I assume that USA won 7-0 vs. New Zealand.  Thanks.  Can you imagine having to decide who starts among Gibson, Fischer, and Johnson??  Traina is outstanding.  She just doesn't look like it because she's all business and not flashy.  She has a lot of bulldog in her and when she's on the field she spends a lot of time "in the bubble".  Really admirable.    Frank
PS - The only weakness I see for USA is that they need more offense from the catching position.  Orgeron is not a .143 hitter; she must be pressing or hitting "atom" shots.  Val Arioto is beyond description.  She is having a tournaments of a lifetime set.  The second base position is 6 for 6 in the last two games, and both kids play outstanding defense.  Tough coaching decisions to be made.

@JoiseyGuy- Bama fans know all about Jackie's greatness. She is the most mentally tough pitcher Bama has ever had in my opinion. Thank goodness we have her for two more years.

Don't forget about the California A's team. They are 9-0 while only giving up 1run! Players on team include: Morgan Melloh, Blare Luna, Mandy Ogle, and Melissa Davin.

Bamanet - I've watched Jackie for quite a few years.  She's from Naples, and I live just north of there in Florida.  I underestimated her initially because of her approach to the game, but absolutely agree with your assessment currently.  By the way, I attended the opening of the softball stadium at Tuscaloosa, and followed the program before that so I've followed the Bama program for many moons and consider it one of the best, if not the best, in the nation.  Patrick and Aly do a great job.    Frank

It's always great to hear that kind of praise from those outside our program. We've certainly come a long way since our games at Sokol park. What Murph and Aly have done in such a short time is remarkable. I was trying to put into perspective for a friend by saying it would be like South Florida winning a football national title next year. Probably not the best example, but he got it lol

Bamanet - Ah yes, Sokol Park !!!  I remember that well.  Well said !!  I live 30 minutes from South Florida and follow their athletics.  I admire their struggle to be among the "big folks", but next football season I'd be satisfied with one over .500.  Good coaching staff, some good players, but not enough big time players to constitute a big time program -- yet !!!  Slowly they climb !!    Frank

JTrain is awesome but I am keeping it in perspective as this was New Zealand she owned. New Zealand sent players paid for their own trip and expenses so the team was comprised of girls who could afford 7,000 dollars for the trip.

New Zealand is 0-5.

Lost to japan 0-7--run ruled in 6 (4 hits)
Lost to Venezuela 0-9--run ruled in 4 1/2 (1 hit)
Lost to canada 1-11--run ruled in 3 innings (3 hits)
Lost to Puerto Rico 1-3 (scored unearned run in 7th) (2 hits)
Lost to USA 0-7---run ruled in 4 1/2 innings (no hits).

Only 1 complete game of 5.....4 run ruled......10 hits in 5 games.
Gave up 37 runs and only scored 2 (1 earned).
Venezuela pitcher who got torched alot only gave up 1 hit to new zealand.
So I am proud of Jtain for handling her business but team usa beat up on a punching bag.
Saturday is the real deal.
They play two games on saturday. First against home team canada (their only loss was by 1 run to japan) then they play undefeated japan.
Playing the top two teams on the same day. Canada will have home crowd buzzing. Big day for team usa. I wish they had traina for one of these games instead of new zealand. I have faith in other pitchers--just more confidence in the Jtrain power no-nonsense pitching.

And I am very very unhappy that ESPN is not broadcasting any of the games. Drag racing, lacrosse, college football re-runs, and hours of bowling during that same time on all of the different espn channels. I really want to watch USA vs canada and especially USA vs japan....then sunday and monday we have the playoff bracket (top 4 for championship and bottom 3 for 5th place). No broadcast of  saturday, sunday and monday great softball games with team usa and top competition facing them. Ughh

So what you are saying is they have been playing sub-par teams that they should be walking all over. Does that mean there should be no excuses for someone batting with a low average? Shouldn't they all be batting like Arioto then?

Lawrie and Salling will both play for Team Canada in the upcoming ISF World Championship Games!

They will not be at WC games for the entire event.

I think PD had something to do with that Fisher kids swing!

No...
I just mentioned not putting too much stock on results against new zealand. Keep things in perspective.
New zealand is a subpar team that is not supported by it's country.
It is patched together with girls who could afford the trip and they have been owned by every team that has faced them. Because of international run rules starting after 3rd inning is complete their games were stopped earlier than they would be for ncaa or the scores would be alot worse and we probably would have seen 20+ runs scored on them in 5+ innings. The california A's girls team would beat new zealand.

