Yep both Danielle Lawrie and Jenn Salling will be there. I can honestly say I am surprised but happy! I know they both wanted to and I am glad they are being allowed to(and Jenn will probably see more action there than she has with Pride lately lol)! Here is an article about it!

A coin flip.

Good side of the coin.
--Sam Fischer.
--USA wins.
They have no control over level of competition and have to play who is on the field against them. The same argument I use for mid majors who have a great season but miss out on playoffs because people say "they didn't play anyone". The level of competition they played was below them so they should have won. IT SUCKS!!
If you win you were supposed to win and if you lose it was a upset and the other team is celebrating and going crazy. Being the top means you fight to stay top and have nowhere to go but down. You are what everyone else hopes to be.

Other side of the coin
--Japan walked val and she will look to be walked alot more in international play for next couple weeks. It is sound strategy since she is the homerun machine for usa so far.
--USA wins.
Yes USA wins is a good and a bad. You win but you support the "softball is not competitive as a world sport" campaigns of the other 7 sports competing with softball for the ONE olympic spot". The tourneys are the USA's to lose.
Maybe japan can pull out a win against Team USA (which is basically futures team except kate cochran who was on team usa with cat, monica etc)

We don't measure our team against others...We are the stick the world teams use to measure how far along their program has come.
softball is pitcher driven and USA isn't even using it's best players and still has the 4 of the best 5 pitchers in the world. Canada is lost without Lawrie and salling and their return will be a mental boost for worlds in canada as well as much needed good pitching. It will keep them from being run rules by usa again.

The buzz outside of softball fandom is the sport is not competitive enough nor have enough nations putting time, money and effort into fielding competitive teams....yet. USA with it's unlimited pool of ncaa talent is top in world without even using cat, abbott, and former olympians and top players who are in NPF. LSU, CAL, ASU or tennessee would place top 4 in world. And obviously OU and Bama would since their top pitchers are on team USA playing great. We are that good developing softball talent.

It is also a double-edged sword.
We shouldn't have to apologize for being so good at softball......yet if softball isn't competitive worldwide with more than a few nations with skills better than our college teams it won't be an olympic sport. Just because we dominate and support softball does not mean it deserves to be an olympic sport in the eyes of the world or olympic committee. Soccer is competitive. USA is top ranked team in world but brazil, germany, sweden, or japan can and have won the gold, world cup and world championships. World cup last year saw many uipsets in knockout rounds as japan beat the top 2 teams in the world in upsets and won it all. Softball needs that. USA can be the best but when a tourney begins there are 4 to 5 teams that have a legitimate shot at winning it all and several teams are competitive. Even men and women olympic basketball got beter as spain has won gold medal 8 years ago and many of the teams worldwide have an NBA pro basketball player on the roster. Same with women. Now that WNBA has been around awhile women from all over the world play and then play for their home countries in olympics. Australia and russia are full of wnba players and france and russia have americans who got citizenshop playing leagues there.

This is what I see for future of softball and it coming back to olympics in 2024 (my prediction). Just like basketball the top women will make team usa and the others will start playing for other countries where they play leagues. More and more quality players will be out there but the spots on team usa will remain limited--so just like becky hammon players wanting to compete in olympics will join foreign teams like canada, australia, netherlands, etc.
And when the talent is sprinkled out to other countries the sport will grow. This isn't college. Losing sucks alot when it is at a national level and your team is getting pwnded year after year. Winning builds support.

Congrats Team USA!!! and damn ESPN for showing crap all day saturday and not international fast pitch softball. And it was $4.99 per game to get the live feed via canadian open site. And I hope my money spent getting the games goes to team canada and not something else....at least i will be supporitng the sport.
Win it all this week and next as your olympics.

I thought Traina would start also.  She hasn't pitched many innings at all.  I wonder if she is hurt.  They didn't even bring her in when they pulled Ricketts.

Still 4-4 going into bottom of 7th.  Japan left runners on 1B & 2B.

5-4 Japan top of the 8th. They had runners on 1st and 3rd and scored the run on an error. They now have the bases loaded with 2 outs.

ETA: 7-4 Japan now. That lead off hitter for Japan has eaten their lunch all night! She is 4 for 5 with 3 RBI's and 1 run.

Wheels on the bus go `round & `round...and roll completely off in the top of the 8th. Japan a big rally. 7-4 at present.

Saga of Sam continues. Two-run bomb to bring score to 9-6. Two out scoring. Contagious?

Tying run coming to the plate after error by Japan and a Gibson single.

Was that the championship game?? I'm surprised Jackie wasn't used!!! She was most rested, and pitched the least out of all of them!

Japan winning builds more excitement for worlds.
The USA can be beat, australia is close, and canada gets back 2 of its stars.
These 4 will all feel they have a good shot at worlds.

Canadian open round-robin highlights and lowlights--
USA 6-0
Japan 5-1 (only los to USA 3-2)
New Zealand 0-6 (2 runs scores, 44 runs scored against)

Wrap up---
Japan wins the tourney (7-1 record)
USA is runner-up (7-1 record...only loss in championship game)
Australia wins 3rd place game (5-3 record)

California A's won it all in elite division. 12-0.
They finished round robin 8-0 with 63 runs scored and only 1 run scored against. I don't remember how many runs they scored in the 4 knockout games.

Congrats to team Japan and California A's.
And good luck to team USA as it heads into world championships in less than a week.

China and Holland will be fighting for the podium in Whitehorse too!

Li Qi and Wang LAN can pitch with anybody in the world! Can China score runs?

Holland can score. Will they get the pitching?

Who exactly would they get a podium spot over?

Japan, USA, Canada, and Australia have been widening the gap between themselves and everyone else. In the medal round, China and the Netherlands would have to beat Justine Smethurst and Danielle Lawrie
