I don't know if any of you have a financial adviser or if you do, do you go in for your yearly meeting but we do and today was, in part, that day.  We also had to make more investments so this worked out really well.  If any of you do, have you seen your portfolios?  Wow.  My wife and I get monthly statements but we put them in a file and really don't read them that much.  If you have not done so, please do it and see what these last two years have meant to you.  We had a huge increase over the last two years.  I can't tell you how shocking that is.  For our investment, we decided to go with what we had but also we diversified even more.  We are going to invest some in European funds.  The reason why is that I believe that Trump will get a better trade deal and if he does, European countries will see increased returns.  It is risky but not as risky as we thought.  Something to think about.

I had to run some errands and do some favors for people today in a town I rarely go to.  I was rushed and had a HS golf match today with a bus time of 1:10.  When I finished the errands and favor, I went to a national sandwich chain to get a sandwich in the drive through.  I had some extra time and this national chain has great food.  Their drive thru has 3 parking spaces past the payment window and it is normal for people to play and pull up.  In fact, they put an order number on your car as they ask you to drive forward.  As I pulled up and ordered, there was one car before me and so, I knew I would have a lot of time to spare.  I ordered a ham sandwich and a tea.

What should have been simple became a mess.  The lady in the Buick in front of me says as loudly as she can, "You know I'm not pulling forward.  You know it.  YOU KNOW I AIN'T PULLING FORWARD!  When I pull forward, you serve all the other &^%*#$ and I sit and wait.  I AIN'T PULLING FORWARD!"

The manager came out and walked down the line apologizing to all of us waiting and telling us he can't make that person pull forward but would send someone out to collect our money and bring our food.

That is where we are now in this society.  Some people can get by with anything and people are afraid to hold them accountable.  I kind of laughed as I got my ham sandwich and pulled out past her.  I don't know how she responded but  I am betting that it got loud.

Yesterday, I went to the PGA in St. Louis.  It was amazing.  As you all know, I am supposed to be using a cane and can't walk for great distances since my surgery.  I tried to mow the yard a couple of days ago and that was a mistake.  I took my cane and promised my wife I would use it so that I didn't cause any swelling when I am so close to being able to walk normally again.  One mess up is enough.  We were allowed to sit on a deck for handicapped people and I carried a statement for when my surgery was.  I sat next to a guy who had had his hip replaced so we had a lot to talk about.  He isn't doing so well.  WE both learned a lot as we sat there.  BTW, we sat next to one of the directors of the PGA who is from Puerto Rico.  He was assigned to monitor the 18th green and all of the "stuff" that goes on there.  We talked a lot of softball and he used to play for the Puerto National Team.  Anyway, I learned a lesson about discrimination for the handicapped.  A lady came up with some others and demanded to see any evidence that that gentleman who had had his hip replaced and me were handicapped.  She said that she was demanding that we be removed.  Her relative was handicapped and in a wheel chair and I was on a cane so I wasn't handicapped enough.  The other gentleman was in a wheel chair.  A Police Officer showed up to remove me.  I told the officer when he came up that I had a document for the surgery and that I could show him the scar with the glue still on the incision if he wanted.  The PGA guy stood up and pulled rank.  He said that I would not be removed and that I had been there all day waiting.  He said he saw me come up the ramp, walk before I got to the ramp and that I fit the description of those who can use the deck perfectly.  I never knew that someone with a handicap would attack another for, "not being handicapped enough."  Ironically, there were 3 guys on the far side of the deck who were not handicapped at all.  No one approached them to remove them.  Another sign of the times.

Side note, the guy I sat with with the hip replacement was in bad shape.  I truly believe that the key for me was getting up and walking the next day.  I truly believe that refusing the meds etc. with the exception of the medicine that was to prevent blood clots, was a good thing.  He didn't do that and I really don't know if he is going to over come where he is.  He is 66.  I am 60.

I am starting my last year of teaching.  It has been a great ride.  I hope that I have impressed you all with the stories I have told about the kids here, the faculty and the administration.  I am so Blessed!  It will be hard for me to quit and retire.  I love my job and can't wait to get to school each day.  In 32 years of teaching, I can honestly say that my alarm clock has never gone off.  I wake up before it goes off and get to school early every day.

The administration I work for is so proactive in thinking about potential problems and providing solutions and/or things to think about to help us all.  Much of the technology we have now is due to their diligence.  We have mandatory requirements now for CPDUs and continuing education which include topics like cyber bullying, sexting, ...  In many districts, the teacher has to find presentations that meet the requirements and pay.  In my district, our administration tries to get those things covered in teacher institute days.  Having said all of this, the reason for this post is our main topic this year which is technology, cyber bullying, sexting ...

