Who on earth doesn't make this hire in the summer?

If they plan on a spring 2020 first season they may want to get someone out there recruiting. I would assume a lot of the good 2019 class has verbally committed elsewhere.

right... last summer would have been ideal... but you are stipulating you aren't looking for the best coach when hiring during the holidays

There are few quality coaches in college softball, but the ones who have been given the resources have proven they can succeed.
A few examples that have shown their worth :
Lawson @Kentucky, Torina @ Lsu, Murrphy @ Bama, Smith @ Ole Miss, just to name a few.
Money and funding goes a long way.
When a coach can concentrate on building his or her team instead of trying to raise money for travel plans and budget they are given a bigger/better chance.
If Clemson wants to build a competitive program the right coach can and will make it work.
There are a lot of coaches who know the game.
There are fewer who know how to develop players.
The right person can take this upstart program and make it formidable.

Would be an extremely awkward time for a head coach to leave their current position.

He with the most money likely gets to make everyone else feel awkward.  Not always, but it seems to work that way.

Awesome!  Can't wait!  So curious as to who they are interviewing. I had heard before Thanksgiving.  I just think it is so odd that when you google anything to do with the future program you see nothing but the information about the future stadium site.

Could cause some issues at some programs depending on who is hired.

Don't understand why a major program would settle with a November hire.

I doubt they will be 'settling'

Not sure that they are settling.  However, can't imagine if they are hiring now, they are hiring an established head coach.

I think we need to wait and see before using the word “settle”.

Unless you know who they are hiring. I wouldn’t put it past a big time coach leaving for Clemson right now - destination job.

Oh whatever. It’s even more ridiculous that you guys have them being a top competitor and they’re 2 years from existence. The ACC has one team. It used to have 2 when Tincher was around. We can say all day Clemson’s campus, money, so on & so on will be the difference maker.....but they truly do not have anything that other programs don’t, or will not have.

What exactly do you consider a big name hire?

Since when has Clemson been a destination job. Sans football they are average in every other sport.

Base on the rumors I’ve heard, it will be a big name hire but they won’t be pulling the coach from a big name school.

You guys can laugh now and quote me later, but one of the teams to watch this year and the next few is going to be that team Coach Thomas is putting together over at VA Tech. He has two freshmen pitchers that are absolute studs!!! Give them a year to catch on and those girls are going to dominate. He has some pretty awesome hitters coming in as well. Also, they all come from that Williamsburg Starz group and the best group of that is actually one of the younger groups that has a right handed pitcher and a lefty that are so good! Tech already has one of those and the other will end up somewhere big as well. I think she is supposed to go to JMU. Word is she wants to stay wit Herzig, but coaches across the country are scrambling with the Dean change. I would be shocked if they don't end up together. I see the ACC on the rise with that program. I may eat those words later, but I doubt it.

I would hope at best for a good coach who is currently and assistant somewhere.

And please register

Your salt is real - no one said they were a “top competitor” - just that it’s a pretty awesome opportunity. Weak P5 conference, access to top recruits and a beautiful campus.

I think its awesome and you can almost bet they are going to put some big money in it. Also, there really are some great players from that area to recruit. Nothing will be done halfway.

Are those the two that pitched against each other in the State Championship game in VA? I heard that was a duel for the ages

Yes!! I think it went like 18 innings. Definite studs! I know fall ball can be weak, but I heard both of those girls came into Tech and gave up like 1 or 2 hits. Also, that younger lefty lost her games this year to the older senior lefty as a freshman like 1 to 0. Thomas is scooping them up. The younger right hander will be a freshman this year. Those two young ones can really hit the snot out of the ball.
