I don't know if any of you have a financial adviser or if you do, do you go in for your yearly meeting but we do and today was, in part, that day.  We also had to make more investments so this worked out really well.  If any of you do, have you seen your portfolios?  Wow.  My wife and I get monthly statements but we put them in a file and really don't read them that much.  If you have not done so, please do it and see what these last two years have meant to you.  We had a huge increase over the last two years.  I can't tell you how shocking that is.  For our investment, we decided to go with what we had but also we diversified even more.  We are going to invest some in European funds.  The reason why is that I believe that Trump will get a better trade deal and if he does, European countries will see increased returns.  It is risky but not as risky as we thought.  Something to think about.

I had to run some errands and do some favors for people today in a town I rarely go to.  I was rushed and had a HS golf match today with a bus time of 1:10.  When I finished the errands and favor, I went to a national sandwich chain to get a sandwich in the drive through.  I had some extra time and this national chain has great food.  Their drive thru has 3 parking spaces past the payment window and it is normal for people to play and pull up.  In fact, they put an order number on your car as they ask you to drive forward.  As I pulled up and ordered, there was one car before me and so, I knew I would have a lot of time to spare.  I ordered a ham sandwich and a tea.

What should have been simple became a mess.  The lady in the Buick in front of me says as loudly as she can, "You know I'm not pulling forward.  You know it.  YOU KNOW I AIN'T PULLING FORWARD!  When I pull forward, you serve all the other &^%*#$ and I sit and wait.  I AIN'T PULLING FORWARD!"

The manager came out and walked down the line apologizing to all of us waiting and telling us he can't make that person pull forward but would send someone out to collect our money and bring our food.

That is where we are now in this society.  Some people can get by with anything and people are afraid to hold them accountable.  I kind of laughed as I got my ham sandwich and pulled out past her.  I don't know how she responded but  I am betting that it got loud.

Yesterday, I went to the PGA in St. Louis.  It was amazing.  As you all know, I am supposed to be using a cane and can't walk for great distances since my surgery.  I tried to mow the yard a couple of days ago and that was a mistake.  I took my cane and promised my wife I would use it so that I didn't cause any swelling when I am so close to being able to walk normally again.  One mess up is enough.  We were allowed to sit on a deck for handicapped people and I carried a statement for when my surgery was.  I sat next to a guy who had had his hip replaced so we had a lot to talk about.  He isn't doing so well.  WE both learned a lot as we sat there.  BTW, we sat next to one of the directors of the PGA who is from Puerto Rico.  He was assigned to monitor the 18th green and all of the "stuff" that goes on there.  We talked a lot of softball and he used to play for the Puerto National Team.  Anyway, I learned a lesson about discrimination for the handicapped.  A lady came up with some others and demanded to see any evidence that that gentleman who had had his hip replaced and me were handicapped.  She said that she was demanding that we be removed.  Her relative was handicapped and in a wheel chair and I was on a cane so I wasn't handicapped enough.  The other gentleman was in a wheel chair.  A Police Officer showed up to remove me.  I told the officer when he came up that I had a document for the surgery and that I could show him the scar with the glue still on the incision if he wanted.  The PGA guy stood up and pulled rank.  He said that I would not be removed and that I had been there all day waiting.  He said he saw me come up the ramp, walk before I got to the ramp and that I fit the description of those who can use the deck perfectly.  I never knew that someone with a handicap would attack another for, "not being handicapped enough."  Ironically, there were 3 guys on the far side of the deck who were not handicapped at all.  No one approached them to remove them.  Another sign of the times.

Side note, the guy I sat with with the hip replacement was in bad shape.  I truly believe that the key for me was getting up and walking the next day.  I truly believe that refusing the meds etc. with the exception of the medicine that was to prevent blood clots, was a good thing.  He didn't do that and I really don't know if he is going to over come where he is.  He is 66.  I am 60.

I am starting my last year of teaching.  It has been a great ride.  I hope that I have impressed you all with the stories I have told about the kids here, the faculty and the administration.  I am so Blessed!  It will be hard for me to quit and retire.  I love my job and can't wait to get to school each day.  In 32 years of teaching, I can honestly say that my alarm clock has never gone off.  I wake up before it goes off and get to school early every day.

The administration I work for is so proactive in thinking about potential problems and providing solutions and/or things to think about to help us all.  Much of the technology we have now is due to their diligence.  We have mandatory requirements now for CPDUs and continuing education which include topics like cyber bullying, sexting, ...  In many districts, the teacher has to find presentations that meet the requirements and pay.  In my district, our administration tries to get those things covered in teacher institute days.  Having said all of this, the reason for this post is our main topic this year which is technology, cyber bullying, sexting ...

Our district brought in Megan Meier's mom to give her presentation on cyber bullying and discuss Megan's suicide.  It would break your heart to hear the presentation which included her 911 call.  A video of her husband describing how he tried to lift her body and get her down is also included.   To briefly tell you some background.  Megan was 13 years old and wanted to add a "cute guy" who has asked to be "friended" to her account.  She was allowed to do so and it seemed to be a good thing for a short time.  However, this guy turned on her and started calling her names, making fun of her for being "fat" and said horrible things about her.  In the end, Megan killed herself.  The FBI became involved when the mom read the messages in Megan's account.  We were shown the messages.  What human being could call a 13 year old those things and say all of the other things?  It turned out that "Josh Evans" did not exist.  In fact, Josh was really the mom of one of Megan's friends and they lived two doors down the street.  The mom was tried and convicted but the conviction was overturned.  That lady is walking the streets now knowing that she drove a 13 year old to suicide.

In these times, I believe that social media has become evil.  We were presented with so much to think about per technology.  It is amazing how kids now cheat on test using their smart watches.  How the have ways to get around the school's security system for internet use.  In the end, after hearing about all of the dangers of social media and technology, I believe what it really came down to is parenting.  I am convinced that you can't stop the evil potential of these things.  Instead, we have to make sure that we parent our kids.

Please forgive me for this rant.  I was so frustrated when this presentation ended.  In my heart, I just don't see any redeeming value to these accounts.  JMHO!
