WE dont have a turf field because its not a priority for the president of the university. He is not a softball fan and in the ten plus years he has never attended a game. The prior president was almost always seen in the stands.

Yep....I get the feeling he is not much of a sports guy in general.   The Medical School was his dream and he got that accomplished, so he probably could care less about anything else moving forward.

You have a read on this new A.D.?  The Head Coach of one of the other teams told me that he was a popular choice and had the support of a lot of the current staff.

He is  a good guy but he has no idea what he is getting into. The two previous  Ads quit because they were neutered by this president. He will learn soon enough that Rabinowitz keeps his Ads on a short lease. Edwards quit because he could not stand the politics and pettiness of the administration.

The Pride use six long balls (including one in each game by Pietrafesa) to win a pair of shortened contests (11-1, 10-2) over C of C.

Also hitting dingers on Saturday were Patierno and Michalowski (back-to-back in game #1), as well as Allocca and Edwards in the second game.

So much for the concerns when Hofstra played down south at the beginning of the year. They are tearing it up against CAA pitching. They now have 22 dingers in only 9 games.

3 more long balls (Pietrafesa, Scarpato, and Michalowski) for the Pride, as they win 10-2 in 5 over Seton Hall.

Cornell goes all five in the circle, giving up two earned runs (2-run HR in the 3rd) and striking out seven to improve her season record to 15-5.

At the beginning of the season, I had three questions:
1) Who will finish first now that Megan Good is sitting out the season?
2) Who will finish 3rd?
3) Who will finish last?

Three weeks into conf play and I have no better guess than I did previously. This weekend should start to bring the answers to the last two into a little more focus, but any team in this league is capable of losing to any of the other teams.

Who do you think the dark horse could be when it comes to winning the conference tourney? Hofstra and JMU are the favorites. Do we see anybody else contending or is it just a two team race?

Since you posed the question, why not provide your opinion?

I would agree with that. JMU & Hofstra...no other team is making a case for themselves yet to even be the third seed. 3-5 are a crap shoot...

Today's results...

Delaware beat Delaware State twice
Charleston beat Charleston Southern
Towson lost to Morgan State twice
JMU beats UNC
Duke beat Elon

Probably the worst Towson showing that I have been witness to in my 4 years... we couldnt do anything right... the team has been so solid defesively all season and we made 7 errors on the day... couldnt hit today, it was bad... i have no idea who we are or who we will be this weekend against Elon, but we have to play better that is for sure...

Ladera96,

I am a Terps fan but I do take notice of the other Maryland teams. I saw your post and went and looked at the game stats and other season statistics.  What I could gather is that in the first game Towson ran into a good pitcher. The Morgan pitcher had 7 strikeouts in the game. I looked at her year to date numbers and that is consistent with what she does. In the second game there were 3 different pitchers thrown out there by Towson and Morgan had 14 hits. Yes errors happen, but they happen a lot when the pressure is on and the other team has you on the ropes. Towson has weak pitching, and when the other team comes in with decent pitching and are swinging the bats, they can be had. The weak schedule they have had has apparently set up illusions that they are much better than they are.

your assesment I cant argue, it is what it is... The hitting has faced good pitchers at UNCG, JMU, etc and has still been solid most times this season... In my opinion, it seemed to me they were looking past Morgan and were focusing on Elon this weekend. Are they one of the top 2 teams in the conference, No... However i do think they will bounce back and contend for a place in the CAA's... big series this weekend...

Yet, Drexel has 3 wins in conf play. They may not be the bottom of the CAA at the end of the season.

All it tells me is that the CAA is a two team league and the rest of them should break off and form their own conference.

HU takes both ends of today's DH against Delaware...

Leading the Pride in game #1 was Brielle Pietrafesa, who went 3-for-4 at the dish, hitting her 10th home run of the season and knocking in four of Hofstra's six runs in a 6-0 shutout.....Sarah Cornell went the distance in the circle, surrendering just two hits and K'ing 10 to improve to 16-5 on the season.

