Kelsey Ayers going to Amherst

image_name2
"I committed to Amherst for many reasons.  The academics are among the top in the country and I cannot wait to step out onto the Amherst softball field next year.  Coach Sue Everden and Assistant Coach Whitney Mollica, along with all of the players, have been so enthusiastic and welcoming.  I first fell in love with the campus when I visited in the middle of winter last year.  I would like to thank everyone at the Sorcerers organization for their support, advice and direction.  I am looking forward to enhancing my mind while continuing on with softball at the collegiate level with Amherst."

Holli Brown Commits to Sonoma State

image_name2
"I chose Sonoma State because it's kinda perfect for me. It is everything I wanted in a college, both academically and athletically. The team was so much fun on and off the field, yet it was still such a competitive atmosphere which I loved. The coaches were also extremely nice and funny and I'm really excited to play next year. The campus is gorgeous and is close enough to home but at the same time far enough away. I am more than excited to attend Sonoma next year and finally play softball at the collegiate level!"

SFU Clan Softball Signs Three Local Products for 2011
Simon Fraser University
January 3, 2011

Burnaby, B.C. – The first pitch of the 2011 season has yet to be thrown, but the reining NAIA National Champion Simon Fraser University Clan softball team announced today the signing of three recruits for the fall of 2011. SFU head coach Mike Renney utilized the NCAA’s early signing period to ink Iris Chow (Maple Ridge, B.C.), Danielle Raison (Langley, B.C.) and Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, B.C.) for next season.

“The NCAA provides us with two signing periods in our sport, one in early November and the other in April, which is substantially different from the NAIA when we were allowed to sign an athlete at any time,” said Renney. “The new rules do change things for us, and therefore our early signing period will always be focused on marquee recruits.”

Chow, Raison and Cameron all hail from the powerful Surrey Storm Midget “A” team. Shortstop Raison and catcher Cameron are considered power hitters, while centerfielder Chow is a left-handed slap-hitter with speed.

"All three can play, each are fundamentally sound in their own right,” added Renney. “Iris is one of the quickest athletes I have seen in years, and as a left-handed slapper will give opposing infields all they can handle with her short game, while her speed also provides great range in the outfield. Both Danielle and Kaitlyn can hit for power and have shown long ball potential. Danielle currently plays shortstop with her club team, and if she is hitting I am confident she can play any number of positions in the field. Kaitlyn has good size and has the potential to be a dominant catcher at our level and that fact combined with good plate presence makes her a good fit for the position.”

"With these three recruits we have filled a number of our primary needs for the years to come,” added Renney. “We are not done yet and will be looking to add a couple more recruits during the spring signing period."

The Clan are entering their first season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as part of their transition to NCAA Division II and have won four NAIA National Championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2010). SFU’s first regular season GNAC game takes place on February 26, 2011, when the Clan travel south to face Central Washington. SFU’s first home GNAC game takes place on March 5, when the Clan host Western Oregon.

Truelock to attend, play softball for Olivet Nazarene

Print
Font Size:
Default font size
Larger font size

Posted: Monday, January 3, 2011 10:41 pm

When Jordyn Truelock attended a June 2008 church camp near Indianapolis, little did she realize it would lead to college softball opportunity.

“I’d heard of Olivet Nazarene University in church,” said the Princeton Community senior, who attends New Life Church of the Nazarene along with parents Donnie and Shea Truelock and sister Whitney, now a University of Southern Indiana student.

“But probably the first time I talked with anybody from Olivet Nazarene was at that church camp after my freshman year.

“I met an Olivet Nazarene baseball player named Dee — I can’t remember his last name. He said I should contact their softball coaching staff.”

Truelock did, and last week she finalized her decision. Though USI and the University of Indianapolis showed recruiting interest, the Lady Tigers’ 17-year-old shortstop will soon sign softball scholarship papers with the Bourbonnais, Ill., school located about 60 miles south of Chicago.

If the school name sounds familiar, it’s because Princeton classmate Dakota Hack recently signed basketball scholarship papers with Olivet Nazarene. And it’s the school whose softball team beat Oakland City University in the National Christian College Athletic Association championship game little over a decade ago.

“This is a dream come true,” said Truelock, who ranks 10th in her class with a 3.89 grade-point average and is getting an academic grant to go along with a partial softball scholarship.

