After several years of waiting, Arizona finally has a roster.

Add the much needed SPEED.
And a number of transfers: 3 JC transfers, all from Arizona (2 from Pima) ; 2 Red Mountain SOPH transfers

NO transfer from any Top10 teams....
--was expected at least 2.

The transfers for Arizona dont seem like starters.

Maybe one....

Expecting much more high profile players.

Recruiting must get better.

Coach will make it happen.

I hadn't looked that HR figure up (71 HR's given up by the sloppy three), but that sure sounds BAD.

Fowler, will be a welcome addition this season. I'm not sure what the prognosis is, regarding her back issues and ability to pitch entire games, but regardless, I think she can do a better job than the "sloppy three", with her entire spine removed!

I'm getting frustrated, just thinking about the lack of "pride" to get better, "drive" to develop a new pitch, "will" to perfect at least one pitch that can be thrown consistently - without getting blasted for a HR, some of these UA pitchers have (or at least ONE in particular - care to guess who?).

Words of advice, for some of these players; Just being able to Wear the UA jersey is an accomplishment, BUT its is NOT the end of the journey (or at least, it shouldn't be), wearing it with Pride, because you know that you did, everything you could, to help the team WIN and to leave a legacy behind you - is what its about!

I don't think some of these players get it!

Since you were mostly referencing pitchers in your post -- has it ever occurred to you that with 100% effort and positive attitude, THAT IS THE BEST THEY CAN PITCH?   Like in the other thread about Big10 recruiting, where one coach said: "you can't take a plough horse to the Kentucky derby".

You need to hang your frustration around Mike Candrea's neck.   He's the one who has only recruited ONE (1) ace (not a plough horse) pitcher since Amanda Williams left in Jan, 2007.  That's one single, solitary ACE in six and a half years, if you're counting.

Her stats at Premier this year:  http://www.pointstreak.com/baseball/player.html?playerid=523694

Better than I had expected.   Good potential.   Best potential to be an Ace since Fowler showed up.  Let's see how it develops.  She's become really tall, and strong the past two years.  Candrea bet on potential two years ago, and she has realized it.   Could become a surprise factor on the team this year... if she continues to develop.   Pretty raw still.

Plough-Horse amongst Thoroughbreds!
Wow, what an analogy!
And I thought I was brutal, you definitely got me beat.

Whatever it is; limits on talent, athletic ability, work ethic or all three, all that I know is - that there should be some measurable improvement, with at least one pitch, don't you think?

Hypothetical Example; if the only pitch I could throw, somewhat consistently, was a screw ball - and for 3 seasons now, opposing batters seem to have figured this pitch out and are just lying in wait for me to throw it - and are blasting it over the fence when I do - should I not have some degree of pride fullness to perfect another pitch, over the summer - say one that will stay inside the park! Now, 3 years have past, and I still have ONLY 1 pitch - what does that say about me? Answer: I don't care to get any better, I do what I want, and working hard aint it, or maybe it's a case of the "it's not my faults" (where delusion overcomes reality to save ones ego).

GatoMontes, Are you trying to hurt my feelings? I was planning on trying to make it to at least one of the games this weekend, and was even going to buy you a soda. Forget it now.
I will stay home and write useful stuff, on these softball internet boards, instead.

Good Riddance!

It was good to see Kenzie Fowler pitch a few innings today. One run, three hits, 6 K's in 4 innings. It's always nice to see the new players during fall ball too.

And Floyd.  I think there will be happy campers in and around Hillenbrand in 2014.

What happens to; Babcock, Pinion and Bowling?
I assume Bowling is still injured, but any word on how the other two looked this weekend?

More of the same, Highly improved or somewhere in between?

I used that phrase b/c it came up in a quote from the Michigan St. coach about whether you should expect a mid tier Big 10 team to get to OKC.   A coach/Program can improve a player's mechanics, a player's mental approach, a player's attitude, but certain things are simply genetically there or they are not... raw speed, raw strength, hand eye coordination, 3D spatial awareness, etc.  You can train a plough horse for the next five years, every day, with the best trainer in the business, and all you get is beaten by 50 lengths instead of 60 by a thoroughbred.  Similarly, you could have trained me at age 15 for ten years, every day, with the best sprint coach in the world, and all that would have achieved is get my 100 meter time from 15 seconds to 13 seconds.   That's why I wrestled instead.  No point in spitting into the wind.

