I'm new to this site, and have been happily reading and participating in great discussions about softball. For the past few days, I’ve been enjoying the banter, opinions, and perspectives expressed on a variety of topics. But then I stumbled upon the thread about sexual harassment in the Miscellaneous section, and was hit with some very disturbing language.
Actually, the discussion about this serious topic was quite good......until I read the post by BlueDog commenting on the issues of intimidation and the sexual orientation of the person doing the harassing. S/he said “Both are sinful...And, sin is evil....But, mankind does have free-will to decide their sexual preference.....To this, I would only tell them they are doing evil.”
Frankly, I am shocked that this type of language is permitted in these discussions. As a Lesbian, I certainly didn’t expect that by participating in the Ultimate Softball message board, I’d be confronted with someone calling me “evil” (Yes, yes, I get it….s/he didn’t call ME evil…just my lifestyle. Sorry, that hairsplitting makes no difference to me).
BlueDog is entitled to his/her opinion, but there are times and places to express those opinions. Doing so in this instance was wrong on both counts. As we all know, there are many Lesbians who participate in softball, as both fans and players, so I’m sure I wasn’t the only person who read those words – in my opinion, hate speech – and felt punched in the gut. While such language is extremely hurtful, I'm 61 years old and can "take it". But it really pains me to think that a young player, who may be struggling to accept her sexual identity, would be confronted with that characterization.
I’m sure these types of comments wouldn’t be permitted on this site if they were targeting, say, a specific ethnic group. Please tell me that gay-bashing language is not tolerated on Ultimate Softball, either. Otherwise, I will be getting my softball info and analysis elsewhere.
