Parity is growing in the International game, and Venezuela's victory over Japan is further proof of that (as was Canada's World Cup win over Japan and the Japanese following that up with two wins over the US). Attribute the parity to whatever you want, but it is growing.

This could be an interesting tournament. I wonder how much Japan will use Ueno during the round robin or if they save her for the playoff rounds.

Round robin to determine seeds for the medal round.
Medal round is all 6 teams seeded 1-6 and is double elimination EXCEPT the loser of the 2 undefeated teams at the top plays the winner of the loser's bracket and that winner plays the undefeated team in a winner take all game. So it is possible to lose your only game in the winner-take-all championship (it is not 2 of 3 nor is it loser's bracket team has to win twice over the undefeated team).

3 vs 6 winner plays 2 seed. 4 vs 5 winner plays 1 seed.
Losers of 3/6 and 4/5 play. Losers of winner matchups go to play winner of a loser's bracket.
You get the picture.
I like this better than the world cup top 2 seeds just play. A lot more games and you see most the teams twice.

So everyone was in a panic and team usa comes back days later and wins 10-3 against Japan....of course japan is now 0-2 in the tourney having given up 6 runs in bottom of 6th to benezuela to lose to them 8-6.
Japan is 0-2 and scored 9 and given up 18 runs. Uneo has not pitched and probably won't until after round robin is done and seeds are set for medal round.
Venezuela beating thm the night before 8-6 took a lot of the steam out of the win. Medal round is another shot at them when it counts.

On another note....California A's looked good.

phoenix - Moultrie showed the way with 3 base hits from the leadoff spot, and everyone else followed with run scoring base hits.  My favorite thus far, Freeman, sang the big song in the opera with her grand salami, and it was all over.  USA 10 and Japan 3.  Moore  started and Nevins finished with shutout numbers again.  As a fan of South Florida (I live near Tampa), I am particularly proud of the performances of pitcher Sara Nevins and shortstop Kourteny Salvarola who has displayed excellent range at shortstop and in a combined World Cup and Canadian Open is hitting in the .500 range for Team USA.  Go Red, White, and Blue.    Frank
PS - I doubt if Eriksen changed his approach.

Don't forget to give a shout out to California A's....they are an american team of all current playing college players.

I am still bummed we had 16 teams last year for world championships in Canada and this year for world cup and Canadian open we have the same core 4 teams--USA, Canada, Japan, and Australia and Puerto rico was in OKC nut not here in Canada and Venezuela is in Canada but did not make it to OKC. Only 5 teams made it to okc and it was the core 4. Same core plus Venzuela and California A's American team in Canada (to give the tourney 6 teams because a double-elimination bracket without even numbers would be very difficult.

Also--Australia, Canada, USA and Japan are the best teams in the world. Best is a combination of being competitive as well as quality of players, funding, fandom, and their country supporting the sport and sending the team to tourneys and building the sport (not just gathering a team for Olympics or world championships.). USA, Canada and japan hosted the most softball tournies and japan has the great softball leagues--askt michelle smith, or abbott...and rickets will be pitcjhing in japan in sept.. Their league pays better than NPF and have more fandom.
16 teams in world championships and we can only get Venezuela to Canada and Puerto rico to okc? Teams could have flew in from Africa, asia, etc. and did both tournies back to back. Fly into okc and then up to Canada afterwards then home. Plus with more teams you have longer and larger tournies. Oh well...enough griping about lack of support internationally for softball.

Team USA comes from behind in bottom 8 with ITB Salvarola scoring from second on a base hit and ultimately J. Moore pinch hitting a single with bases loaded and driving in 2, making the final 5-4 after Australia scored 2 in top 8 (winning pitcher was Nevins who did not throw well).  USA lost an opportunity to win in bottom 7 with runners on first and third and one out.  Shaky win !!  Better than losing.

USA got good coin flips for round robin. 4 of the 5 games as home team.
On the flips side Australia played 4 of their 5 games as visiting team.
Canada played all 5 of their games as visiting team.

They will seed 1-6  and go to double elimination tourney Saturday.
In the winner's bracket you will have 2 undefeated teams. Winner goes to championship and loser has an additional game in loser's bracket.
In the championship you will have the undefeated team against either the team it beat the day before or another team that ran thru loser's bracket with 1 loss.
Team USA can be undefeated in round robin, be #1 seed, and in a double elimination tourney with winner take all championship that can be their only loss.

California A's vs team usa in championship....the all-American final

Sam - I got the score at 7:30AM Eastern on my computer when I rolled out of bed - 8-1 USA over Venezuela in 5. I stayed up till just after midnight and the game still wasn't on stats - USASoftball.  USA is now 4-0 in the Canadian Open and Eriksen has changed lineups almost every game - he's using the entire roster, winning and building program at the same time.  His approach seems to be working well and the players seem to love the guy, and they believe in each other. Good to see your kid from Tulsa doing well in the Venezuela game after she had a bad opener.    Frank
PS - Those California As should be making you happy with their showing.  For USA Canada now stands in the way of a 5-0 run for USA in pool play and a #1 seed.  Go Red, White, and Blue. I wonder if the Japanese fans will be jumping all over the Coach for Team Japan??

It all boils down to medal round.
Japanese fans have their victory from last week in America in world cup of softball where they had not won gold sicne the first one in 2005. They are still happy with their gold less than a week old and they know their team is just playing thru round robin to finally get to medal round. Lineup has been joggled each game and top pitchers rested for double elimination medal round. Round robin seeding is not as important as your top pitcher being fresh when it counts. You will have to beat the top teams nomatter what in double elimination and maybe one of them twice. Even if undefeated in gold medal game it still only 1 game for the championship.