Our district brought in Megan Meier's mom to give her presentation on cyber bullying and discuss Megan's suicide.  It would break your heart to hear the presentation which included her 911 call.  A video of her husband describing how he tried to lift her body and get her down is also included.   To briefly tell you some background.  Megan was 13 years old and wanted to add a "cute guy" who has asked to be "friended" to her account.  She was allowed to do so and it seemed to be a good thing for a short time.  However, this guy turned on her and started calling her names, making fun of her for being "fat" and said horrible things about her.  In the end, Megan killed herself.  The FBI became involved when the mom read the messages in Megan's account.  We were shown the messages.  What human being could call a 13 year old those things and say all of the other things?  It turned out that "Josh Evans" did not exist.  In fact, Josh was really the mom of one of Megan's friends and they lived two doors down the street.  The mom was tried and convicted but the conviction was overturned.  That lady is walking the streets now knowing that she drove a 13 year old to suicide.

In these times, I believe that social media has become evil.  We were presented with so much to think about per technology.  It is amazing how kids now cheat on test using their smart watches.  How the have ways to get around the school's security system for internet use.  In the end, after hearing about all of the dangers of social media and technology, I believe what it really came down to is parenting.  I am convinced that you can't stop the evil potential of these things.  Instead, we have to make sure that we parent our kids.

Please forgive me for this rant.  I was so frustrated when this presentation ended.  In my heart, I just don't see any redeeming value to these accounts.  JMHO!

Coach B: You are a cyber bully, right on this board. Maybe this will make you change.
KIR: The people to blame are their parents, and many parents are having kids late, so many in a few generations are to blame.

That is laughable at best.  I have not "bullied" anyone on this board who hasn't dealt it out.

The wife and I went to a restaurant in an adjoining town that we often eat at.  By often, maybe 3 times a week now.  The wife keeps her horses at a farm in this community that is roughly 14 miles from our home.  Long ago we started eating at this small place and they serve exceptional food.  In fact, their chicken is pressure cooked and has won various awards.  The wife and I get the salad bar which costs us $7.50 and the produce is locally grown.  They also have a soup and tonight's soup was home made clam chowder.  As you might guess we are well known in the restaurant.  A few years ago, I had a student who was a great kid and needed a job so, in passing, I asked the owner if they would give that student a chance.  That was the start of a great relationship.  Last year, I had a great kid in class who's family was going through hard times.  I have probably asked this owner to hire five or six kids and they helped me out again and hired this young lady.  Last week, she celebrated her year anniversary there.  This young lady has become friends with my wife and they always strike up a conversation about recipes etc.  Tonight, when we went in, this young lady turned and ran into the back kitchen.  We knew something was up.

It didn't take us long to find out what was wrong.  In this Small Town USA similar to my town, the unthinkable happened.  My former student was waiting on a guy who had placed an order for over $50 in chicken and the fixings.  When she put the bagged meal on the counter, this guy asked for plastic ware to eat with.  As my former student turned around to get the plastic ware, this guy grabbed the sacks and ran for the door.  He ran out to a waiting car and they sped away.  The boss got mad at her but there was nothing she could really do about it.  After we were eating and this young lady finally came up to say hi, she told us she didn't want us to see her cry.  I'd like to get to meet this scum who did this.  This young lady is working on a Friday night when her classmates are at the football game.  She is the sole income for her family.  She works incredible hours to help her dad.  That scum could have gotten her fired if the boss wasn't such a good person.  In the end, we told her that we are glad that she didn't get hurt.  Had she tried to resist this guy, she could have been hurt.  Oh, and the thing is, there were a bunch of people standing around and none of them knew that this was happening until the guy made it out the door.  Here is hoping that this guy and his buddies choke on that chicken.

It can't be all "Left" all day and every day (too many on the Right roll out of bed attacking left-leaning politics and left-leaning individuals).  In any event, when it comes to a "sign of the times", we have to include anonymous adults attacking other anonymous adults on the internet as being high on the list, no?

Obama voted best job as President during our lifetime.

Not sure we must blanket all social media but when anonymous adults attack other anonymous adults on the internet, one has to wonder what chance our kids have.

Trump should be honest with the American people.

You can dish it out, but too much a fool to take it. Nobody ever feels sorry for a hypocritical blow hard. Take it to your momma and let her ease your pain. We quit going to the Ronald McDonald about 10 years ago. Maybe look me up in Irvine or Boulder. I'd welcome it.
