Hard to understand why a person making $12,000 a year as a D1 head coach would resign...or not.

What is hard to understand is why UWGB thinks it is acceptable to pay less than what the majority of D2, NAIA, or D3 head coaching positions pay.

That is the pay for a part time D3 coach.

It would shock some that are not inside a softball program how little coaches get paid. I completely understand that softball is not a "money" making sport...blah blah blah. But it is hard for me to see coaches that make such little money they actually have to get food stamps or a second job. That is at many D1 schools. I include assistants in this as well considering how much time they spend building a successful program. The beauty of coaching in softball is you do it because you love the sport and the passion of your players. It becomes a family. It is not about the $$$$$.

Wow...a college coach is not a hobby. You have no idea what you are talking about if you make that kind of comment. Most, not all, teams are short-staffed and do more work then most of the other sports on campus because of the light staff.

@ $25K it's a hobby; a very intense one.

Beth Spoehr walked because her softball budget was going to take a massive hit and maybe even her own salary as well due to WI budget cuts in higher education.  For those who don't know, the entire UW college system is a dumpster fire, 250 million in budget cuts have to be made.  Hundreds of professors and university staff have been let go or quit already, classes have been cut, fees have risen. Yea it sucks to go to college in WI right now.

It's a shame to see this. I bet we see more of it in the near future. Education is a business and when demand for a product drops or the price you are charging gets higher then the perceived value a buyer is willing to pay then revenues fall.  Some reports have 3-4 times the number of classroom seats as there are students to fill them.  MANY small 4 yr and JC's offer athletic schollys not to have sports on campus as part of the "college experience" but to drive enrollment. Why do you think there are more equivalency schollys than head count? You give a kid room and board you still make money off tuition, books and fees. (some fees are not covered by athletic scholarships)

The unfortunate reality is that as a society we have been brainwashed into believing that a college education is required to having a successful life and we believe it.  BTW, the people doing the brainwashing are our public school educators who have a vested interest in perpetuating the myth.  Used to be a big deal to get accepted to a university. It required good grades, citizenship and character. It was TOUGH.  I guarantee you that today ANY kid with a high school diploma (and some without) can find a university that will admit them.  So an undergraduate degree is becoming worthless. How long before a graduate degree won't mean what it used to? In the meantime our kids are graduating TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars in debt to get jobs that maybe pay $30,000 a year.  We burden our youth with huge debt before they are even really grown up.

While I hate to see schools struggle like in WI there needs to be and will be more of it as the free market affects education and our kids become more and more disillusioned by the myth of higher education guaranteeing a better future.  Just look at all the educated youth in Europe or all of the engineers working in call centers in India.

Vic

Ashley Barber-Strunk -- coached her team to 3 undefeated seasons after taking over the program for the prior coach, Pat Flannigan. Think she'll get some kind of opportunity at the college level?

Me too

Vesely's statement

Quote:

“This is a huge accomplishment in my life and fulfills one of my biggest goals that I have aspired to reach ever since falling in love with the game at an early age,” said Vesely.

“When people watch the University of Houston, they are going to see a team that is passionate about the game, our University and our city. They are also going to see a team that plays extremely aggressive as it will be a team that is predicated on being mentally and physically tough. I cannot thank Hunter Yurachek and DeJuena Chizer enough for this opportunity and look forward to building Champions for Life with this exceptional program.”

LOL - always a good reason to make a decision!

How will this affect the impact gold program. Have to think this is a conflict of interest.