“Katie Friedman, one of my friends from church, went to Olivet Nazarene. Alina Ellis, another friend from church, is a freshman there now.

“When Alina and I visited Olivet Nazarene together my junior year, we stayed with Katie and a couple of her friends. They said the campus is great, everyone is friendly and tries hard, and the teachers are very nice and they’ll work with you.

“They said you can feel the presence.”

Olivet Nazarene’s Lady Tigers, who posted a 56-15 record last season and have averaged 45 wins per season in Richie Richardson’s 15 years as coach,  are getting a shortstop who batted .299 with 6 doubles, a triple and 20 RBIs last spring in leading Princeton to a 22-7-1 record, No. 12 ranking in the regular season’s last Class 3A poll, and a 3A Boonville Sectional final berth.

Truelock, also a Princeton basketball starter and en route to four letters in each sport, gained college attention last summer when she batted .452 with a .494 on-base percentage and .615 slugging percentage for the Indiana Gators 18-and-under team coached by Jasper High coach Tom Rupert.

The Gators played in a national showcase in Elgin, Ill., where their audience included Richardson.

“We like Jordy’s athleticism,” said Richardson, whose Lady Tigers have won five NCCAA championships and reached the NAIA World Series six times, finishing third in 2003.

“We recruit a lot of middle infielders. Last year our starting lineup included six high school middle infielders. We started high school shortstops at all four infield positions and in right field. Our left fielder was a high school second baseman.

“Not only did Jordy impress us with her athleticism, she’s a great kid.”

To be sure, Richardson said  that even players who come to Olivet Nazarene with softball scholarship money must make the team through tryouts. And that five 2009 players were not on the 2010 team.

“I have a great feeling that Jordy will make our team.”

The lefthanded batting and righthand throwing Truelock will have time to learn a new position. “We lost just four players from last year’s team, and in May we’ll graduate only three,” Richardson said.

Truelock is aware. “He said I’d get experience from where. And if I don’t know how to play a position,” I’ll learn,” she said.

“I like  learning new things.”

Princeton coach Rachelle Higginson sees a bright future for her protege.

“We’re very excited for Jordyn. She has wanted to attend Olivet Nazarene for a long time,” Higginson said Monday night.

“She’s a very hard worker with a positive attitude. She’ll  get where she wants to go.”

Told that Richardson said players must make the team through tryouts, and that he recruits a plethora of middle infielders, Higginson replied:

“I have no doubt Jordyn will make it. I see her playing middle infield and I can also see her playing outfield. She’s a quick learner who can pick up on a different position, and she can apply her quickness in the outfield.

“She’ll do an awesome job.”

Truelock plans to major in elementary education.

“I love kids and have always wanted to work with them.”

Two Local Softball stars commit to Paradise Valley CC and Coach Candrea

by Andy Morales on Jan. 03, 2011, under Sports

Nick Candrea: PVCC Photo

Nick Candrea is a member of the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and won a state championship in baseball and golf while coaching for over 30 years at Washington High School in Phoenix. Oh, and he isMike Candrea’s older brother.

Two local players from the 18U Tucson Impulseorganization have verbally committed to join Candrea on ThePuma roster: Mountain View pitcher Sarah Gaalswijkand Cienega outfielder and pitcher Courtney Tennyson.

According to thier club coach Pete Nielson, Gaalswijk won 16 games and also led the team in ERA, Innings, Strikeouts, Shutouts and complete games and Tennyson had a .462 batting average while driving in a team best 33 runs and also contributed 10 wins on the mound during their fall season. The team won three ASAtournaments last fall.

Sarah Gaalswijk & Courtney Tennyson: courtesy photo

The Impulse also features future Pima Aztec Chelsea Gourdin. Gourdin is a slapper who Nielson characterizes as having, “blazing speed.” Gourdin plays high school ball forMarana.

It’s a Small World:

Chelsea Gourdin: Impulse Photo

Gaalswijk will be coached by former Arizona Wildcat Jill Malina while at Mountain View and her personal pitching coach is listed as Gale Bundrick. Bundrick has been a long time coach atCDO and is a former pitching coach at Arizona.

Cyndi Duran and Laine Roth were both assistant coaches at Marana last year where Gourdin will be finishing up her senior year and Tennyson is but another Cienega athlete to move on to the next level.

Cienega has become a college recruiting machine. 19Bobcats (that I know of) went on to play college sports at various levels last year.
