso, SS (R-Fr) - R
9. McLean, CF (Sr) - L

I think Lorenz will leadoff or bat 3rd.  In the two hole, she wouldn't be a threat to bunt.  Even if DeWitt is in the two hole and doesn't bunt much, the defense still has to be ready for it.  I would switch them.  Do you think Ocasio will get in enough reps to play 3B?  Can Reynoso hit?

I don't think Ocasio playing 3rd is the way to go, but Walton must see some potential there. She may be better at 3rd than Hoover, but it's more ideal to have Hoover play 3rd consistently. That's what I feel will happen.

Not sure about Reynoso's bat, but she really only has to hit when Ocasio isn't pitching - which granted will likely be frequently with the pitching depth.

You're right - Lorenz is likely in that 1 or 3 spot and probably more so 1. Since I don't see Wheaton, Kvistad or Lorenz ever bunting in the 2 spot, that would either mean DeWitt or Ocasio in the 2 spot.

I just feel Lorenz will show off more power this year. So I'd rather have her 3rd in the lineup which would put DeWitt and Ocasio 1st and 2nd? However, that's not likely because that would bump Wheaton and Kvistad down to 4 and 5. I don't see Kvistad that low and Walton really needs Wheaton to break up all those lefties.

So yeah, based off that:

1. Lorenz - L
2. DeWitt - L
3. Wheaton - R
4. Kvistad - L
5. Ocasio - L
6. Hoover - R
7. Herndon - L
8. Reynoso - R
9. McLean - L

Eh too many variables. Should be a fun start to the season.

Gators beat Illinois State 9-0 in five innings. Gourley gives up 1 hit and strikes out 12 for the win, Gators get 8 hits in 19 at bats including home runs by Wheaton and Herndon.

Just Saw Fla Gators first game of 2017.  Played in Tampa at USF against Illinois State. Gators won 8-0 and game called in the 5th.
-
I know it's the 1st game but I think this team is better than last year's team.  They have power everywhere, in the lineup, and power hitters sitting on the bench waiting to get in.
-
The team just looks intimidating out there. Hoover at third, looks huge and she got power. Jordan Roberts also has power and more power.
-
Herndon looked great tonight, homeruns, RBI's. Wheaton and Kvistad also looked good...
-
Gourley looked pretty sharp. Throwing about 68 mph.

She entered the lineup. Walton knows what he has in her. First game, good chance to see what others can do. Relax. She entered in the 3rd to pinch run, stole a base, played lf and flied out to cf in her only ab.

I think Walton knows what he's doing.  So she didn't start in the field in the 1st game of the year.  No biggie.  Has to see what he has in the youngsters.