And all players won't hit homeruns nomatter the pitcher and most players in softball/baseball will miss a pitch nomatter how crummy the pitcher is and ground out, fly out, foul out, line-out, or have a close pitch that was called a ball all day called a strike for strike 3. Is every pitch hit in batting practice a homerun? Every ball hit in batting cages a good hit on the ball? Even in MLB homerun derby they make outs. You can be dialed in on a pitcher, get great contact, and still make an out. When top ncaa teams play bottom feeders all the hitters do not all bat 1000.

A no-hitter is also difficult nomatter the competiton. A bad pitch can end it. The pitcher has to stay focused and the defense needs to stay frosty.
So like I said I am proud and happy for the JTrain nohitter but I also take into consideration who it was against before I liken it as if she no hit team usa like angela tincher did in 2008 or even tennessee. Awesome feat and a super accomplishment but don't read anything more into it than a poor team got owned like it should have and the icing on the cake is instead of giving up 1 or 2 hits like other teams did against them we nohit them. And a nohitter is always icing on the cake nomatter the competiton.

I almost am getting tired of typing this, but VAL just hit ANOTHER HR . It was a 3RBI blast! 5-0 USA over Canada with 1 out in top of 3. Ricketts has pitched 2 innings giving up only 1 hit, and striking out 2.

I am keeping up with game via live feed too and thus at my computer.
Val is a beast. The only 2 pitchers she couldn't hit were traina and ricketts and both of them are now her teamamtes. Val is awesome.
Fischer continues to dazzle too. How can you not like a girl with mad skills who chose a smaller college closer to home over top schools from big conferences like OU.

Without throwing a pitch.  Just say, we're walking her.

Kind of expected Ricketts to start against Japan as she's our only lefty and they're known for their speedy lefties. Anybody have a guess as to who will start tonight?

I'm guessing Jordan Taylor. Coach Eriksen may be saving Ricketts to throw against Japan in either the Canadian Fastpitch Finals or World Championships Finals. Ueno vs. Ricketts would definitely be a good matchup. I doubt the Americans see Ueno tonight.

Yeah, she seems to be a good choice. All of their fast hitters could wreak a lot of havoc on Thomas and Traina's downball stuff.

Regardless of who pitches, our defense will have to be solid.

14-2 USA wins. Canada's fielding let them down with 4 errors. Those errors led to 9 unearned runs for USA.

Sam Fischer delivers a 2 out, bases loaded, 2RBI single to give the US a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Her 3rd RBI of the game!

As much as I love the USA and softball, this tournament and most up international tournaments are a complete joke.  There are two maybe three teams that have a chance and probably twenty plus college teams who would finish top three.  It is not our fault we dominate, but Espn  knows televising these games would not pay the bills. Congrats on some of the stellar performances, but take it for what it is.  Val is a great hitter, but if you ask her she would say she would rather challenge herself against the best.  After euro of Japan, the USA has the next four best pitchers and it is not even close.  This is no more than live batting practice.

USA WINS!!! 4-3 the final score over Japan. Sam Fischer went 3-3 with all 4 RBIs for the US. Jordan Taylor pitched 3.2 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and 4 K. Chelsea Thomas got the win while pitching 3.1 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, and 4 K.

RTR - I thank you for the report.  Sam Fischer has established herself as one of the very best softball players on the planet.  Ariota. on the other hand, has established herself as one of the best hitters in the universe. Now the problem is to fit all that into a USA softball time capsule.      Frank
PS - I HAVE ALL SORTS OF RESPECT FOR THE JAPANESE PROGRAM.   FOR THE USA TO DEFEAT THEM IN THIS TOURNEY IS TRULY AN ACHIEVEMENT.  My congratulations to everyone on the USA team and their coaching staff.  A very meaningful win albeit it against a Japanese team without Ueno who is a pitching beast with super speed, great location, and a deadly changeup !!

Way to go Sam!  She and Arioto have shown themselves to be the cream.

Also congrats to Jordon Taylor, I know that Marjorie is a very proud mama.

I'm not. The Japaneses are going to save her for the big games. There are too many games for them against the Americans for them to throw her now! Even without her they competed well against the Americans and they are going to be a huge test for the American's later on down the line when they do pitch Ueno. This game doesn't mean much in all honesty, they aren't going to pitch her in a game that means so little. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them not throw her at all against the American's in the Canada Cup. After all this is just a warm up for what they are really here
for!