OK, from what I can gather, from others who actually attended games this past weekend, it appears that Babcock did not pitch much, and when she did - she seemed to have trouble finding the strike zone and was behind the count, in the few batters she faced (which is typically what we have seen from her in the past).

Here is how I see it shaking out:
Fowler - #1 (Needs some innings to get dialed in, after being off so long, but certainly the stronger of the entire pitching staff)
Floyd - #2 (She needs to face big hitters, so we can see how good she really is)
Pinion - #3 (good for a few inning, maybe a good closer-type -but certainly has proven that she can't throw a complete game without giving up HR's)
Bowling - #4 (had shown some signs of promise - last year, but with time off due to injury, may have to prove herself, all over again)
Babcock - #5 (had her opportunity, and then some, but couldn't step up - seems to only be effective on one side of the plate)

Anyone care to chime in?

Well... to be fair everyone at this point last year said Bowling would've saved the program this season. Really means nothing at this point if you were good in HS or Travel Ball.

CalRoxMySox44 - Curious, Will you still be a Proud Cal Fan this season? How do you feel, your team will do? Is it true, that last years lead-off batter; Khaly Taylor - quit the Cal softball team, for a better chance to winning something by switching to Track?

Why would I not be? I have been one for my whole life.

You are correct that Khala is running track at Cal. Your reasoning is off. Khala's ultimate dream is to run track in the olympics. As good as she is at softball she is even better at track. She will do good things!!

This season will have ups and downs as any young team will. Sure has been the case with fall ball this year. Some really great games and one awful game vs. San Jose State. We shall see.

Good luck to the arizona players this season and may they have a good enough season to where you don't tear them down on this website.

Interesting timing for Khala to suddenly renew her Olympic desires (after spending a season under the coaching prowess of the legendary; Ninemire), but good for her! I'm sure others wish they had such options...(not suggesting that anyone else would want to actually leave, Ninemire - but apparently, even though experiencing one of their best seasons, it still wasn't a good enough, for at least one)...

This is off topic and has nothing to do, with the above discussion, but;
I think there is an analogy out there, where it mentions rodents, sensing a sinking ship, far before a person knows it's going to sink. I just wonder if the same could be applied to a softball team, where the former player would be the rodent - floating off to greener pastures, and the coach being the stooge, still  standing on the ship, with wet shoes, thinking everything is going to be alright?

Alabama & Georgia Tech both @ Arizona the same weekend? Hey jayrot, looks like you should spend Valentines Day Weekend in the Old Pueblo (Tucson) next spring!

Scroll down the schedule link to the Hillenbrand Invitational Feb 13-16. Alabama, Georgia Tech, New Mexico, Grand Canyon. Should be a fun tourney.

Pretty sure she isn't "eligible" to play any games until Spring Semester due to her transfer and having to sit 1 Full Season.

Once Season starts, how do you see the starting line-up?
Defense:
1. Pitcher?
2. Catcher?
3. First?
4. Second?
5. Third?
6. Short Stop?
7. Left Field?
8. Center Field?
9. Right Field?

Offense (Batting Line-up):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Assuming pitchers will not hit, who will be the DH?

1. Pitcher? Fowler (even in her worst outing, still better than others)
2. Catcher? Goodacre or Rodriguez (Most HR's on Team, 2nd in BA, last season; I give it to Goodacre)
3. First? Wilson or Rodriguez (this is tough, since Wilson also plays OF, and Rodriguez had a good BA last season - but is not an Outfielder, how do you keep both in the line-up?)
4. Second? Suitos or ??? (Suitos had good BA last season, but lousy bunter and commits to many defensive errors - played only by default, but there are other options now).
5. Third? Young or Mauga? (Young was 2nd in HR's last season, but 7th in BA - I still give it to Young)
6. Short Stop? Fox or Mercado - anyone care to guess?
7. Left Field? Perez is injured, so anyone that can HIT, should be considered here. If Rodriquez takes 1B, look for Wilson here.
8. Center Field? Levine (although .297 last season, and low OB%, she may still get start by default)
9. Right Field? Rodriguez, had a very low BA last season, and is not a great outfielder. This position is WIDE open for anyone to grab.

Offense (Batting Line-up):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Assuming pitchers will not hit, who will be the DH?

Fox and Mercado sharing F3 and F6.  Probably with Fox at F6.