But I know what JoiseyGuy was saying....same as me.... American fans are spoiled and it is championship or bust. Like yankee fans, Laker fans, UConn women basketball fans, etc....even Bama football fans are spoiled and cannot enjoy a great season unless the end result is a championship. Underdogs and teams who have never been there before get to enjoy the journey. They enjoy their first winning season or first time making playoffs, or making a bowl game, or making final 4, or playing in championship. Teams that have been there many times before do not get to celebrate a great season if it does not end in championship since they have had recent championships and it is expected. Bama has 3 of the past 4 national championships in football. They can go 11-2 and miss championship game and season is seen as a failure and fans are looking at what could have been changed to have made the difference. Top teams don't rebuild they reload. top teams are expected to win and fans settle for nothing less. Other teams get to enjoy the ride. Top teams are relived when they win championship. I remember being in Connecticut and Massachusetts the week before superbowl and day after. Stores from rhode island to new Hampshire had 19-0 perfect season stuff for pre-order. Every sports cards and book store. Kmart and target. 19-0 was everywhere. The day after you could hear a pin drop in every sports bar. No celebration of several NFL records broken and a 18-1 season.....it was a failure. They lost championship and were heavy favorites to win. Yet the underdog new York giants who barely made the playoffs were ripped the entire season by media and fans, eli manning was questioned and ripped as a QB cabable of leading team to superbowl, and patriots were praised and called the best team ever. Expectations were sky high for patriots....not for giants. Better to be champion with several losses than a 1-loss runner-up. So the loss hurts a lot more when you and your fans expected nothing less than championship gold...and the victory is much sweeter when you are the underdog and pull the upset and win. (like 2008 Olympics in softball and miracle on ice in 1980). Great year and tourney for team usa with only 1 loss....but their only loss was in championship. Didn't matter what they did in round robin. one game for it all. Same with superbowl. And the Russian hockey team never recovered from that loss to team usa underdogs and their fans could not accept it either. Not just a loss but a loss to the hated americans.

Look at Michael phelps or usain bolt. Getting 2nd in any race is failure. If Miami heat didn't win it all they would be ripped and LeBron would have been ripped for falling short. The expectations during season was championship or bust. Golden state celebrated a great season and playoff run. They can. They overachieved. Their fans got to enjoy the ride...enjoy the little things. California A's are a team of American college softball players yet nothing is expected of them so if they won the tourney it would be a huge celebration. They would have to beat teams expected to beaat them starting with their fellow americans team usa. A's get to enjoy the ride. Team usa is gold or bust. Team usa doesn't get gold and coaches and players are ripped and people are wanting rickets, abott and others to play so we can get the expected gold. We expect gold. So anything else is failure and girls playing cannot enjoy the tourney unless they won it. That sucks. Not how you start but how you finish. Monday we will hear "team usa is back on track" or "it sucks our best players aren't on the team and this young team makes to many mistakes and the pitchers aren't lights out". There is no middle ground for a team expected to win....and it must take a lot of the fun out of it. All the patriot players from that team that lost still say that game haunts them to this day. The 18-1 season was a failure for them and their fans. I do not like participation trophies but at same time I do not like win or bust.....top teams should be able to enjoy the ride...not just live up to the ghosts of the past.

USASoftball stats can't seem to report after two outs in top 7 of a game that has featured a total of 20 hits with Team USA leading 8-5 and Canada with runners at first and second with two away.  Moore has replaced Ariotto in the circle for USA.  If USA wins this, they would be 5-0 in pool play and would be the #1 seed going into medal play.

USA is 5-0
They were #1 seed after japan and Venezuela beat Canada in back to back games. Canada lost their last 3 games.

Canada is 2-3
California is 2-3
Venezuela is 2-3

Japan and Australia are tied at 1-1 with Japan batting in bottom of 6th.
If Japan wins they go to 2-3 and Australia drops to 2-3.
So we would have a 5 way tie for 2nd thru 6th and go to the tie breaking procedure for 5 teams to seed 2-6.
And only team with a winning record of the 6 teams would be USA.

The seeds for the playoffs look like this:

#1 USA
#2 Australia
#3 California A's
#4 Canada
#5 Venezuela
#6 Japan

Here are the matchups for Saturday:

1:00: Cal A's vs. Japan
3:30: Canada vs. Venezuela
6:30: Australia vs. Cal A's/Japan Winner
8:30: USA vs. Canada/Venezuela Winner

I predict that Japanese opponents will see a lot of Yukiko Ueno.

No problem, Joisey.

And just like clockwork, Ueno gets the start vs. the Cal A's. Japan will have at least 4 games if they go all the way... wonder how much she will throw over the next few days...

With it being double elimination she will probably take next game off.
They were run ruled by A's without her so she had to start.

I watch the USA team play and only recognize about 1/3 of the names on the team.  I watch USSSA vs New Jersey in the NPF and recognize almost all of the names.   As a softball organization it would appear that USSSA gets it while ASA doesn't.

Japan beats the California A's 7-0 in 5 innings. Ueno gets the no hitter with 10 k's and only allows 1 walk. She only threw 61 pitches so the Aussies should expect to see her tonight. A winner take all final definitely favors Japan. Best 2 of 3 would probably be in the US's favor, but Ueno is definitely fresh. Everyone else better watch out....