In the second game, Sophia Dandola was not her usual sharp self (4 earned runs in 4 innings).  However, the offense really picked up her, with Kristin Hallam, Brittany Allocca (4 RBI), and Courtney Scarpato (5 RBI) all collecting three hits, and Sarah Edwards/Nikki Michalowski, and Michaela Transue contributing two apiece....Sarah Cornell came in relief for two innings to finish off a 13-5 victory in 6 innings.

Only one long ball, but the Pride hitters continue to beat up on CAA pitching, scoring 14 runs in 5 innings to sweep Delaware, 14-4.

Leading the way, as she has done most weekends since the start of conference play, was Pietrafesa, who went a perfect 4-for-4, hitting her 11th HR of the season in 2nd inning and then adding a 2-run double in the 4th to finish the game with 4 runs batted in.....Currently, she is batting .500 in CAA contests this season.

Also having a multiple-hit game for the Blue & Gold on Sunday afternoon were Hallam (2-for-4; 2 RBI single in the 2nd), Michalowski (2-for-3, 2 RBI triple in the 4th), and Transue (2-for-4; a pair of RBI singles in the 2nd and 4th).

Sarah Edwards would also knock in a pair of runs, driving in two on her lone hit of the game, a double in the 4th.

Cornell was not as sharp as yesterday, but battled through adversity, surrendering 4 runs on 8 hits in her 5 innings of work.  She picks up her 17th win of the season.

Hofstra's win, coupled with a rare JMU loss (1-0 to C of C) now put the Pride two games up in the battle for the top seed in the CAA tourney.

JMU suffers a bad loss to a .500 Marshall team yesterday (7 - 0).  This team just doesn't show up for some games.

Seven long balls (5 in game #1) including a pair each from Michalowski (both in the first game) and Patierno, keep the Pride undefeated in CAA play, as they sweep both ends of today's DH with Drexel by scores of 9-0 and 11-2.

Also starring at the plate for HU was Allocca, who went 4-for-5 between the two games, driving in three total runs, highlighted by a solo home run in the 1st inning of the first game.

Pietrafesa kept her in-conference batting average at .500, going 3-for-6, with two of these hits being doubles in game #2 to drive in a combined four runs.

Sarah Cornell was lights out in her start in the circle, surrendering just one hit in five innings and striking out six to improve her record to 20-5 and lower her ERA to an excellent 1.69.

Sophie Dandola would also do her job in the nightcap, tossing five innings, giving up two runs (both unearned) and striking out two to up her record to 13-3 and drop her earned run average to an amazing 1.27.

On an afternoon where HU honored it's seven seniors, it would a trio of this group that would make the most of their final appearance playing at Bill Edwards Stadium, leading Hofstra to an 8-0 win in 5 innings.

With the bases loaded in the 1st, Sarah Edwards hit a two-run single to get the Pride on the board....She later added a bases loaded walk in the 4th to end the day with a team-high three RBIs.

Moments later, it was Kaitlyne Musa putting the finishing touches on a five-run 1st inning when she doubled to score two before getting thrown out trying to stretch her blast into a triple.

Continuing her hot streak, Brielle Pietrafesa (2-for-3) would send the crowd home early, when she hit a two-out, bases jammed single to score Musa another Pride senior, Michaela Transue (2-for-3) in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final two games of the contest.

In addition to her senior teammates [Pietrafesa and Transue], sophomore shortstop, Kristin Hallam, also notched a multiple hit performance, going a perfect 4-for-4 to raise her season average to .333.

Sarah Cornell went the distance in the circle, giving up 3 hits (only one after the 1st inning) and striking out eight for the "w".....For the series, she was 2-0, not surrendering a run in 10 innings of work, and striking out 14 between her two starts.

Towson has one pitcher who is not overpowering. There is nothing to get together beyond her. Hofstra is too strong this year and JMU beat them 3 times.
