Thoughts on the Big 12 this upcoming year? Including rankings? Will Oklahoma still be on top of the Big 12 or will someone else find their way to the top?

I'm curious to hear what people are thinking

1.OU
2. Baylor
3. Ok state
4. Texas
5. Texas Tech
6. Iowa state
7. Kansas
I think OU still takes it (boring) but if Baylor’s pitching can get them deeper into games aka Gia Rodoni can’t do it alone, then they will easily get second. I’ve seen Sid Holman pitch, she throws hard and has a year under her belt I believe of practicing with the team. Baylor also needs to learn to hit with runners on. Always have hitters with great batting averages but can’t do much when they’re stranded time after time.
OK state oughta make some noise with Show.
Texas just had the biggest hire in my opinion in the past 5 years. Same with Baylor. Brooke bolinger is pretty good and Shea Coats can probably back her up but they leave stranded base runners and don’t have a deep enough lineup. Great defensive players but weak hitting. Hope I’m proven wrong.
I’m really pulling for Iowa State. J really like their program and think their girls always play great games they just need it to all come together. This will be Megan Smiths last year in Kansas, no doubt about it in my opinion. Texas Tech got some decent transfers and they could do good things if they can grab the necessary wins pre-conference games. They’ll play teams like A&M close and then lose to so so teams too often.

  1. OU  - Take a backstep but Rise ball hitters will keep them ahead of OKST
  2. OK State – Rise ball pitcher will bring them to #2
  3. Texas – New spark will ignite them
  4. Texas Tech – Something good going on out west…
  5. Baylor – lost some good BA, lots of questions
  6. Iowa State
  7. Kansas
  8. Iowa

Better to finish 8th in the Big 12 than 12th in the Big 10...

1.  OU - Nobody else is close.  Departures won't hurt, they just reload.
2.  OK State - Show was a very nice addition.
3.  Baylor - Always a strong hitting team and Rodini is a stud.
4.  Iowa State - Wishful thinking perhaps.  Good incoming recruit class.
5.  Texas - Mike White will elevate them.  Question is how soon and how much.
6.  Texas Tech - Getting better.  Could challenge for 4th.
7.  Kansas - Will miss Big 12 tourney for 3rd straight year.
8.  Iowa - Would finish 8th in Big 12 and will finish 8th in B1G in 2019.

Actually it's not.  8th out of 7 teams is decidedly worse than 12th out of 14.  Also 12th in B1G still makes the conference tournament.

I get the point though.

On another thread, someone commented on how Baylor and Oklahoma State usually give Oklahoma a good game pretty much every year - in conference play...  and that led me to looking at Oklahoma's conference record over the last few years. Missouri and Texas A&M left the conference after the 2012 season.  So I looked back over the time that the conference has had just the current 7 teams (2013-2018).  During that six season run... Oklahoma has lost just EIGHT times to conference opponents. They have lost games to just three conference opponents.

Here is Oklahoma's record against conference teams in each of the last 6 years:

Year     W-L       W%      Total     W%
2018   21-0    1.000      21-0   1.000
2017   21-1      .955      42-1    .977
2016   17-1      .944      59-2    .967
2015   14-2      .875      73-4    .948
2014   16-2      .889      89-6    .937
2013   16-2      .889    105-8    .929

During this 6 year period, Oklahoma has lost 3 games to two different conference opponents and 2 games to another (for their 8 total losses).
Without looking it up... let's see if anyone can figure out which two teams have beaten Oklahoma 3 times - and which team has beaten them twice.

I will post the answer tomorrow.

<< They lost 2 times to Texas and 3 times to Baylor and Kansas >> (smcouvillion)

Yes, that is correct.
Did you know that...?  Or did you have to look it up?

I'd think most people would be very surprised to see that Kansas has beat Oklahoma more than any other conference opponent since they went to the current 7 team conference configuration (tied with Baylor - with 3 wins each).

Only three conference teams have a win against Oklahoma in the last six seasons (2013-18). Baylor (with 3) and Texas (with 2) are not surprising...
but Kansas (with 3 wins)..?  That has got to surprise some people.

Kansas was pretty good several years ago.  They've really struggled the past couple seasons.

Back in 2013...  when Oklahoma had one of the best teams ever...
they had some weather issues when scheduled to play their 3 games vs. Kansas - and ended up playing just twice in a DH.
In the first game, the score was tied 2-2 going into the 7th. Oklahoma scored 2 in the 7th to win the game 4-2.

Kansas pitcher, Kelsey Kessler pitched a 7 hit shutout against the Sooners in the second game,  winning 2-0.

So... against what was one of the best teams of all time - Kansas played them twice in 2013 and came away with the same amount of runs scored, 4-4.

I'm starting to like Oklahoma State's lineup next year, especially if Show can be an ace in the circle.

C        Jr. Sydney Springfield          .257 BA and 12 HR in 2 years at LSU
1B/DP So. Michaela Richbourg        .271 2 HR 13 RBI as a freshman pinch hitter last season
2B      Sr. Madi Sue Montgomery    .344 15 HR 68 RBI
3B      Sr. Rylee Bayless                 Hit .563 before tearing her acl last season
SS      So. Sydney Pennington        .300 7 HR 42 RBI as a Freshman
LF      Fr. Cheyenne Factor              PGF High School All-American
CF       So. Chelsea Alexander        .300 Made some ridiculous plays on defense
RF       Sr. Taylor Lynch                 .358 8 HR 47 RBI
DP/1B Sr. Samantha Show            .290 4 HR at Texas A&M

I don't really see Springfield as a catcher... But definitely in the mix somewhere.

Springfield will play 1B or DP at OSU

No offense to Sydney, she is a great player but is not a catcher. She doesn't have the arm and quick reflexes to hold down that position at this level

If they can tweak her swing and shorten it out, she can do some very big things for OSU next year, hope she kills it!

The reason she practiced at catcher at LSU because LSU had little to no catcher depth and it was a chance to get another big bat in the lineup as a position player.

Oklahoma State might give the Sooners some competition. Sprang is a good pitcher. Just overhyped at Tennessee. More an all-conference caliber than all-American. Nice pickup for the Corgirls.

Oklahoma State has a good coach and they are recruiting great players. I look for them to overtake Baylor soon and Texas will be on the rise with their new coach.

1) OU by a mile
2) OSU
3] Texas
4] Baylor

The rest don’t matter.

So, you're saying Texas is about to replace OSU as the next "team on the rise?" [smile]
