Makes sense given commitments and coaching background (Dean coaching the NFP Bandits).

Camryn Greenwood has surgery to repair a torn labrum.  Not sure how long she will be out.

Auburn really needs things to start happening that are EQUAL TO or less than meets the eye.

Veach ready to go, Tannon Snow will be back when practices start. It sounds like they are just going to manage what Tannon can do going forward.  We need some warmer weather here for sure.

Rumor I am hearing is that she is sitting out the Spring and will look to transfer somewhere in the Fall.

Tannon will be here Tuesday.  Everybody else was here for the first practice, which was held indoors at the football facility.

Ketelhut is the new hitting coach as expected, will be announced after all the administrative stuff is complete with school starting next week.

Auburn Softball Notebook: 'Coach Eddy is awesome'

Kendall Veach on Auburn's new hitting coach, two Tigers slowed by injuries, intrasquad games coming and more.

AUBURN, Ala. – Hitting coach Eddy Ketelhut has been on the job for only a matter of weeks, but he’s already made a big impression on Auburn players.

“Coach Eddy is awesome,” said junior Kendall Veach, Auburn’s leading home run hitter last season. “I think he works well with us. He wants to adjust to us the way we are as hitters and not just have a specific guideline. He adjusts to us, and that’s awesome. All the girls love him. He’s excited, just as we are. We’re just glad to have him out there.”

Ketelhut has varied coaching experience at the college, high school and club levels. He led the Beverly Bandits to the 16U national championship last season. He played 15 years of professional fast-pitch softball, including seven for Team USA.

“It’s very relatable,” Veach said. “We can ask him questions and he can answer them. He knows the answers from the softball standpoint, too. We always talk. He’s seen a ball coming in like 85. He’s awesome. He’s going to be good for us.”

***

Two Auburn freshmen are being held out of practice because of minor injuries.

Pitcher Chardonnay Harris is battling a sore arm.

"It's tough sometimes for a freshman,” Auburn coach Mickey Dean said. “You don't know when and how to take care of your body sometimes. That's sometimes a process for a freshman. We're looking for her to get healthy and get back into her work."

Shortstop Taylon Snow is out for “a couple of days” with an aggravated left heel.

***

Veach, who had offseason knee surgery, said she is close to 100 percent and will be there well before the season starts.

“I’m feeling a lot better,” Veach said. “I’m back and doing everything, back with the team and getting my workouts and everything. I’m only limited in squatting for a long time. I can only go a couple of minutes at a time right now, but it’s getting better.”

Veach has worked at first and third base in preseason practice. She could also be in the mix at catcher.

***

Junior pitcher Makayla Martin hasn’t batted in a game since high school, but that could change in the coming season.

“In practice, Coach is always in favor of me hitting,” Martin said. “It’s hard because I haven’t hit in a game in over two years. I like hitting, but it’s hard to get back in the groove.”

There was a time when it was different.

“I used to be a better hitter than pitcher,” Martin said, “but then it switched.”

***

Tannon Snow,, who missed all of last season with an undisclosed illness and was limited in fall practice, is back on the field. Dean said she is concentrating on hitting. A minor shoulder injury is preventing her from throwing and catching.

***

Dean said intrasquad games will start either in the coming weekend or early next week. Auburn opens its season on Feb. 8 against Marshall at Jane B. Moore Field.

Interesting piece from Auburn. Any former Dean player is laughing at reading about "soreness" or "minor shoulder injury". I'm betting zero percent of the Auburn players ever seriously lifted or worked out before Dean arrived. That Harris would have arm soreness was predictable but still a bit surprising almost 5 months in. I'd be curious to know what her best bench press is...Megan Good currently is around the 200lb mark. That's what Coach Dean brings to the table.

Auburn, you are in pretty good hands.

yeah, Clint Myers certainly never had them in the weight room and the Auburn S&C staff didn't work them out at all until MD arrived.

The man is a good coach, but good lord, get off your knees.

My guess is Outofzone refers to the military style discipline Dean uses, including physical training.  Certainly the Myers' clowns did not bring that sort of drill into the picture.  It will be good for those girls.

You have powerful kids who can clear 190 feet with a glorified popup... don't need them being Canseco-ized. I agree to that extent

I'm a Dean fan & not an Auburn hater. Not sure what in my post led you to believe I have some sort of worship complex.

Agreed. There's a current JMU player who posted a video of her squatting some ungodly weight of 320lbs...not sure how that helps her on the softball field but she might make a great fullback.

Not sure what type of workout regiment Clint Myers used in the past, but I know the pitchers spent a lot of time in the kinesiology lab working on mechanics.  Not sure if Coach Dean is continuing the practice.

I think it goes to core strength. Legs and trunk create the torque for the power swing in lieu of chest/arms like many baseball players have anatomically. JMO

So you agree with 3LT that moving big weight is not necessarily an important factor then you try and take a jab at my kid as a player. Dont know what that has to do with anything. Besides my kid was a pitcher
Have a crappy day
